Hey all, it’s the APT Tourney’s Plagiarism Committee once again with some more important information about the Tourney and some rules concerning the plagiarism factor.
The APT Tourney’s rules on Plagiarism are basically the same as Allpoetry.com’s rules. If you have forgotten what these rules are, or don’t know them; they are:
“Plagiarism is the act of posting someone else’s work without giving credit to the true author.
The administration considers plagiarism to be a grievous offense and we will take immediate action when found. It is intellectually dishonest and is a direct threat to other poets’ intellectual property.
Poets who are found to have plagiarized will be banned for a week on first offense. On the second offense, the poet will be banned indefinitely. “
Taken from: http://allpoetry.com/special/policies
However, as we are a special section of Allpoetry.com we are handling plagiarism a little differently. As plagiarism is an act of stealing, even in small parts it is against rules. Thus we will be checking each poem, and if enough is plagiarized; not only will the offender be kicked out of the tourney, the offender will be reported to the moderators for action to be taken on their desires.
Each poem will be checked over by several people, through several search engines.
Since most (if not all) of the poems that are for the Tourney will be specifically written for the Tourney, we ask you not to post the newly created poem on another website until after that round is completed. If you were to do so, it may create problems which in turn may result in a false accusation.
The easiest way around these rules is to not plagiarize. Why would you want to dishonestly win a Tourney, as it would show not your skill but how well you can copy and paste?
Thanks for your time!
We are also always looking for some fresh faces to join us in the Tourney and Plagiarism Committee! To apply for the Tourney, go to: allpoetry.com/poet/group/AP%20Tourney. Then after the fact, to apply to the Plagiarism Committee, go to: allpoetry.com/poet/group/APT%20Plagiarism%20Committee. Thanks again!

What is a Tourney?

If someone is using an Asian poetic form, how would the use of honkadori with the tournement regulaters be deemed?

Lol. Most people can't do my name. Lol.
Well we've already decided that if the poem meets the percentage, the poet will be ejected from the Tourney. However, we are not allowed to fine the poet, as we do not have the authority. That is why we will refer the plagiarist to the mod who then can fine the poet and/or ban them. Thanks for your interest! -
Sorry MeesterFoppoteee?? lol Can't say your darn name. Um, yea, sorry I did read the article, and know it's about the tourney and not AP itself, but somehow (as usual) I got off the track and started babbling about plagiarism itself, and thought that anyone caught doing it should be tossed off the site for good (includ. the tourney). Now that's just my view, and I know you guys got your own rules, but to let someone back in after being caught (if indeed they stole a poem or your "percentage" just assumed that), but if they did then I think they should be let go and fined or something, depending on severity, how many times they did it, or first offense, etc. Sorry if I confused anyone. I realize you were talking about the tourney.
Hmmm, don't know much about it really, just saw the article and looked interesting...but as far as entering, not sure if I'm good enough or how to go about it, haven't entered many contests. lol Thanks!

How many of you have actually read the article? glazecovered and I? Is that really it? Because caveat emptor, if you read it you would know that the article was concerning the procedure of the Allpoetry Tourney on how we will be dealing with plagiarists in the Tourney itself. People please read the column! It has little to do with the actual workings of the website. However, it is a major part of the AllPoetry Tourney. Thanks for your interest anyway?
And to answer your questions Lone Poet pertaining to the Tourney...
The poems written for the Tourney are not allowed to be posted elsewhere on the internet until after that round is closed, and judging is finished.
We already have a percentage of the poem picked out, that if it meets this percentage or higher; we are referring to it as plagiarized. If we were to find this percentage word for word from other poems somewhere, then that would be considered our proof. You would then be 'confronted' by the Tourney officials, most likely ejected from the Tourney, and then turned over to the moderators of the website to take care of the rest.
Remember y'all. This column is not for the entire website. Noone has the time or patience to read over every poem on the website, and search for it elsewhere. This column is though, for the Allpoetry Tourney which is coming soon. Think about being a competitor! -
Oh, but what if someone accuses you and you did NOT plagiarize? How do you prove you didn't? I have hundreds of poems, almost 1000 I think, but who's counting? lol But many of them on several sites and can't keep track. I don't have them registered yet, though you don't have to, it's protected soon as you write it...but it's possible people do think alike, and titles aren't copyrighted, but what if someone jsut thinks alike and you have similar ideas or some sentences (I don't mean half a poem), how can you accuse someone without proof, and for that matter how can you prove it? I would feel terrible if I accused an innocent person, or even worse if they accuse me. lol
I would never intentionally copy poems but hey, sometimes we copy subconsciously when we read other poems, we don't realize we're thinking of same words, it's on deeper brain level, happened to me and luckily I caught it and changed my words. I have no problem changing something if I know someone else wrote it first, but don't just say you did just to accuse me or someone else. So how do we protect ourselves? Okay, off my soapbox.

