If you are ready for some excitement on the other hand, keep reading- you are in for the on-line show of your life. First, I want you all to pause....that's right pause in a moment of silence...and...pray...hehe just kidding. No just pause, okay....and think about the very best live performance you have been to ever in your life. Go back to that place. Remember the excitement of that night. Let it wash over you. And now get ready to feel that all over again- on-line here in this very contest box.
Now get ready to use your imagination again. Transform this contest space into a theater, a night club, and arena, wherever your imagination takes you, cause that is where you are right now. And on the night of the show this place will be filled up with no seats left for all to enjoy all the amazing performances that will be put on right on this stage. I will be your MC for the night. You will find the performers area in the entry area, where talented poets will compete against each other and PERFORM LIVE their poetry! They will not just be submitting poetry, they will be performing it in front of a live audience. In the comment section, you will find the distinguished judges(which will be randomly determined on opening night), as well as the audience who will interactively JUDGE the performances with a special ballot box, and the applaudomaticmeter. People you are in for the most exciting trip you have ever been on at AP. We can't sell pizza, and popcorn, but you can bring that with you, and throw the popcorn at the performances you don't like. That is right- booing will be allowed as well as applauses.
There will also be special prize give aways that night- many lottery draws of various point amounts. So yes people, you will want to come an be a part of it all. Lets recap the way you can participate:
-as an audience member(which automatically makes you a judge if you choose to judge)
-as a performer(if you think you have what it takes to show off your wit, skill, and style on stage under time pressure- you will most definitely want to perform and see if you can make it through the last stage!).
-as a distinguished random judge
I promise that every person here will have the time of their lives- not just the performers. It is a real community event for all to enjoy!!!
Following you will find the date and time of the show, the show agenda, and rules for performing and judging. (All are provisional, and open to revision). Be prepared for a fun night with many outstanding surprises. Who says an Internet slam can not be hosted on the Internet!!!
DATE AND TIME: AUGUST 14, 2004 7:00 PM PACIFIC TIME(SHARP)
Go here to calculate your time:
www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=14&month=8&year=2004&hour=19
SHOW ITINERARY: THE MAIN SHOW(we will also have opening and closing acts, intercession, and lottery draws)
STAGE 1: STORYTELLING(tell the best story in 8 lines or less complete with action, conflict, point of view, setting, and a surprise. Subject will be MC's(my)pick)
STAGE 2: HUMOR(The best off the top of your head limericks and senryus)
(Subject will be MC's(my) pick).
STAGE 3: DANCE(Perform your very best dance through poetry- your pick- ballet, modern, tap, anything your heart desires- just let the audience feel it, so they are entranced or inspired by you).
STAGE 4: MUSIC(Sing your very best song or play a musical instrument through poetry. We need to feel the sawy, the beat, the kind of song it is- but it's all up to you. you can perform pop, or if you dare a concerto. Just be creative, and move us!) You must show, not ever tell what you are doing! IE if you are playing a violen, you must play it, not tell us you are playing it.
STAGE 5: POETICS(Using all your best literally skills, on the spur of the moment, you must perform according to the subject given to you).
Now that is just the beginning. After each stage the audience will be asked to judge each round. After the final fifth stage there will be a 20 minute intermission, and all total scores will be tallied. The top 1 or 2 people from each round will be in the final rounds which will test their skills to the max. We will have three minute rounds from now on, and there will be a narrowing until only three performers are left, and then two against each other until there is a final ONE GOLD WINNER. The other two will of course win the silver and the bronze.
PERFORMANCE RULES:
1)Each stage will last 5 minutes only. So you really must be prepared to write off the top of your head under pressure. You must perform your OWN work in 5 minutes or less!
You MUST paticipate in every stage as a performer.
2)You will be given the subject on the spot right before you must start writing- excluding the dance and music rounds. However you can not prepare a dance and song ahead of time, as you will be given the number of lines you can use at the time of performance, along with any other special technicalities.
3)Difficult allusions, obscene language, obscure references, or antiquated language are NOT suitable for this slam show. remember you are performing for a general audience, and your job is to ENTERTAIN THEM. Be assured that they will judge according to how well you have entertained them!!!
4)Performance is open to anyone in the AP community!!
5)All styles, forms, and subject matter are welcome unless given as a requirement at the moment of performance by the MC(me). Sonnets, haiku, villanelles, raps, rants, ballads...dark, drama, inspirational, any AP poetry category....all our welcome!
6)The final stage will not be known to anyone but me until the moment of performance. There will be as many 3 minute rounds as it takes to narrow down to one performer left. That person will have won the GOLD, and the points that go with it.
7)ALL performers have a chance to win points through applauses. The performers and the audience will all have a chance to win points through lotteries.
JUDGING RULES
1)The audience will judge according to how much you have over all entertained them through applauses.
2)Competition will also be judged on a point system by 5 randomly chosen judges(selected at the opening of the night from the audience), who will judge on a ballot for each Level as outlined below:
Specific ideas
Writing Skills
Poetic Innovation
Freeing HIS OWN voice
Over all Performance
Each level will each have it's own specific ballot special features.
The final stages will only include the audience as judges with the applauseometer.
3)As a performer, once you are 'out of the show', you will automatically become an audience member and general judge.
THAT'S IT Folks, for now.
Please do something. If you have read this far than chances are you may be interested in coming or performing at this slam. I also may need volunteers to fulfill various duties.
IF you are interested, please leave your name in the comment section, and let me know that you are coming, and if you think you want to be a performer, please let me know that as well.
This is going to be a lot of high pressure, but it will be exciting and enjoyable for all!!!!
You have two weeks to prepare yourself. I will give you tips on preparing for the slam in the next couple of days. Until then, the best thing that you can do is acquaint yourself with the rules and structures. If you have any questions whatsoever, please IM me!

