Ok, here comes another contest from me. I stopped counting after three.
Anyway, this is a different sort of contest. This is one to make your brain work free of your normal ways. What do I mean? I mean I want you to let your brain take over in this piece. I want no structure, no organization, nothing.
Still confused? Ok, have you seen the movie "The Sixth Sense?" In one part of that movie, the kid tells us that if you write, and keep on writing, eventually things come out that you didn't even know you were thinking about.
This is easier than you think. Here's what I want you to do:
1. Open up a page to write.
2. Clear your mind of any plot bunnies, ideas, or muse nippings.
3. Write the first thing that comes to mind.
4. Keep writing. Don't stop. For anything. Mistype a word, forget about it, just keep writing. Don't edit. Don't think about what you are going to say. Just let your mind take over and let it speak through your fingers.
5. Keep going for as long as you want. Write for five minutes or five hours, but keep writing until nothing else comes out.
6. Try not to allow fiction to come in. I don't want any structure or ideas, remember, just what is in your brain.
Once have you have done that, read it. DO NOT EDIT THE PIECE! Save it, then read it. Don't worry about skipped words or spelling/grammar errors. In your author comments, tell me what you learned about yourself, any realizations you came to, anything you wrote that you didn't even know you were thinking.
The Rules:
1. No WrItInG lIkE tHiS, it means you thought about it and didn't let your brain loose.
2. Feel free to use cutting, suicide, depression, erotica, whatever you want. Foul language is ok, too. If that is what your brain is pushing out, go for it.
3. Be sure to put the author comments that I requested.
4. Obviously, no prewrites.
5. I am not requiring you to read any of my work or anyone else's. I hate that. So don't feel obligated. You are more than welcome to do so if you wish, or to get a better understanding, but you don't have to.
6. This can be in poem or story form. Just hit "enter this contest" and write however you feel like writing.
7. You can enter more than once if you wish, but only once per day!
I know you are wondering what the point of doing this is, and why doing it correctly is so important. Well, there are a few reasons. 1. it could help with writer's block. 2. it's a wonderful way to get to know yourself and be honest with yourself 3. it's neat to see what happens!
If you need further clarification on what exactly I am asking for, feel free to IM me or mail me. Also, I have done one of these, so feel free to read that. I started on a general idea, then let my brain run wild: allpoetry.com/Column/1199372
Please note, if the piece is structured in any way and does not allow the brain to flow (pretty much, if it doesn't follow the rules), you will be removed from the contest. Feel free to try again if you are removed. I will tell you why I removed you, and you may feel free to nicely appeal the decision.
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on May 13, 2005
- Rewards: Gold: 350
- Final notes: Holy cow! Ok, first of all, I want to say sorry for this taking so long to get judged. I've just gotten off of a ten day straight work stint, so there wasn't much in the line of free time. I had planned to spend the weekend going through all these entries because I got way more than I had expected, but I couldn't stop reading! There was a lot of deep thoughts, some silly ones, but everyone did what I asked. And it appears a lot of you got something out of this, which was the plan. Some got to fight themselves by not editing. Some learned about things in their minds they didn't know were there.
I am glad to see so many people made possitive comments about this experience. Whether you found it easy or hard, it appears a lot of you enjoyed this idea. I hope you keep up with writing this way, even if you don't make it public. It's a wonderful, and safe, way of losing some stress and owning up to your own feelings.
Overall, this contest was a lot harder to judge than I had imagined it would be. LOL! But those were some of the best reads I've had in a while. Nice job, and keep up the amazing work, everyone!

wow... This is an awesome idea auntie erin!!! I really liked your lil "free flow" thing.. I may have to try this.. LOL... Good luck on getting some good entries!!! but I have a question... how are you gonna judge this?? LOL... j/w!!!
Hugs,
Beth -
It is going to be tough, but I'm figuring judging will go by who seems to have gone for the idea the best. It's not an easy thing to do to not edit and to just let your feelings flow. So I'll judge based on who appears to have done it best and what they got out of the experience.

I don't know if I want to know what I'm thinking. LOL This should be fun, though. I may just try it. Hugs, Patricia

This sounds interesting....very kewl idea for a contest! I do it tonite and then I'll put it in the contest? sounds good?
-
Very ineresting idea. I think I do this sorta thing all the time. I'm always writing notes down to use at a later date. Things that have nothing to do with anything I maybe thinking at the time. Just ramblings basically. Technically that's what you're after rambling of the mind. That would be a good title for it too! You may see me entering this. You probably hope so.
Peace for now.

What a great idea! But don't you get impatient reading and reading and reading the same peice? Oh well, off I go to enter.
-
Wow! Awesome idea... I'm definately entering! Props for coming up with this completely original idea. Nice job!
-
I second all of the above. This is such a sly and smart contest idea. *pfft* ~Making people be honest with their writing~ Now who would've thought of that? Genius idea. I've entered and many thanks to you for the outcome I got. I guess I needed it and didn't even know it. Good luck judging.

Thanks for coming up with this idea, it is beautiful. It has helped me with personal writing so that it becomes as relaxing as driving and singing...well...for me. But anyway...good luck with the judging.

I'm working on it, I promise. Just not able to read many a night, not a lot of free time for the next week or so. But I am working on it.
