Quotes and Imagery and Backgrounds, Oh My!

This contest has two parts.
First: Dazzle me with imagery
Second: Create a background that fits your poem

Part One:
First, a dozen quotes to get you thinking- You must choose one of them, but I don't want to see it in your poem.  I want you to use it as inspiration and you can use only half of the quote at most in your actual poem.  You must write the entire quote as your "two lines"

"How in the light of one night have we come so far?" - Lea Salonga, Miss Saigon

"Twenty-thousand seconds since you left and I'm still counting." - K's Choice, 20,000 Seconds

"I've relied on my illusions to keep my warm at night." - Sarah McLachlan, Dirty Little Secret

"If you think I'm such a whore, what'd you fuck me for?" - Marry Me Jane, I'm That Bad

"Everyone's little bit racist; it's true. But everyone is just about as racist as you." - Avenue Q

"I don't get many things right the first time.  In fact, I am told that a lot." - Ben Folds, The Luckiest

"Hunger hurts, and I wanna eat so bad oh it kills, cause I know I'm a mess he don't wanna clean up." - Fiona Apple, Paper Bag

"Don't wish.  Don't start.  Wishing only wounds the heart." Idina Menzel, Wicked

"The way you're bathed in light reminds me of that night God laid me down into your rose garden of trust." Live, The Dolphin's Cry

"Cast your eyes on the ocean.  Cast your soul to the sea.  When the dark night seems endless, please remember me." Loreena McKennitt, Dante's Prayer

"Til the world explodes.  Til there's no one left who has ever known us apart." The Last Five Years

"While the muted sounds are pumping rhythm all the walls close in on me." Peter Gabriel, Growing Up

Part Two-
Imagery Imagery Imagery
Paint the picture for me.  Take me where this process takes you.

Part Three-
Now- I want to see what background you can come up with to fit your creation.  You CAN use one that has already been created, but I'd rather you create your own background.  I often find that my creations don't really sing until they have their own backgrounds.  If you're not a silver or gold member, I think you're stuck with what's out there, but I'm not sure.

RULES:
If you're still here after all that, it's a great sign.
1. You must use the quote for inspiration, not use it in it's entirity, and write the full quote where AP asks for your two lines.
2. Curse all you like.  For some of the quotes it's very fitting.
3. Don't use sticky caps- this is not a contest for children, although a poet of any age may enter.
4. Comment on something of mine.  The poems with backgrounds created for them are preferred.
They are Swirling Ivory allpoetry.com/Poem/1291932
        Innocence allpoetry.com/Poem/1259735
        My Rules allpoetry.com/Poem/1205347
        Your Woman allpoetry.com/Poem/1150777
5. I am VERY partial to non-rhyming poetry unless your rhymes are fluid
6. Comment on as many poems in the contest as you can.
7. Have fun with this.
8. Let me know if you created the background and how.

I look forward to reading some truly wonderful entries.  I WILL read and comment on every poem.

Prizes are 300 for first
          150 for second
           75 for third.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 7, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Not everyone followed all of the rules, but what can you do? And before any of you IM or comment that you couldn't create your own backgrounds, that's not the rule I'm referring to. I did promise that I'd comment on other poems of yours, and I will, I just haven't had a chance to do it just yet. I was disappointed that I didn't get as many entries as with my first contest, but what can you do?

The winners are very different from each other. If you won- or even if you didn't- please read and comment of those in the contest. I'm hoping to see more from all of you in the future. Thanks again for helping me make this contest a success.

I would enter but I cannot use a background I have created on here becuase I do not have a membership. I am stuck with the poopy ones that hold no meaning for me. Other wise I'd be all over this like flies on poop. Sorry that's all I could think of.

Woo! Fiona Apple! ^.^ "Paper Bag" is one of my faves. Interesting contest here...not your run-of-the-mill dark, angst, sad deals.

I recognise none of the quotes and indeed the only reference in the quotes I recognise is to that dreadful musical Miss Saigon whose memory I have mercifully obliterated from my mind. So this is obviously not the competition for me! I clicked on it in the "featured" box not knowing it was a contest......................................

This sounds like a great contest you've got going here... hopefully lot's of people will be inspired by the qoutes and will write a poem for this contest. I wish everyone who enters the best of luck with their poems and I hope that despite whether or not you win or lose you will enjoy writing the poetry for this contest just for the enjoyment of writing poetry and not just because you have the opportuninity to win 300 points and the chance to have a lot of people read your poetry and think it's great. Remember... take your time and have fun with it!

I don't think you need to know any of the quotes to enter. I specifically chose quotes that I didn't think many people would know.
