Ignorance Is No Excuse For The Law

-x-
Since the beginning of time, the human race has felt the need to show their power by use of violence and fighting. We show no discrimination towards what we fight for whether it is the most beautiful woman in the world, Christianity, or in The Crucible’s case, Witchcraft. Towards the beginning of the play, Tituba (the servant in the Williams’ house) willingly confessed to Witchcraft; however, she was given two options: confess or die. Any rational human mind would choose to confess if they valued their life and most people thought in this mentality. There were few exceptions in the village that practiced what they preached in their faith.  When Tituba confessed, she named other people in the village as well, therefore opening the door for finger pointing. The girls who were caught “dancing in the woods and conjuring spirits,” caught on to this trend and became the center of the onslaught of Salem. They chose to get rid of various people in the village by accusing them of Witchery. Although the girls knew very well what they were doing, the reverend and Parris were doing what they thought was right for the “greater good.”  At the end, several characters discovered what had happened, but knew it was too late for the few devout followers to confess to their false accusations. So, in turn, they were forced to watch their loved ones die for their righteousness alone. It is never all right to take another person’s life for a thought of an isolated group’s belief system. If we, as a human race, continue to do so, we will have created a barren and monotonous world simply for our view of the “greater good.”For English.
