Hopefully this will make some of you that were upset with the change a bit happier with the background potentials you can make.
Another minor update is that the notification of a successfully sent message is now shown a bit more obviously under the chatterbox.
Also, custom backgrounds should now sort by most-recently-used on top. Free backgrounds as well, though their list only will update every few days - but it should provide for the christmas ones to sink to the bottom of the list during not christmas.
I've gone through some of the most recent backgrounds, and added a few to the 'default list'. If you are upset that a background of yours has been included, please let me know and I'll remove it.
Happy writing!
On the edit background page, there are now checkboxes on the right to 1) have the background image stay on the left edge of the screen, and 2) turn off the line (if there was one).
These options are in the right column, under "Advanced".
If you want all of your past poems with left-justified images to be like this, a moderator can update them in bulk for you.

Kevin,
Thank you for the background fix!
I'd actually like to create some of the new type of backgrounds. Does Silver membership allow for that? -

Well I've been fussing with the images I updated to be compatible with Kevin's grand new design. The following three use three different background images with a centered content space. The left border is actually no longer a left border. In fact, in order to get the content space of the background image to center with the displayed content, I had to provide a negative horizontal offset of -17 pixels from the edge of the left border and then set the text offset of the image as saved here in AP to 1. Setting it to 0 causes all sorts of strange behavior--something Kevin doesn't seem to have accounted for.
So here are the three background images. I'm hoping Kevin will start taking these backgrounds and adding them to a new background category called "AP Compatible"--since not a one of the sidebars currently used as AP defaults are compatible with his bizarre changes:
This first one is created from a photograph of a piece of kamacite--an ore that contains iron and nickel. Beautiful stuff:
http://allpoetry.com/poem/4478959
This second is created from a photograph of a piece of elgin marble of a variety called "blue star". Beautiful specimen, and I was able to mask the seams fairly well by carefully selecting the crop area:
http://allpoetry.com/poem/4302779
This third is also created from a photograph of elgin marble, but of a variety dramatically different in appearance called "siena brocatelle":

I find I'm worried about spending all this time updating my custom background images and finding a way to make them work here at AP because Kevin is prone to make some dramatic new change obsoleting another wave of hard work.
Frustrating either way.
I still wish my old sidebars could have left justified content. Kev is being unreasonable on this matter. -

Yes thank you, I would love a helping hand in fixing all my backgrounds -
Well here's another edit: http://allpoetry.com/poem/4302779

you still haven't addressed the ugly bird.

Thanks Kevin! This is excellent

Kevin
I am noticing that when I go to customize my background, sometimes it won't let me choose the edges, only the main background and sometimes it will, I thought it was only with new backgrounds that I added but it seems to do the same thing with some of the older ones as well. See what I am trying to do is to create border that can be repeated on both edges, but have a center tiled background for the main background, just everytime I add the main tiled it tiles all the way across and doesn't allow me to customize the edge backgrounds. The links don't even show up.
Don't know if this is a glitch or something on my end. I will try to clean out temp files and see if it changes. -

Okay I got it fixed now
but I still have this white edge on both sides. I wonder if it is the pixel width. I have the edge one set at 1260?

Thank you Kevin

Thanks Kevin

Just a little note- with the left-bordered backgrounds, it's a bit obnoxious to see the border (I have a wide-screen moniter) begin about an inch into the screen and to see all the rest of it with the background pattern. But I like the way we can two-tone the screen now.

I've taken the traditional left sidebar border that this poem used to use and converted to the current: http://allpoetry.com/poem/4478959
This won't work for all sidebar images, but it should work for most of mine. Maybe you'll be able to do similar with some of your backgrounds. -
-
Nice job
I am currently trying to get mine to do something similar. Let me ask you. At what pixel width do you set your edge background? I have tried creating a boarder, and putting it on a plain white background, so that it shows on both edges but I am still getting a small white edge next to the text on both sides.

Thank-you,
I still dislike the centring but I accept that is a personal preference, I appear now to be able to get my pages to look more or less as I wanted them to.
Jeff -
Thank you Kevin for listening and acting accordingly. Life shines a bit brighter now.

Hi Kevin & Everyone!
When the recent page dimensions changed you advides 1600 pixels for BG width and no more than 200 pixels wide for the left hand margin, this works fine for me, but I am working off a 20 inch Sony Bravia TV screen which I use for a monitor.
On my 17 inch screen laptop it seems ok until I expand the page to view as stretched right across the monitor screen when it places the margin on the page more over to the right with a gap left of the side border, that then looks bad. If i decrease the width I lose the side border or the text overlays it.
So this is dependent upon the width of which your personally expand the browser window.
I know as a web designer that pages vary by way of viewing them from browser to browser, "Dreamweaver" as a programme contains elements which correct these differences, but anything designed in other programmes doesn't seem to. So what you see from browser to browser varies anyway, just to complexify things.
I use Mozilla Firefox as I detest Internet Explorer and point blank refuse to use it as there are just so many bugs in it and hidden viruses it is also old fashioned and borning and dull in design compared to Firefox which works faster to load pages anyway and has more fun add on's.
So you have to bear in mind the differences between browsers and the extend to which you prefer to expand your pages. Your monitor size shouldn't really make a difference if the basic web design is properly set.
I am now designing my backgrounds at 1600 width px with a max of 200 width px border as advised and I view my pages ok in that.
One thing that is irritating is where backgrounds obscure the text, or the text is unreadable becuase of the background colour against the the text. It makes reading pages a chore as opposed to a pleasure and I reckon it reduces the number of reviews.
I use a programme called "Adobe Photoshop Elements" to design my backgrounds and the gradient and texturizing effects you can get in that are fantastic and if you don't go OTT on either you can avoid obscurring the text.
I would be more than happy to design some backgrounds for anyone. It will have to be in between my client calls but offer is there ok!
Poetic Hugs to everyone and best of luck in all things to you all!
Kaz.

If you're getting text over your backgrounds, sounds like you need to increase the "left edge size" that's stored in the background when you upload it (just click 'edit' when it's selected on the background screen, or from your backgrounds list via my account).
It should force the page to scroll to the right, rather than display text over the left hand margin...
-
-
Any way we can get fill effects with the solid-color backgrounds?
-
-
-
I'm a tad confused. Is this going to be a gold/silver option only?
-
-
Nope, though it'll understandibly be more useful on backgrounds you've uploaded and want to make look a certian way.
-
-
oh kevin.. i'm talking about the ones you choose for your stuff.. like this one for instance- my 6th grade picture had this one behind me..
and kevin.. i'm old.

The text is far away from the border of this background
http://allpoetry.com/poem/4448737
But in that one, it isn't. Is that a glitch? -
-
you should leave in the left edge amount of 250 or whatever, it will keep it from squishing to the left when you narrow it.
Aah, which is what you did on the one that isn't far away from the border... -
-
Hmm'. I'm setting the correct border margins for all of them, but all of them are still away from the words...Ah well. Can't be bothered with it.
Thank you for providing this option.

-
Thank you tons. This has got to help with the centering thing that looked sloppy. Big thumbs up!
-
Thumbs up.
-
I will be testing this new option out on all of my backgrounds now, but so far, it seems to work.
-
im just more confused and still mad..you dont listen..just change..there was nothing wrong..its nice simple.
-
BIG KISSES
Thanks for the options Kevin
-
Love It
Great idea.
I just looked at the changes and I like what I see -
Totally Awesome
Wow, Thanks for these added options.
And hey feel free to snag any of my backgrounds any time to add to the default list lol
