Hello all!
This is my first contest, and I didn't want it to be a copycat of some of the other great ones that are already going on.
Most of my poetry is free form, not following any technical form, but I've recently tried writing limericks, haikus/senryus, and sonnets. I'm just learning about the format, so I thought why not have a contest so I can (selfishly) learn more about their forms.
So here goes. The only poems that will be accepted in this contest are Limericks, Haikus/Senryus, or Sonnets. Of course they can be about any subject, and I'm not offended by erotica or cursing. Just please do not use sticky caps. Other than that, I just have a few simple rules...
1. Please critique at least one of my limericks, haikus/senryus, or sonnets. I don't have very many, but as I say I'm learning. You don't need to tell me which one you've critiqued as I will check my writings. So far, the pieces you can critique are
Sunsets, Como Me Llamo (with translation!), The Tale of the Telecommuter, and Wolves.
If I add any to these works, I'll post the title here. In these critiques, please let me know if I've followed the rules of the form and how I might improve.
2. In the author box of your poem, please write EITHER what you like about the poetic form you've chosen or a specific rule that guides the form you've chosen. For those of you who choose to write a sonnet, please tell me if it's a certain type of sonnet (i.e. Elizabethan, Shakespearean, etc.) and what makes it different from another type of sonnet.
Well, I guess that's about it! I'm limited on points. So, first place will receive the 300 points, second place will receive 150 points, and third place will receive 75 points!
I will also be awarding those pieces I feel deserve an honorable mention with applause!
If anyone wants to donate points for this contest, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, if I can earn some more points in my critiquing, I'll add points to the contest.
Good luck! And, know that I will be reading every poem entered and adding my comments!

Have you ever tried writing cinquains? If you like haikus you would probably like those too. They're five lines long, and the syllables are 2,4,6,8,2. I just started writing them recently, and I love them
-
I'll come take a look at some of your writings! Thanks for the suggestion!
-
I just have to enter with one of my Haiku here
I so love to write them
(though I think I'm not extremely good at them, but yeah)
wonderful idea for a contest!
Good luck judging

Heehee. ^^ I have a sonnet that I'm working on at home.
I was working on it for quite some time. -Wags tail and bounces- Heeheehee. ^^ So, this should be enjoyable! -Snickers- o.< Gods, sonnets are hard to write, did you know that!? -Laughs and howls- Best of luck to everyone in the contest!

Thank you all for the information on Senryus! I have edited this contest to allow for the submission of senryus, seeing their similarity and the fact that they've already been entered!
-
36 entries!!??!! Wow! I'm going to have my hands full judging this! Thank you for so many wonderful entries. What great inspiration for my next poems!
-
Okay, I'll read the next 18 tomorrow. I'm tired.
-
Thanks for all you comments and catching a spelling mistake of mine ("POetic Culture Shock" has since been editted). In answeing your question about punctuation in haiku/senryus: I honestly don't know. Please feel free to read any/all poetry posted on thsi site by k-dense (myself).-Curtis Meyer

Well, there's a total of 51 entries here. I never dreamed I would have so many entrants! Well, at least I'll be getting more points to spend on this contest! I may have to revise my point giving. I'll let you know after I've read and critiqued all of the pieces. Thanks again!
-
Ok, I have 15 more to read before I make my decision, but I'm too tired to finish reading tonite.I will most likely make my decision tomorrow!
-
WOW, when I entered my pathetic writes (I just don't do form poetry very well) you didn't have that many entries... but look at the list now! Well, I hope you learned a lot about these forms, and you obviously had some very talented poets who entered this- so I'm sure judging was difficult! Despite having many entries, you read them and commented- and that's commendable! Thank you very much! Congratulations to the winners!
-
Thank you! I enjoy reading poetry and commenting. Just didn't think I'd readily have so many to read! At least I was able to rack up enough points to award! I had zero points at the beginning of this contest! LOL
-
Oy I hear ya on the points! My current (and nearly finally closed) contest has cost me 1400 pts total. I need to start going through contests and writing fresh stuff so I can rack up points... I'm a little burnt out on critiquing at the moment because I have over 60 entries... ah well, it was worth it!
-
What a lovely contest this has been… I’m chuffed that my poem’s been chosen for “honourable mention” Thanx a lot…

I'm only sorry I didn't have more points to give out!
