Censorship

Censorship. What I am looking for are your views on censorship, put into poetic form. Are there cases where censorship should be allowed? Should it never be allowed? Are there limits to what should be censored? Where is censorship okay? When is it okay?
Due to recent events here on AP, this topic has been on my mind, and I thought it would be good to see what our poetic creativity could come up with.
Whatever. Just give me your views on freedom of expression. I am not looking for protest poems, as such, but simply looking for views on this topic. I do not like extra long poems, unless done in an exceedingly good manner. Rhyme, freestyle, or any other form is okay.

Prizes:
1st Place: Gold Trophy and 400 Points
2nd Place: Silver Trophy and 200 Points
3rd Place: Bronze trophy and 100 Points.

There may be some honorable mentions, depending on the quality of entries. If I deem any poems worthy, they will receive 25 Points each.

Rules:

None, really. It is considerate to read and comment on other entries, so please do so. It is not a requirement, although if it comes down to a coin toss between entries, I will choose the poet who did take the time to read and comment on other entries. That is my choice, so you take if from there.

This is a quick contest, ending on Friday, July 1st or after 25 entries, whichever comes first. I am lazy and going out of town for the weekend, so I will have the contest judged by Friday as well. Any questions, IM me and ask. Otherwise, get writing!

UPDATE Okay, I have extended the contest until Monday, July 4th. Seems more appropriate to end it on this day. Plus this will give a couple more days for other entries. Rest assured that when I get back in town Monday, I will have this contest judged by early Tuesday morning.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 5, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 400
  • Final notes:
Well, there were not a lot of entries but I was happy to see so many Quality entries. What also made me happy was the fact that all those who did enter are amongst the best poets on AP, at least in my humble opinion.

Here are the "winning" entries, which is somewhat misleading because in my view, all the entries are "winners." But these stood out in my mind, holding within a message for us all to heed.

I wish I could put my opinions into poems but that is harder. The way I look at it. Censorship is there for the light - hearted and young ones. It is needed at certain times. Just as pictures used for example. there is a thin line between artistic nudity and porn. So you have to be careful about which you judge it as. Good luck with the contest though.

Oooh, nice contest idea. Censorship...seems so connected to the freedom of speech. I don't like people telling me what I can and can not say, whether it be verbal or written. I'll see if I can write my opinion into poetic form. I am leaving on a trip to FL tomorrow morning, so I better get writing!

    Fun and sassy

I wrote this in the height of the "N" word war. It was in another contest, but I am not sure most people caught it. I think you may have seen it, and equally sure you will tell me if you think it unworthy of your contest. I will put something new together as well. Are you doing anything for the Edna contest? It may be a bust.Masterblaster is my only entry.

I started to enter this contest..... but I can't. To voice my views on the matter would be a violation of AP Policy..... since I'm opposed to censorship, any entry would be considered a "protest".

lol, sounds like a cop out to me! Entering is fine. Protest poems are only "banned" if put in the featured column, aren't they? On your own page or in contests does not violate AP policies, at least to my understanding.
    Do as you will!

Hhhmmmmmm then I wonder why they've removed "protest" poems that were not featured.

Nice idea, but will everyone be heard? What if they do not agree? It may be worth it to find out. I have what would be considered more of an essay. Is that acceptable?

Rous, they'll be heard by me, and it's my contest, so Yes, they will. And agree with what? I am simply looking for views on censorship, having no preconceived notions as to what others views should be.

Well...I am wondering if I should even attempt this as I am probably bound to be burned at the stake or some such other horrid end LOL And I don't know if I could honestly voice this in a poem...ah, but there is some time left still. We will see what I can (or cannot) do. In any event, very nice idea. It's just one of those sort of topics that to really think about just makes my heart (quite literally) ache. *sighs* Ho hum...we'll see....

Well...I guess I'm not so hopeless as I thought after all. My entry doth await thine eyes and honest judgement. (God help me )

(Have I already appaluded this? Just in case, here's an applause because this idea is certainly worth it.)
