Chirping birds and blooming flowers not your forte?
Thank god there are more of us.
It is my personal belief that Eliot and Millay had it right.
Read and be inspired:
(A section of 'Burial of the Dead' from 'Wasteland')
April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Spring
To what purpose, April, do you return again?
Beauty is no longer enough,
You can no longer quiet me with the redness
Of little leaves opening, stickily.
I know what I know.
The sun is hot on my neck so I observe
The spikes of the crocus.
The smell of the earth is good.
It is apparent that there is no death.
But what does that signify?
Not only underground are the brains of men
Eaten by maggots,
Life in itself
Is nothing,
An Empty cup, A flight of uncarpeted stairs,
It is not enough that yearly, down this hill,
April,
Comes like an Idiot, Babbling and strewing flowers
-Edna St. Vincent Millay
Sooo, all you April haters (or maybe just spring in general) this is your place to let it all out.
damn april.
damn spring.
now WRITE!
Rules.
1. If you use sticky caps I will personally eliminate you. I'm watching you. I have read one poem on this site where the sticky caps have been ok with me. You are not the the majority, do not risk it.
2. If you write a "pro-spring" poem you will mot have a chance. And you will piss me off.
3. Don't write about god. Just don't. Any other religion is ok, though. as long as it can relate back to spring.
Oh, and I'm not going to say NO rhyming, but if you want to win don't even try.
Also, you don't have to comment on my poems.
feel free, but it's not required. I hate that.
good luck!

Awesome. I'm not a big fan of spring either. I think auumn is my favorite....
-
Very different considering I'm seeing a whole lot of Spring loving contests here. I don't care about March, April, or May (and the beginning parts of June) either. Very original idea. I'll see if I can come up with something.

I'm a skier... I am in denial.
SPRING IS NOT COMING -

If hell froze over I would come cheer you on as you flew down a slope and ramped satan

You cite examples by two great rhyming poets and then disallow rhyme? That's somewhat annoying as I just wrote something I thought would work well here. Oh well.
Nice topic otherwise. -
Ok, if you write rhyming poetry like most people on this SITE then dont' rhyme. I did not disallow rhyme - it's just that when i write "free verse prefered" I still got alot of really badly written rhyming poems by 14 year olds. I stated my prefrence - I have not read a rhyming poem that i have enjoyed on this site. I was giving you a fair warning.
by the way - the great eliot only rhymed occasionally- and randomly at that. -
Darling, I am so thrilled by this contest. I was thinking of entering "a bouquet" into it. I dunno. I'll have to read over it. I may write something completely original for YOU and your contest. Hooray! lol You should be excited. [do your happy dance] I just realized you're online so I'm going to IM you on this beastly website.
You are definitely going to get some form of an entry from me; I'm just not sure what yet.
Love you,
Bree is making her mess like nobody's business -
hey this is very cool in my eyes.
I always seem to get weird reactions from people because I hate spring and summer.
but I do and now I have the chance to write about it so that is entirely cool.
ok, I think I'll go see what I can come up with..
great idea.
-
hey I thought I'd give you a heads up lol.
that guy you were talking to about rhyming is a very good poet
you would probably like whatever he has to enter.
-
oh and those poetry selections were great.
also, I hope I can write another poem for this later if it is okay.
I think I could do better than the one I entered. -
spring has sprung
the grass has rizz
i wunder where
the birdies izz?
i take it that will not be good enough to walk away with a gold ~ but i could not resist
autumn is my time
i may write an anti spring cleaning poem ~ would that suffice? nope! lol!
great idea for a contest tho
elaine
-
that's fine!
good luck!
