More updates! Poems by online users, Return the favor

Poems by online users has replaced rewards as the default for when you click the 'read' link. I've also cleaned up the sidebar when browsing poems, and simplified the 'add a feature' page.

When making a comment, you can choose a poem of yours to ask the person to 'return the favor' by commenting. Seemed like it might make that a more social feature.

Journals now autosave drafts like they should, and a few dozen other bugs have been fixed. The chatroom hopefully will lag less now as well.
The next changes I'm contemplating involve perhaps making friends and favorites separate, independent lists. And being able to browse poems by either easily.

Updates about new columns/contests/etc would likely only come from friends. And the name of favorites would be changed, I'm not sure what to yet

Choosing a poem of ours when making a comment -- I find even more helpful than that in an unexpected way: it has caused me to pay more attention to my own earlier poems, even to the extent of revising some of them for using this way. Thanks Kevin!

  • Is there going to be a new reward system? Featuring poetry requires too many points and half of the people who click don't read the poetry. With rewards less points are at stake.

    OR

If rewards are still here, I can't find them anymore.

I have an issue with the favorites/friends thing, especially for those of us who don't have gold memberships and can't hide those lists from others who visit our pages (unless you've changed that and us free users CAN hide the lists). Members here are an awful emotional lot and might get their panties in a twist to see they are on one but not both lists. For instance, I may like someone personally, therefore they are a friend, but their poetry may not be great, lets say, and wouldn't land them on my favorites list. That might leave the more insecure souls feeling a little bitter.

My opinion is to just have one list, no matter what you call it, and we add someone to it for whatever reason we deem necessary. It wasn't broke before, so why fix it? Please, for the love of poetry, don't make this a Hallmark Facebook. I couldn't stand it.

  • Is there a way to see if you have a poem or something thats been added to someones bookmark list

It will show up at the bottom of the poem below your author's notes if it is on a list, but bookmarks you can't see

well I was hoping it was finally where you could see who had your poems bookmarked everyone don't have the ability to make list

  • Also, why is the list recent poems link at the very bottom of the poem page? I don't think anyone is going to notice it there. Wouldn't it make more sense to have it under the comment box, and not under all the comments?

Edit: Nevermind, I checked again and it is under the comment box...but it's also at the very bottom of the page for some reason...

  • Couldn't we assign which updates we want from who instead and have them categorized differently? Like, Friends is at the top of the page, and Favorites would be below them or something?

Does the name 'Poems by online users' mean that every user whose poem you see there is currently on line? When a user who has posted a poem logs out, does the poem disappear from the list? If so, it would be disconcerting if you were in the middle of typing a comment. If not, why the new name 'online'?

      correct, they're online right then.

and only one poem is shown per user. it actually looks through their last 3 poems to find the one with the least comments too.

in the middle of a comment - shouldn't matter since you're on the poem page, eh? Or if using first impressions, shouldnt matter until you refresh the page.

    Favourites/Friends

I'm not sure why you feel that the current system and nomenclature for favourites and friends needs changing. It seems to work well as it is, and I haven't noticed anyone complaining about it. Maybe a little more explanation in the general pages for newbies, about how that system works, and the differences, would be welcome.

    A few suggestions:

How about mass categorize your poems
An actual 'inbox' to mass delete and see mass messages to friends.
    'Acquaintaces' as favorites.

Think about them some. Sorry about the...insert of two cents!

    That's nice

Just a thought - maybe we could each pick what to be notified of from each list? I'd rather be notified of my favorite poets' contests than my friends', personally. But that's a personal preference.

I like the updates - in theory anyway. I'll go check them out now

in general i dislike too much customization (make a complicated site even more complicated), but perhaps I could see this happening, hmm..

  • How about 'poets I read', after all that is what we are saying when we fave some one.

I read lots of the posted poems, so I don't know how a 'poets I read' category would work for me.

  • I don't know what's going on. but I reserved my place for a quickie and it never showed up. I couldn't see the other entrants and I couldn't see the prompts. It's really weird. Sometimes the contest would disappear all together and the reappear. Same with the reserve.

Does it really have to show the mood and quote of the poet?

It's quite distracting to see things like "i'm boo yah".

  • I can has normal browsing back, please?

