Poems of up to 40 lines, about either ships or cats (or both).
I prefer rhyme, or at least structured poetry, but the rhyme should be light, deft, natural and in a sense inevitable, not heavy-handed or forcing unnatural word-orders.
If free verse, it has to be very good!
I reserve the right to award no prize.
The poetry I have posted will give you some idea of my tastes in general style and texture.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on May 20, 2005
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: This was a very difficult contest to judge, with a big field of 37 entries, mostly about cats, and nearly all of high standard. I was surprised, indeed, by how high the standard was. Thank you all for participating.

It obviously gets a better chance at the prize. You might do one on "Simon" or "Mrs Chippy" - and I trust you know who they were!
-
Congratulations, one & all!!! Some amazing entries here...well done, Poets!!!

I'm afraid my silly limerick about a tiger may have brought down the average of amazing entries... but I entered in hopes you might get a chuckle. I think this was an interesting concept for a contest- never thought of combining cats and ships. I'm glad you got a lot of great entries! Congratulaltions to the trophy winners!

I would not say it brought the standard down but a longer poem IF ITS QUALITY IS SUSTAINED will have a better contest chance. Thank you for entering. What I wanted was to enourage those poets who want to write about something other than their own neuroses. I think the number and quality of entries showed these poets are substantial.

Thank you for choosing my poem to win the gold in your contest! I am honored to have my poem selected from so many wonderful entries! Congratulations to all!

Thank you for your message. There were a lot of entries and the standard was high, so I think winning this was, if you trust my judgement, something substantial.
