Give us a creative write about the Antebellum era...Antebellum means 'before war'
Refers to elegant plantation homes built in the American South 30 years preceding the Civil War...
Tell us stories surrounding these lovely homes, who lived in them, descriptive surrounding grounds, or haunting shadows that might reside there.
For instance, Oak Alley Plantation shown here is not only known for its beautiful setting, but also for mysterious disturbances that visitors and staff have witnessed over the years.

Wonderful concept
Oh this is a wonderful concept! Just looking at the magnificent oak trees my mind started working already. I hope the "mind-workings" will result in something poetic and imaginative. Since I am not very familiar with American history, culture, etc. (being South African), I would have to do some research, but that makes it so much more interesting.
Good luck to the two of you - hope you get high quality entries. Now let me go read a bit....

Thi is a wonderful contest, I am the only entrant so far and am leaving for a few days, so couldn't read two others. Thanks for inviting me to enter.
-
I don't know anything about the history of this time (I'm a Brit) but I do have quite a vivid imagination. I will probably give it a go but I hope it's not judged too much on historical accuracy!
-
Great contest Susan. It's always nice to see a contest outside of the norm that may ask the entries to go a bit outside of the box for their inspiration.
-
this sounds like it is going to be a wonderful contest and that is for sure. I am going to look forward to read the poem that you hve enter this one and that for sure. I thank you so very much for coming up with this contest. it is really going to be good.
-
Don't worry..historical accuracy is not important here.

Okay, Susan, I'm going to try to enter this. It looks like a most interesting subject of which to write. I've read the other two entries and both are very good...I hope I can do as well.

I'll keep tryin', though...I'll be off & on a lot today...see all y'all later!!!

Grand Idea
Beautiful picture. One of these days I'm going to take a southern tour of the estates.Adore these fantastic old homes.Just the fact that they still stand,is a tribute to the workers and craftsman that built them.~~~Suseann -

www.weeghosties.com is a websight I never heard of until getting your message. While I don't care about winning trophies and I already have about 13,000 points, my problem is twofold: 1) I don't appreciate being told that I copied and pasted ANYTHING into competition. That is theft, I have my works used that way and I WOULD NOT do that. I was under the impression you wanted a poetic form about an Antebellum homstead and I wrote one abou Ivy Green in Alabama, but since there were no hauntings there, decided to go with Oak Alley since my husband is from there and he knew about it. Here are the websites I used to gather information :
architecture.about.com/library/bloakalley.htm
www.rlrouse.com/oak-valley-plantation.html
www.cr.nps.gov/nr/travel/louisiana/oak.htm
etherscribe.tripod.com/oak_alley_plantation.htm
2)and probobly most importanly is this...If you thought that and did not want to consider my entry FINE! But to leave a message for others to see and start to question my truthfulness or honesty is beyond inconsiderate. It shows no social graces whatsoever and you will never have to worry about me taking part in another of your contests.
AND...just to set the record straight, I went to the website you mentioned and while details are details and are probably the same wherever you look you outright LIED when you said my last line was the same as theirs. I did not see anything on any page about "Don't be overwrought". Thank you for your feeble attempt to embarass me but all you've really done is piss me off.

Thanks for this contest Susan and Maureen. I did really enjoy the challenge of this. It's not often a contest can prompt us to go out of our normal topics and really want to give our best to it. Something such as this in its depth did just that.
I do think you did a wonderful job in hosting this, and I'm so glad you got the participation that you did. Being able to appreciate the other entries was something to look forward to.
thanks again!
Kimmie