  • A sugestion! It would be great to increase the friendship feature, but let's not completely disregard the favorites thing. I understand that you have no intention on doing so, but here's my suggestion.
Spotlight the friends feature, but perhaps put a link, somewhere along the lines of "view favorites."
As far as a name for favorites, perhaps acquaintances. This would be fitting because much like an acquaintance, this feature has some interaction among people. Thanks for looking out for all the hard working poets out there.

Thanks for the suggestions The idea with favorites is that its more like ppl you admire, vs. acquantines/friends, so a different style of relationship.

        Meaning of favourite.

putting someone on a favourites list is, at the moment, the nearest you can go to bookmarking a user page, so it serves that purpose. The fact that you then receive information about what that favourite is posting by way of poems, journals and contests is useful. It would be pity to be required to put people on a separate list in order to get parts of that.
Any declaration of admiration would probably come later, after getting to know the favourite's work better. I really can't see what would be achieved by formalising such a declaration. The admiration can already be expressed to the admired in comments. And at present there's nothing to stop a user making a list on the user's page, of other users whose work is admired (unless the lists feature is only available to gold users).
A separate category named 'acquaintances' wouldn't sound right, because in a sense every other user you encounter on AP becomes an acquaintance

      • Well, I'll ponder it, but perhaps if it's not broke then there's no way to fix it. Perhaps leave favorites as favorites. It seems to accomplish the purpose of your aforementioned "mission statement." Nothing jumps out at me that would be more fitting for admiration. For example, if I admire a musician's work, they are probably a favorite. Perhaps the name is better left unchanged. Although I am all for innovative ways to distinguish between the 2.
I'm sule that myself and the poetic public will be more than happy to help in this continuous process. You've ran this business long enough to know that you'll get feedback from all ends.

Oh god!! Can you explain how the 'return a favour' thing will actually look/work?
I'm not sure I want people bombarding me with poems they want me to return the favour on when they leave a comment! I just stopped people sending me links over IM recently...... thank goodness I'm not writing right now or that would drive me nuts!

well, the idea I was suggesting is that we'd basically have 2 lists. So you could add people to whatever list you want.

Would friends still be mutual? Hmm. So if you wanted contest updates you'd have to get them to accept you... how hard would that be?

I still don't get the point of two lists, Kevin. Is it really that difficult for people to keep things straight with only one list? Speaking only for myself, there are people on here that I enjoy reading and that I enjoy entering contests that they hold, but it doesn't necessarily mean that I am best friends with them. My personal opinion is that we shouldn't be required to ask anyone to "accept" us as a friend in order to get notification of contests, etc., just because we like to read them. I understand that this is an interactive poetry site, but it is looking more and more like all the other social networking sites, but with a little poetry thrown in for good measure.

        Mutuality

I certainly don't expect all my favourites to reciprocate, because our tastes in poetry might be quite different. And for the same reason, as well as the fact that I can only cope with a certain amount of daily information, I don't necessarily want to have to make favourites of everyone who might add me as a favourite. We can pick and choose at present, and that works well.

I am not really impressed by this change to the reward system, as we poets give points for those to read our poems, and we return the favor...I know that some new poets and those with less points feel they cannot afford to do so...But....we all began writing poetry just like they are doing, and I have found that being generous with our comments does have returns when we are sincere in critiquing others works...I would appreciate a second reconsidering about this drastic change, Kevin....Thanks...

Well, arguably rewards weren't working at all. So that system was offering a false hope that never paid out - ultimately more detrimental than the current system of the featured box.

I've got some other ideas about how to decrease the cost / help the featured box flow faster, so hopefully I'll get a chance to work on those soon. One thing at a time though!

Its not impatience, I just didnt want to have to return to rewrite my comments ad nauseam... perhaps a simple system message to all on AP would have alleviated the need for comments such as mine... other sites do it, and if we are advised that maintenance or an upgrade is being performed at a certain date and time, we could avoid the site for a while...

Do you talk to all the people here like that ?? or did you just single me out ? I wasnt the only one complaining about the issues...

There wasn't supposed to be any impact - it was a result of several bugs that anything happened, and was for a relatively short time period. Longer than I would have liked, but it kept seeming like it was going to be fixed any minute, so didn't seem necessary to put on the front page.

At any rate, I'm sorry if I offended you with my statement above. It's been a long and hairy day, and I admit to being somewhat offended by what you had written