Sorry bout that, thought I bored you to death. I know I write too much sometimes. lol
-
whoa, man. chill. i wasn't talking about your comment. i was referring to the column. but even at that i was just joking. plagarism...i wrote this before...joke...ha ha?
-
Yeah, so what's your point? lol I didn't read other comments and i'm adding my own story, okay? Everyone has something to say that's important.
-
i'm pretty sure i wrote this all before...

Hmmm, I got a big problem with plagiarism. I think as it's illegal for one, they should be kicked off the site for good and either charged (if the person decides to press charges, espec. if they are publishing) or fined or something legal. Otherwise they will just act like it's no big deal, slap on the wrist and ban them for a while, then they're back and start over again, with new name, etc. I had it done to me but couldn't prove it, the person denied it but was more than few words, more like several whole sentences and a specific idea that wasn't too common, considering they couldn't spell or use good grammar, I could tell it was more of my words. And whoever uses Poetry.com, it's a SCAM!!
(aka Library of Poetry, aka whatever...) Been there, done that. lol Thanks for sharing this, it's good issue to point out, hope more of them are caught and brought to justice...music plz, plays Baretta theme song (from 70's tv show, duh!!), "if you can't do the time, then don't do the crime...don't do it, no don't do it...

The limitations of Google searches to detect plagiarism:
I Googled a line of poetry I wrote a year ago. It is from
'The Memory of Hands". This is the line.
We are broken, made new,
haunted, like lost limbs
the memory of hands.
Using: www.2learn.ca/mapset/SafetyNet/plagiarism/sleuth/StringSearchnew.html
the following, ostensibly worrisome, result came up:
[The Collected Poems of Rupert Brooke - Part 6
... It was some trick of the firelight That made me see her there. ... We are alone. ... But Winter's
broken and earth has woken, And the small birds cry again; And the ...]
The hits were on the words: made, We and broken. But in no way is it suggested
by the information that my lines are other than my own.
But doing a POETRY plagiarism check and hitting on a POEM, without detailed analysis,
could raise an unfounded concern.
PS- While I chose the title to my poem because it told the story of the poem,
which is about losing my father, leaving me with phantom memories of him
using the metaphor of "lost limbs, the memory of hands"-- a Google search
reveals a text entitled "The Memory of Hands" - about expatriate Muslims
living in the United States. Go figure!

Whether they will get banned or not is up to moderators to decide. They will for sure be banned from the Tourney, and most likely banned from AllPoetry for a period of time. If your poetry gets stolen, and you see it, please let moderators know until something is done! Plagiarism is a serious offence.
If you have anymore questions, please don't be afraid to ask.

What we are trying to say, is that if you post the poem you wrote for the Tourney on another website, it creates problems for us. Because when we see if it is plagiarized, we'll see it on another website and if we do not know that taht person is you, we might accuse you of plagiarism. So if you absolutely must post your AP Tourney poetry elsewhere before the Tourney is over, then at least mention somewhere in the poem that you post on another account, that it is written for AP Tourney. Got it?
If you have any more questions, don't be afraid to ask.
~Anastasia -
I post my poems at several sites, three of them I am a Moderator. I post my first draft here a lot of the time?
This article is a little confussing.

good, does that mean that plagiarists who have still got their stolen poems up {even if it is just a few lines} will get banned? because i've had mine stolen and i've complained and nothing has been done, sooooo helpful.

Scary...several people and engines

This is only for the Allpoetry.com Tourney that is in it's planning stages, and not for the entire site. The first part is however. People are going to post their poems everywhere, that's a given. We are just asking for those that are a part of the Tourney not to use pre-writes posted else where, and not to post their newly created poem elsewhere on the internet until after the round is completed. Thanks for your interest though!

I don't know if this applies to me or not, but I have written a poem called The True Man and entered it into a contest. The contest, however, is not associated with this site but for poetry.com. They have posted my poem using my actual name. I just didn't want to cause any problems. I thought I should say something just in case.

*is waiting to be admitted into the groups* Me want in darn it!

"The administration considers plagiarism to be a grievous offense and we will take immediate action when found." I'm sorry to hear that you're lost. If I see you I'll let you know where you are.

Great job. I held a contest once..and someone entered a poem..that was actually a song from a tv show!
i had no idea either! I didnt find out until after I had judged and placed them with a gold trophey, it was horrible. Great job for pushing poets hard to not steal poetry or anything of the sort.
