Here at last

Here comes my chance to prove myself and help other people find their recovery. I have worked over the past few months to improve my skills so that I my go on to college and be successful while I'm there. I am set to go to a place that will help me further improve my math, and reading skills so that when I start on my carrier path I will be able to keep up with the rest of my class.

A few years ago I became involved with an organization that is called V.E.S.I.D. Vesid is an acronym for Vocational, Educational, Services, for Individuals with Disabilities. At that point in time I wanted to go to work as a maintenance technician. They provided me with a good training course at a local school. After I completed the course, I found a good job at a neighborhood apartment complex. That job lasted for five years. After that time things happened that caused me to leave that position. After several jobs, I found a pt. time job. At that same time I attempted to go back to school full time. The schedule was too difficult for me to keep up with both my studies and my job. I eventually wound up dropping out of school, and a short time after that I wound up in the hospital very depressed, and suicidal. At that same time my Dr. told me to apply for SSI, and SSD. After a short period of time I was awarded both SSI and SSD. Then my life started getting very depressing. I wasn't working or doing anything else, just sitting around reading books. I told my therapist that I was bored and fighting with depression once again. At that point in time he made a referral to a place that would help me get back in the main stream again. After a while I was asked what I wanted to do when I went back to work. I told them that I wanted to help people find their recovery.

Now there is a woman who just joined the staff at my program who recently graduated from college. One day I asked this woman a question involving fractions. I figured that if anybody would know how to solve fraction problems it would be her. Instead she had me look at a series of books that dealt with everything from simple addition and subtraction all the way up the line to geometry. Well I thought to myself this will be a big help to me. I had struggled so much with the math while I was at school that I fell behind with everything else. Thus my dropping out.

For a long period of time I worked diligently at learning fractions then moving on to decimals then percentages. During this time I learned of a school that had a course that was called college prep. In order to be able to join this class I had to take a test that's called the TAB test. It covers reading and arithmatic. After I took the test I learned that I had a tenth grade reading level, and a sevenith grade math level. Needless to say I became very discouriged. I then gave up the lessons that I had been giving myself. After a while of feeling sorry for myself I picked up where I had left off. I thought that I had lost everything that I had learned. I was wrong, I can add fractions and I think I remember how to subtract them.

Well I finally got around to getting all of the paper work that I needed for VESID. And now I am waiting to schedule an appointment for services.
