Well, this should be an interesting contest...I'll have to bookmark this and try it out! Though the rhyming might get me
Good luck with this!
Bestest wishes & other mushy, gushy stuff

I have a poem I think you'd enjoy, but I don't do rhyming poetry. I think it's rather narrow to confine your poetry (and a contest) as such, but it is your contest. Good luck. Poetry does not have to rhyme to be good- in fact, many journals publishing professional poets advise against it. If you're interested, check out my piece on tribal dance, Swirling Ivory.

I hate having to rhyme but maybe i'll give it a try what are the points for anyway? I just became a member here. Good luck to all!

HAhaha... Alicia, you said no limit... so I entered 3 times, lol! all prewrites too! Thanks for this awesome contest!! Yeah yeah!

Oooohhhh, Center Stage! Oooohhhh Charmed! Oooohhhh dance! They are the three topics that I could possibly write about, hehe! I think that this is the contest for me!
I can't enter right this moment, I have to go to work, ye see. But I will try my best to write something while I'm at work, so I can enter in a few hours time. Wooohoo, I so excited!
It's a chance to stretch my rhyming muscles, hehe.

Heh I never agree with these contests... they discourage winning on the merits of your actual poetry. When is it ever fair that somebody with an inferior poem should win just because they have more points to give? We shake our heads when people buy their way into certain positions or pay to win certain awards, but here, your rule is just the same old corruption, on an even more blatant scale:
"I will be grading on a point system-every donation of 5 points will be awarded with 3 points added to your score."
No doubt you'll dismiss this suggestion, but think about reconsidering and hosting a fair contest where everybody gains points based on their actual poetry (isn't that what this site is for?) rather than how 'rich' they are. Take any points which people have already donated and give them right back. Stop promoting such superficiality on this site and start encouraging plain out good poetry.

Excuse me, but this is at least my 5th contest, and if you wish, take a look at some of them and you will see that despite some people gaining muchos puntos for donating the best poems I believe still win. I'll let you in on a little secret. If someone writes a poem worth of a score 30/100, yet they will gain 6 points on their score for donating 10, you know what i do? I take what I think their score should be (30/100) and I drop it down to a 27 and then add 6 points. If two poems have similar scores, but one is truly good and didn't donate points, and the other sucked and donated 50, I would still give the gold trophy to the better sounding poem. I'm not stupid you know. I've been doing this for a long time. It has worked in the past and my friend lilpbnjam has looked at my past contests and even though she also disagrees with the donations she always agrees on the ones that I picked for trophies. I don't do donations to gain points for myself. I use every single point that I gain and have for 2nd and 3rd place prizes. i hate people that hold contests and 2nd and 3rd winners get nothing but a trophy. I believe that these "contestants" are trying their hardest and that they should also get something out of it. Now, if you still have a problem, you can talk to me about it, but I have good judgement. -Alicia
P.S. Also what I've realized is that the people who donate the most points are the ones whose poems suck the most, and with the added points, they still receive the lowest scores. I make sure of that. -
Right. Read what you've just said and go read what you've put in the contest description... you're giving people the impression that if they donate enough points, they'll win (provided their poem is at least mediocre.) I'm all for asking for point donations to help with second and third places, but I still disagree with the way you're going about it. Lots of people simply request a donation or applause with each entry to keep the contest going and it doesn't give people the illusion that they'll do any better.
Somehow I have a feeling you'll never agree but at least consider doing things the straight-up honest way. -
Yes... In the beginning, when I first read this contest, I also sent an IM to Alicia explaining what I thought. And she told me to check her other contests. And it's true, the ones who sucked, and somehow had a hig score donated a ton of points. Sure I donated points, but not to win, I donated them because I know what a contest can take outta ya. And I gave them to her so she could put up a decent 2nd and 3rd prize points. I would have easily donated more if she needed it.
So, Just check out her other contests and you can see what both of us are talking about.
Oh yeah... Shiggity Shiggity Shwah!! slol (so lol) -
Thanks for notifying me about my score being 75. I had forgotten all about this contest....nor do I think that I gave any points towards it. I am a little confused by it to be completely honest ...there were no final closing notes here , so I am still lost as to what a score of 75 means...but that's okay
I am sure this is a judging system that I have not entered previously , but I am sure that all is done fair and square

I see that this contest is over, but, let me see if I understand this...if you say that the best entries still get picked as winners, and with the formula you have set up for judging, then donating points effects the outcome in no way whatsoever? And the points that are donated actually go into the prize pool?
If this is the case, what you are doing is known as "bait and switch". No matter how you slice it, that seems kind of shady. The fact that you have done it in your previous contests makes it seem more shady rather than less. There is something inherently unprincipled about saying that donated points will "buy" someone something that it doesn't buy.
To spell it out a bit more clearly, here is what you said in your contest descrption:
"3. I will be grading on a point system-every donation of 5 points will be awarded with 3 points added to your score."
Here is what you said in your reply to a comment:
"If someone writes a poem worth of a score 30/100, yet they will gain 6 points on their score for donating 10, you know what i do? I take what I think their score should be (30/100) and I drop it down to a 27 and then add 6 points."
Doing the math, in dropping the score of the poem, the contestant actually spends 10 points for a net gain of three points on their overall score, and not the six points that your contest advertises. I commend you on your creative acconting...
They are of course your contests and you are free to host them however you see fit, but just to provide a little perspective, people who do this sort of thing out in the real world usually find themselves sued for fraud.
Just an observation. -
Wait a minute...
You gave the gold to someone who donated points , And is one of your good friends , And entered as a contestant...
. lilpbnjam is your friend and donated a good
amount of points , Therefore , This contest was rigged to begin with. And even if this isn't the case , Seems awfully cheeky
to me.
I resent such a contest ran directly in connection with their friends. I also resent anyone who doesn't take the art of poetry as what is is , Poetry. I could care less about all these other problems people are speaking of. the fact remains that someone you know well donated points and you supplied them with a gold! Define fair or logic in that one.
The worship of friends doesn't make poets , It makes the truth a twisted ball of yarn. You should think about these things before you run contests. If you want to put your friends on pedestals , Find somewhere else to do so.

And even though this contest is point donation oriented , It still does not change the fact that the person that won the gold came to the rescue and had so much to say...Seems a little odd to me.

.........
-
I don't get it, it's a point-oriented contest, so why the hell are people bitching???
-
Thank you so much for that!!! I tried to run an honest contest. why can't people leave me alone? Thanks for your support.
