Site layout updates

Today the announced change to center the page for people with large monitors took place.

Most bugs are fixed now. Please post if you notice things looking especially strange, and I'll try and take a look. Thanks to everyone for your support, and lets get back to poetry
If your beautiful userpage is horribly messed up and you don't have a gold membership to update it anymore, I might be talked into gifting you a few days so you can get it working

Lots of painful updates were made throughout the day today. I apologize if you were already trying to fix things, and my ever-few-hours site updates made that a struggle (though I did warn you here...)

Another change was made to the text for the casual vs. critical featured box. That's the next thing to be changed, but not for another month or so.

If one of your pages had an image that used to go across the full page, but is now showing a *white* or *grey* border edge, this is a bug - please leave a comment with a link to the page and I'll take a look!

So...the background for my page was jacked up and I just made it plain black. Begging for a few days of gold is so degrading, but I'd like the chance to fix my background and make it usable with the new layout. *sigh*

    Quick Question

Are fixed background no longer possible on author pages?

Fixed backgrounds have never been possible...? If you mean by fixed that you scroll the page and the image stays in the same place.

If you mean a background that starts in the upper left corner, do a tiling image and make it reallly big, so that it doesn't ever tile...

        I had

a fixed backgound, which was a bordered background that was stationary as I scrolled on my author page. Once the update happened it went away.

Xianaria, I think I got your page looking the way you wanted. I used your custom background as the inner "tiling" background, then set the "edge" background to black.

Unfortunately free gold week/time ends up being rather difficult to handle on a site-wide basis. But yes, we do hope to do this again in the future, though probably not very soon

Hmm, it's working for me in firefox, internet explorer 6.0, 7.0, safari, and opera.

Perhaps try clearing your temp files, closing all browsers, and opening a fresh one? Otherwise try firefox, http://getfirefox.com

Despite what anyone else may say, this is looking great. The fixed size is going to make reading much easier no matter what your monitor size. As writers, you'd think most people would realize this!

Love what you're doing. Thanks for everything!

I certainly hope the bugs are the side gutters of pages which have really skewed the layouts of any graphic pages we have done.

I really hope you will change this. The lines down either side showing blank gutters are really distracting and are wasted space. AND there is a box around the title of the poems which really looks bad.

I am so hoping that these are the bugs that will be worked out. I am all for changes that will make this site user friendly, but no aesthetically poor. Presentation in may cases is key to what we do here.

Wow, the background on your page is beautiful.

The spacing you have for the beige vs. red area won't work though (and will have looked strange on 50% of monitors with the old site as well - the screen width changed depending upon the size of their monitor).

I'd suggest you make the beige color continue out much farther to the right.

An update soon should fix the left edge with very large left-edge images like yours.

Thanks Kevin. Well, I did get it to work and I think we will get used to it once we move forward. Have to manipulate the gap and cut and paste the graphic a bit but it is workable.

        Thanks for the patience.

Sadly to say that those are not the bugs...Its doomed to stay like that until Kevin changed it again.

But I do too hope that some of it will change a bit when he is all done

Our current presentations are ruined. It will take hours of work to get the same effects now trying to adjust the backgrounds to fit the page properly.

I agree with Pam. For those of us who use and/or make backgrounds, it is very...aggravating to find that the backgrounds are split vertically in half. Anything that has horizontal words on the borders are going to be completely ruined.

    May I suggest something?

I'm not going to wait for an answer. I've read a bit around and I hear rumors that you will change the sides leaving a blank space...
Well, that's not gonna be popular among the background designers (Speaking for myself in numbers). That means we have to re do most of our backgrounds to match, also, I've taken a look at how my backgrounds look like now and it is horrible.
If you absolutely need that blank space on the sides, at least let us change the color on it, and do not let the background apply there.
Let me explain a bit better, on both sides where we now have that colorful pattern, make that area blank, and let us chose the color for it. Then we come to the background, where the blue'ish area is here, let the background apply there and not on the sides as it currently is.
I think this would look quite nice with a little practice.
Imagine a gray themed background with black and white photographs, with making that blank area black or white we can make the background stand more out. Are you with me?

But then again, if you do like my idea I feel sorry for myself for then I have hundreds of backgrounds to re do.

Thank you for your time, Merosa D.

Left-edge backgrounds, which it looks like you were making most, will not have a colored "edge".

They will wrap around to (hopefully) stay flush with the left edge of the centered screen.

Making left-edge backgrounds "to fit" is a dangerous activity, since everyone sees the page differently. I go into it abit in a column about this here: http://allpoetry.com/column/show/2346307

Some pages (yours, in particular heh) I'm still playing with how to make them fit the current version better... It's very difficult, as some like your author page have a very large edge on the side. This has actually probably looked terrible to people with small monitors for some time, causing the entire right half of the screen to need to be scrolled to the right...

About changing the 'edge' color, that is a new option that you should see in the background chooser...

I am being spoiled by a very wide screen, I think they are called whide-screens

If its so much work, why change it? I haven't done graphicing for long, but its always been the same and I started off with those simple left edge'd backgrounds.

I do hope you will improve the edge wraping a bit, since right now its just weird. But I guess in due time I will get used to it, and I will figure out a way to make the backgrounds look better.

I will have a look at that column right away. By the way, thank you for the fast answer