I will be updating this page regularly, so please check in as often as you'd like. Any new news will always be found numbered in this section.
1)SPONSERS I am looking for sponsers to help make this a big event.
You can be a sponser in the following ways:
-feature this show in the feature box.
-tell your friends by word of mouth
-donate points. But do not SEND them to me. Send them to JENP. Any donated points will be used to run the lotteries, and give out points to those who succeed through the stages, win the silver and bronze trophies, and for special categories like boobie awards, ect. Right now, the only points given will be for lotteries, and the GOLD. Plus performers will rack up points through applauses.
-Advertise this contest on your author page, or in your group.
IF you become a sponser in any sense, your name will be feautured on this page. This show will run, no matter how many performers, or how few judges we have, but the bigger, the more exciting it will be.
2)To help the show run as smoothly as possible, please know all the rules before hand. If you have any questions whatsover, IM me.
3)NEWEST NEWS
If you have already decided to enter AS A PERFORMER, please write a slamming introduction of yourself as your first emtry.
3)QUESTION AND ANSWER
Q: I don't like the idea of applauses, since many bad poems get applauded.
A: This is a poetry slam. You are here to put on your best performance, and hopefully that translates into entertaining the audience, but please prepare yourself to go away with no reward even if your performance is objectively the best or of you think it is the best. We will have five selected judges who will judge by criteria, and a general audience who will decide what they liked the best. These two scores will be averaged together. The best man will not always win, but very well could. Just be prepared for a night of fun.
Q: Can there be 7 or 8 judges
A: There will be 5 randomly chosen judges from the audience. However remember, the whole audience will be judging with applauses! The five randomly chosen judges will have a ballot of strict criteria that they must use.
Q: I wanna be a judge
A: If you are an audience member you will automatically be a judge. However the 5 judges are randomly selected fom the audience on opening night. You will have as much chance as being selected as anyone else.
Q: I'm confused. It seems chaotic
A: I will be posted a link to the detailed show program on here. Please print it out and read it ahead of time, and have it with you to follow for the show.
Q: I want to donate points. How much is reasonable?
A: It's up to you. Send all your donations to JENP, NOT TO ME.

)Hello. The above article was written by me for a contest I am currently putting on at All Poetry. It will be of interest to those of course who want to enter the contest, but also to those who are interested in what it takes to organize a slam either on or off line. You will also find my subsequent articles helpful as well.

FUCK!
I don't do limericks and senryus

I will donate some points to help sponsor. Great idea. Maybe someday soon, we'll get that AP Poetry Convention organized as well.
