The History Of Marijuana
----------------------------------
The history of Marijuana can be traced as far back as man himself. But for sanity's sake I only researched back to the Native Americans. Native Americans used Marijuana for many things, such as religious ceremonies, as a medicinal herb, and as a pre-battle smoke to calm their nerves.
Hemp was an important part of early colonist life, as early as 1629. Hemp was one of the first crops our forefathers produced, which in turn became paper, clothing, and rope. Virginia even introduced legislation that exacted penalties on farms that didn't produce hemp in 1762.
Before he was the first president of the United States, George Washington was a hemp farmer. There were found notes in his diary about the quality of the hemp, and how he separated the male plants from the female plants. For all you growers out there, you know the male is best used for hemp and the female plant is best suited to become saturated with resin and flower. Even thought his is true, there is still no hard evidence to say that George Washington smoke the female plants.
With the invention of the Cotton Gin in 1793 by Eli Whitney, hemp farming began producing less profit. For this reason many farmers switched from hemp farming to a more profitable crop. Eventually the price of hemp dropped until it was no longer profitable, and many farmers began growing tobacco, which we all know is so much better for you then marijuana.
But marijuana didn't die out, far from it. There's an old saying, “Whenever one door closes, another door opens.” Marijuana might not be producing money as clothing and rope anymore, but it would soon find a home in the medical area. The United States Pharmacopeia recognized Marijuana for it's medicinal value as early as 1850. They found it could be used to treat lack of appetite, gout, migraines, pain, hysteria, depression, rheumatism, and many other illnesses. Even though the listing in the USP has since been removed, many adherents point to the medicinal value of marijuana as a major point for legalization.
Medicinal Marijuana didn't last long; dosage regulation was becoming a major concern. Different plants were different strengths, and their effectiveness would last for different times. Another problem was that ingesting marijuana didn't produce the desired effects for hours, and sometimes the user wouldn't get a desired effect at all. Different people would get different effects. Another problem was that marijuana isn't soluble and can't be injected. With the increased use of morphine the demand for medicinal marijuana decreased.
This was written by me, but the information came from a website I found yesterday. If it sounds familiar that's probally why.
