Encouragement for Performers

The following are just some general points that show the benefits of being a part of a slam.  In a poetry slam, there can only be one winner who takes ALL!  Yes there is a silver and bronze trophy, but the GOLD takes all the points involved.  It would not be a slam if this were not the case. However, while there is only one winner, every person who enters a slam is a winner, and receives many benefits that he may not even consider.  Here are just a few that i have thought of that might also ease your mind before the competition.

-  You will learn to express yourself in writing under pressure
-  If you get nervous on stage, this is your chance to overcome it, and be proud of yourself!  
-  You will have so much fun you will forget that you are shy!  So please relax, and enjoy yourself above all else.
-  This is your chance to get up and 'do your own thing'.  Within the rules of course
-  You will learn that everyone is not the same, that everyone has their own point of view.  Everyone will be given the same criteria to work with, but will create completely different poems.
-  You will learn that you can change the meaning of a poem just by the way you say it, or by the subtle use of different punctuation, and spacing.  You will learn from your own efforts and from the other performers.
-  You will learn to go on even if you mess up!  
-  You will learn that you get better the more you do it.  So keep slamming even after this one is over!

    I have performed on stage for 18 years as an actress, nervousness is good, it becomes energy when in front of an audience. Different people see in different ways but everyone can relate to certian things, actors know this. The real secret is to control the audience. You have to get them off the rip, (get 'em from the beginning) run the show, never let 'em see ya sweat! Going on even when you mess up is called "cover and recover" the same with lines in a play. "Pratcice makes perfect"... that is why performance artists rehearse so much. It really works. Great advice here my friend.

    Okie dokie. This kinda makes me want to enter a few contests with a 'slam' poem. hmm.. I'll have to think about it. I can't spend too much time on the computer.
