Jump in and slay your croccodiles!

Hmm...where to start?

Many brilliant poets were offended in the first edition of this column.
If it means anything, i didn't desire to point the finger at anyone, I was absent in explanation. let me try this again.

Poetry is the voice of the soul, it's like therapy, it's you thoughts expressed in words, each piece is a unique work of art. The talent you poets wield is sharper than any human sword.WRITE ON!!!

It sickens me to look around and see many poets stapled to audience approval's, their brick wall boxes that bind imagination, stuck like glue to their comfort zones. I see it when i look at my own works, and when I click on a random write.

 Don't smother your talent!
light-hearted poets, dare to visit the dark side!
dedicated dark writers, dare to peek at the sun !
Go beyond.
Write.
if someone thinks it's crap:
A) let me know, I'll applaud it with an honest reply

B ) so what, keep writing, it's YOUR poetry!

C) break your box! strengthen the poet within, broaden your comfort zone.

In other words, perform your music. If they throw tomatoes- eat them!

Take something that seems "simple" and give it your depth.
or take something well- layered and tare off the layers like bed sheets!
Go throw poetry around like a ball, (EXPERIMENT!) it just might smack you in the face with its treasures.

(let me know what you think, honest opinion, and if you actually try this out, let me know)

~best wishes all poets~
~keep writing,~

YES! It's posted cool ! I can't wait to see what comes through! I really hope that everyone tries something new just to see what they are capable of, I think some may be pleasently surprised!

hhmm... You want us to be creative and write the opposite to what we know. Then you stifle (censor) with the 1st 2nd and 4th of the "not allowed"

The link to 3 of our best works bit is a little silly. 1. Nobody (except the vain and/or arrogant) would pick and choose between their own works. Each is different and each is as good and/or as bad as the previous or the next.
    2. You are assuming everybody who enters this contest has 3 poems posted. Those that don't can't enter. Another restriction.

Why should we be forced to read one of your poems and one of your friends poems. This contest is about writing poetry and you have us comment on your poems. Why? I know it's your contest and can do what you want, but, why?

Read your contest speil again then read my comments. You have a contest promoting creativity but only if we conform to your requests and rules. hhmmmm

if i have to cmment on all the entries, ( which i'd like to) i expect something in return!

    you're not the judge,
and you don't have to enter,
and you might just be arrogant

    best wishes!
    keep writing!

I think this contest is a great idea!! You're right. Most artists do get trapped in their box. While there is much to be said for developing your signature style, I find that my signature is strengthened through exercise. (It's not exercise if it's something you're used to!) My "style" is love, country, lyrics. I have written in this form for 28 years. Am I an expert? no. Does what I do work? Yes, but it could always improve. However, I don't improve by staying in the same rut, writing the same things over and over again. I improve by trying NEW things. Are these poems better than my lyrics? NO, but when I go back to writing lyrics I am fresh, energized, and more experienced. Writing stuff I'm not comfortable with makes me write better inside my box! (Besides, it's FUN!!) Kudos for the idea!! Have fun with your contest!!

davethepoet the reason for some of the censorship as you call it is because our hostess is 13 therefore she would not be able to view those in adult catagories, and she will not lie to be able to do so. I'm a guest judge so to speak. The ultimate choice is hers!
The reason the three links are needed is so we can look at your "usual" style and compare, by best we meant the ones YOU like the best everyone has those. Even if you don't win those poems will be commented on and you will get feedback. If you comment one one of ours you get the points not us! It's the you scratch my back I'll scratch yours idea. If a poet does not have three poems then maybe this will encourage them to write more! I've never seen you comment on other contests that this is asked of the entrants so why now?
The creative aspect of this is to try something new a form that makes you uncomfortable or as mentioned if you write uplifting happy things 90% of the time try your hand at something dark. If you write about love and emotions try your hand at something political! There is where the creativity comes in.

I love this idea! My friend is exactly like this, she just writes about one thing and that's it. I mostly write dark stuff but I challege myself to write about happy stuff and completely random stuff. I'm not out the box, I'm not in the box. To me, there is no box. I love the line "If they throw tomatoes- eat them!"

Hi Regarding your comment “It sickens me to look around and see many poets stapled to audience approval's” yes that is a pity – but it is much worse when people just write to shock people and show off – this is much worse, and sadly very common on AP – Albert.

I hate to say it Albert but it's pretty much a certian age group that does it. They don't seem to realize that after reading 3-4 of them they all become the same.
Thank you for stopping by I couldn't agree with you more.
