ECHO VERSE

A poem in which the last syllable or two of a main line is repeated, perhaps with different spelling or meaning, as if an echo; usually this echo will be indented to a point under or beyond the syllable it mimics and will function as an independent line of one or two syllables.
Sometimes the word echo will precede the repetition, like to identify the speaker in a play. Echo Verse can often serve an ironic purpose, the meaning of the echo conflicting with what the original sound means example ‘know’ echoed by ‘no’. On the other hand an echo poem can be used simply as another kind of rhyme.

example (by me lol)

The window clears, I peer through a pane
Pain
My life on view,I see a loss, not a gain
Again
Where amongst the shards lies my worth?
Earth
Did you ever look and see, too?
To
Did you ever feel and see the dearth?
Earth
Was it obvious to your eye?
I
Did you know what you would become?
Come
Look now, before the long night.
Night

An introspective poem written when I was at a low.

Here the ‘echo’ serves a secondary purpose in that it is ordered and tells its own story which compliments the rest of the piece.

Pain again, earth to earth (ashes to ashes). I come, Night

The window clears, I peer through a pane

Rather obvious and using a well established method of referring to life as seen through a window. The window clears is a nod in the direction of the apparent clarity that tragedy brings to a life.

My life on view, I see a loss, not a gain

Morbid depression strikes

Where amongst the shards lies my worth?

My life is broken, what did I ever do that was worthwhile?

Did you ever look and see, too?

Self-pity, am I the only one who does this?

Did you ever feel and see the dearth?

I am alone, the quest for a fellow sufferer

Did you know what you would become?

Were you wiser than me?

Look now, before the long night.

Don’t wait, like I did

The whole piece is a realisation of imminent death and a realisation that the life that preceded it was, largely, of no particular worth.

Still here though! lol
