Contest: When Stars Were Red

A b s t r a c t:

Lydia Lunch, Bettie Page, Mata-Hari, Theda Bara…
..each one of these women was essentially a star of her time and has like any other inflated into a red sun – only to later implode into a little white dwarf of oblivion (
according to the mainstream anyway).

Tahutihotep and I want you to choose one and write what emotions or thoughts her story invokes in you after researching her story online. Possibly even what contributions you might think she may have made to society...

You’re on the net and only a click away...
..so we’re going to be nasty and not tell you any official sites.

But before you start whining... we want to promise you...they are a very idiomatic bunch...

one was a spy for the Germans and French in real life...
(you'll earn my favour if you can prove this wrong)

(as Tahu put her) one "was THE original goth girl"

another was once the sweet girl next door but...

and one literally went as far as to sew a cunt shut to prove a point.

But we're not saying which is which...

                                         .                           see the point?

S p e c i f i c s:

|| Polished work only.
|| Pre-writes are allowed by request.
|| Any form.
|| 3 entries max if you can handle it.
|| Controversial poems possible but no bashing or we will fuck you over.

O n e  G o l d e n  R u l e:

You must provide an online link of the research you did to show genuine intentions; as well as a briefing on who you chose and what inspired you to write what you did.

P r i z e s:

We've decided to double the prizes (yay!), now make 'em worth it.

1st : Gold & 600
2nd: Silver & 400
3rd: Bronze & 200

...and no you can't have my background...unless you get down on your knees and beg.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 22, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
We want to thank everyone who took the time to research these four wonderful women. It meant a lot to us. The entries were judged according to the Golden Rule bias (75% poem + 25% author notes)¡K congratulations to the winners!

1st Place Bettie Page ~ A Shy Girls Queen by EnchantingDeath
2nd Place Strength Eternal by DefinitiveFreak
3rd Place Lydia Lunch (The World's Reality Check) by Amunet Wolfbane

    T h e d a B a r a

Also known as the Arab Death (get it?) for her morbid associations with skeletons Theda was just totally out there. Definitely the original Goth Girl and vamp paving the way for the rest of those who would follow with heavy eyeliner and the pale makeup. Thanks to Tahutihotep I myself have fallen in love with this woman and felt like I have learned much about juxtaposed culture.

    you have a good point
Clara Bow would have been a good subject for this contest, as would Lillian Gish
but don't dispair, there will be other contests, so if you have a good idea for a Clara Bow poem, hold onto it.

I think Imokon wants only one per person, but I may be wrong. I would be okay with more, but Imokon has the final word, as this is her contest, on her site.

I'm curious... so I'm going to read about these women.

If I don't write a poem, at least I'll have acquired new knowledge.

Best of luck with this contest. It sounds great.

This is an intriguing contest. It's amazing how some of you guys/gals come up with these ideas. Now you've peaked my interest. I'm not good at writing on demand topics, my muse is ADD or psychotic, or schizophrenic or something not named yet
I'm going to bookmark this just in case.

Oh this is great...I saw the feature, just thought I would take a look and love this idea....I know about two of the women above, have read about and seen a bio on Bettie Page and know a little about Mata Hari, the other two I know who was goth, but not much on the other, but I am going to look them up, you have gotten my attention, I love women back in the 20's,30's,40's & old classic movies-Grapes of Wrath, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Crime & Punishment, The Great Gatsby, Pride & Prejudice and more.....I shall return with my pick, maybe two if I could come up with something....hope this gets you a lot of great entries, I think you have posted a great must for research on some cool women to be a contest write....thanks for posting.

I will try to write something intriguing enough to fit your very interesting contest. I'm not making any promises though. Life as a stay at home mother of three dogs and taking care of a ill father does seem to take up a lot more time than one would think. Great idea for a contest! Have fun with this one!
