"Kindred Souls" Group Contest

This contest is open to members of the group "Kindred Souls" only, with the exception of MuseStalker, who will be sitting this one out to help award points and "featured" listings to winners. Hugh Wyles will be the sole judge of this contest, (and the group is very grateful for his generous donation of time and effort to this endeavor.)

Theme Choices:

1 - What does "Kindred Souls" mean to you; or

2 - What inspires you – what moves you and sends those sparks soaring; or

3 - Tell us about specific imagery, metaphor, or simile in poetry that has moved you; include it in your own poem and give tribute to its author (see below for an example excerpt from a poem fragment of mine)

EXAMPLE:

‘I have watched
"a ceremony of sparrows and bare branches"
with Zolynas,
and I have felt
that pain "so utter – It swallows substance up"
of which Dickinson wrote.

I have stood, in awe,
"listening to Ray Charles blues shout blind"
along with Ginsberg,
and I have felt
"lonely as a leftover thumb"
just as Koertge described.’

Rules:

1.  Only "Kindred" members will be allowed to enter, unless the group decides to open the competition up to others later. If this occurs, this rule will be amended.
2.  Standard grammar and spelling requirements and preclusion of sticky caps, chat-speak, and other such (ahem) crap.
3.  No limit as to style, number of entries, or form. 4.  Pre-writes will be allowed, but for every prewritten piece, please submit a new piece as well.

Trophy and point distribution:

Gold 600 points;

Silver
 400 points;

Bronze = 200 points

Additional points, Honorable Mentions, and featured clicks will be determined by Hugh Wyles decision and remaining available points.

Good luck....and great poetry!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 10, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 600
  • Final notes:
The following was Hugh's message regarding the judging of this contest:

This has not been easy to judge because the standard of all poems was high and none could be laid aside as usually happens in contests I have judged.
For what it's worth, my judgements are as follows:
First (GOLD) "The Sense of Kin" by DeeCrepit.
This poem has a fine message, well worded, metrically sound and nicely rhymed.
Most of all it is adventurously innovative in its tetrameter iambics and in its line
breaks which I think the poet has contrived successfully. It is first class poetry.
Second (Silver) "Addressed by Love" by Myrataal.
This also has a romantic and imaginative message and is pure poetry in the best sense. The iambic metre is well crafted and the final eight lines make a telling conclusion to a splendid piece of writing.
Third (Bronze) "Thoughts not yet inked" by Artis.
Of several free-verse entries by this poet, all carrying good messages, I liked this one best because the line-breaks (which are important in free-verse writing) seemed more appropriate. Free-verse is so often simply prose broken into lines of convenient length without good reason for the breaks other than to give a "poem appearance".
Honourable Mention "Kindred Souls" by Maureen.
"The kindling from our kindred souls" by Artis.
Both of these poems convey the purpose of the Group as the poets see it.
I especially liked Maureen's forthright, simple utterance and had difficulty deciding between her and Artis for third place.
Other entrants should not, in any way, feel that their efforts were not worthy.
As I already stated, the standard of all entries was extremely high and Artis' support of the contest is little short of amazing.
You have some very fine poets among your members and it is an honour for me to have been invited to judge their work.
    Thankyou, all, for the opportunity.
    Love and best wishes,
    Hugh Wyles.

Congrats to all who entered. You're all winners in my book!

let the kindred souls all gather and sing songs of what it means, paged for others to find refuge, in this host of poet's dreams...Artis

Dear Hugh, Thank you for the honorable mention. I didn't expect to win..my simple rhymes are no match for the skill shown by the winners you've chosen.

Thank you, my friend, for being so kind and so generous with your time. I really appreciate your honesty and diplomacy! I knew I could count on you!

    Love and Hugs,
    ♥ Maureen

    Dear Muse Stalker,
    Thankyou for the complimentary points.
I do not accept 'payment' for judging but accept these in the spirit given and will apply them to a good AP cause.
It was a pleasure to read and judge all entries.
    Love XXX Hugh.
