Ontleding des menschelyken lichaams...
Amsterdam, 1690.
Copperplate engraving with etching. National Library of Medicine.
Govard Bidloo Gérard de Lairesse
(1649-1713) (1640-1711)
[anatomist] [artist]
I have always been fascinated by the cadavers that passed beneath my fingers during lab hours. The symmetry to be found in the human body is uncanny. Truely a fabrication by a most grand artist.
What I would like of you this time around, is to either fathom the image above, or any one of the images in this gallery; www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/dreamanatomy/da_gallery.html
...and describe psychological tendencies of humans vs their physical grace..
I repeat DESCRIBE PSYCHOLOGICAL TENDANCIES OF HUMANS VS THEIR PHYSICAL GRACE
..whether positive or negative...and not just the pictures themselves as I am not blind!
Ideas:
Medical school extremes (scandals).
A monster underneath soft skin.
A new life forming within a womb.
The connection between mind and body.
The Beauty of Human Anatomy in general.
Speak for a noose.
Speak for a plague and why you'd take lives.
Specifics:
No fantasy (of the dragons and fairies sort).
No erotica (the kind you masturbate to).
No ridiculous language or display.
I'm a whore for details and imagery.
One Golden Rule:
You must tell me what the last image in the gallery looks like in your author notes so I know you went there.
1st Place 300 pts & Gold
2nd Place 200 pts & Silver
3rd Place 100 pts & Bronze
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on July 17, 2005
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes:
This contest was extremely hard to judge, I was not away nor negligent… but it was really hard to judge… flipping coins and such… people removing entries making me re-judge… people editing… re-flip… but most importantly, you guys are just as keen as the next anatomist or philosopher. Amazing imagery and much depth in between your lines.
One thing that really burnt a fuse was the simple rule that I put up for this contest; I did not ask you to read or applaud any poems, vote, or do anything time consuming – rather, all I asked was you go to the gallery and mention what the last image looked like.
This is not a picture inspiration contest; it is a Dream Anatomy contest. The rule of thumb is to be inspired by the atmosphere there. I was lenient and let you go if you chose another image from within the gallery ( and no the first image was not an arm, it was of a vertebral column ).

What an intriguing contest...I'm very tempted to enter. I shall bookmark this and return soon. Dreams are always great poetic devices.
Cheers,

This is so creative nice to see something different from the cutting your head off type of competitions I really love the way you have presented this it is very graceful. Will see if a poem will be inspired worthy to be entered here. Stella

you have peeked my interest here, i have been a nurse for many years and am one to think the inside of the digestive tract is as beautiful as any exotic flower ever grown
off to the gallery.... -
oooh how exciting, i plan to enter your contest! This is a good idea for one! I like the image above, very weird.
-
Oh super cool. My kinda contest. Am loving this. The creativity sparks. and no one has done this before, ever.
I will enter or at least read the entries. Hopefully some damn good poetry will happen.
-
Yeah, while I'm doing chores I think of more 'Ideas' to add, hopefully we'll change the flow of stagnant poetry.
-
I have this bookmarked.
-
this looks both fun and interesting... and it also ends on my birthday. lol.
I must say I am jealous of you, I would love to study medicine myself but it doesn't seem practical with my current situation. I will definitely see if I can come up with something for this contest.

Oops sorry didn't know this was a contest.
-
Wow...The temptation to enter is strong...i'll come back, see the competition, then add if there is any chance at all for me to even stay in the first elimination round, haha. I'll be back with an entry, hopefully!

WoW! Now this is what I call a truly challenging and different contest. This one boggles the mind with possibilities. This is one of the more creative contests I have seen. I will have to think long and hard about this. I do like what you have chosen for subject matter. Very interesting indeed.
-
Looking forward. I myself am looking for new contests and am getting sick to my stomach.
-

I may be blind. But I can't see the gallary that you are talking about. Did you post a websight or something somewhere?
You dont literally mean we must physically go to the gallary do you? -
This is an extremely intelligent and creative contest!
Your own ideas for this are so unique and original.
I can't help but become curious about your other contests,
and how they turned out. -
I'm sorry the link was there when I was gold;

In response to your questioning my morbid and morose inspirations, I was a medical student at one point in time and have traveled to Lebanon, Egypt, and Saudia Arabia within the past five years (currently residing in Texas though).
I kind of can't help it...if you know what I mean. -
Although I don't generally write poetry based on drawings or photographs, I just might have to enter this one. I loved the artwork in the gallery and found quite a few of them to be inspirational, in and of themselves. Good luck with your contest, and hopefully I will have something entered before it closes (and lets just hope I don't forget!)
-
I't not neccessarily the image..it's the concept of outer beauty vs inner decay....or vica versa.
Looking forward for an entry. -
This is good, and a good way to make sure people see what you speak of. Looks to be an interesting contest.
-
I have been a nurse for 9 years, so I find your contest idea very intriguing. Hmm...I may just have to enter. I will see what strikes me. Peace, Syah
-
Now that is an interesting contest concept. Hmmmmm.... so is the notion of being fascinated by cadavers. And I thought I was OUT THERE.... lol
-
I guess you'd have to be med student to understand....or a necrophiliac....snicker
Seriously now, you going to enter or not? Please? The points will get offended... -
this is not only a kick ass ideas for adults but for me its kinda good cause the irony is this: im a registered nurse lol i will definately enter this contest sug

just thought I'd mention that instaed of describing the picture I just included the link. a. I didn't want to describe it strangely, and b. everyone could see it that way. unless it's okay to upload it?
anyway, if that's not okay please let me know.
-
about uploading the picture, there are no copyrights, since they're very ancient. but if you yourself don't want to that's fine too, as this contest is focused on a concept and not actual 'describe the picture' thingies.
-
Congratulations to the winners,
and thank you for the 3rd place
-
Congratulations to the winners.. sigh I'm so oblivious at times .. I just realised this had been judged.. !! Thank you very much for the trophy, but more for the fantstic idea of this which tested both my memory and my ability..
