Site Updates

Drafts are here! And autosaving every minute while you're adding your poem. To view drafts, click 'add from a draft' on the right of the add page.

Also a new format for browsing notes, advanced mode now defaults to the regular allpoetry header, and the 'Read' button under the featured box goes straight to a 'quick comment' page that should help keep down featured bid costs.
Other new things:
  1. 'My wall' is trying on 'Visitor Book' to see how that feels. It's shopping for some nice clothing
  2. Some chatterbox updates - clicking on a name will now send a message to that person a message. The chatroom should now stop scrolling nicely when you scroll back up in it.
  3. Drafts work with columns, contests, and items.
  4. We've expanded moods, they should be shown more often in the menu that appears over usernames.
  5. Contests are now limited to posting 3 per day, so that everyone can share front-page contest space.
  6. Favorites list now shows latest moods of your friends, and is sorted by how long since they visited. If that makes your list really long, perhaps you have too many favorites?
  7. You also get a note when people change their moods. We've had some complaints initially about this being too much spam, but we'll give it a week then put up a poll about it.
  8. Lots of other exciting things too
Updates:
  1. Notes from the last day show how long ago they were made.
  2. No more notifications when people update their moods
  3. Favorite list ( http://allpoetry.com/favorite/show/ ) still shows moods, but in a thinner style.
  4. Auto-briefs (the 2 line preview) should work better for new poems posted.
  5. Storywrite classes are getting started, check out the teachers group there if you are interested.

Thanks for being a member of allpoetry!

Can I please make a suggestion that somewhere on AP you have a clock that tells us when AP's day rolls over so I know when I can put up a new contest etc. if I've already done my 3 for the day... as there are so many different countries represented here.. I think an AP Clock would be a good idea

on the help page it says: "The current allpoetry time is August 10 11:31AM. The 'end of day' is 2 am. "

Thanks! I was told that by a greeter too. But when I checked the time it said 3.45am and the 'end of day' was 2am .. so almost two hours past the end of day... I hadn't posted a contest for at least 5 hours. And it wouldn't let me post another.. I tried for about 4 hours after that time and it still wouldn't let me post one.. so not sure why given it was supposed to be a new day...

could be a 24 hour period, regardless what the site time is. If it went by site time, then you could post 6 contests in a row.

You could? I would have thought it would have calculated from 2am to 2am and allowing only 3 contests per member in that period. How do I find out when my 24 hours period starts and ends?

lol.. sorry to be a pain... I'm just confused a bit.. can you check with Kevin or the site administrators how that works?

THanks for replying by the way

No idea...I'm just guess, really. The new way was set up because people were flooding the contest area with contest after contest, pushing other site member's contests down and out of sight.
Maybe it times it after your third contest is posted. No idea. Guessing.

Yes, I understand why it was set up, that's cool... but it seems to not be working correctly..

It still won't let me put a contest up and I did 2 yesterday, the other was the day before

Thanks again.. I think there's a glitch in the system somewhere.. I've informed the mods

Do all these updates count for Storywrite, too?
  • well it doesn't matter about all these fancy updates.

My mood is not updating properly and goes into the "quote" category and my option for writing my quote it completely gone when I try to edit my profile.

This is ridiculous. I am a paying member and free accounts work and mine doesn't? What the heck is going on?

Yeah, the wall is facebook. You can't have the wall here too. I'm sure you've heard this already. But yeah, facebook has the wall. Don't use that. that's not cool.

the drafts is awesome, since browsers seem to freeze a lot when adding new poems.

    I Like It!

I like all the new updates and everything that goes along with them!!!
    They are sweet!!
  • notes...

there's a small tiny issue with them, too. >>
when you write the first line in a note, and then hit enter to move to the next line, it doesn't work. it leaves it on the same line.

    EX:
"the updates on this site are amazing.
but the first line of a note is messed up."

    would be turned into:
"the updates on this site are amazing. but the first line of a note is messed up."
  • The Note Section.

I just checked it and had a heart attack.

    I don't get it.
  • Drafts are a WONDERFUL idea!!!

I miss the how many hours I have been on since I was a member. I had like 900 hours.

Do you think you could do something where you could turn off the mood setting? I find it annoying that it says on my home page "My mood is , and quote is 'A smile does not equate to happiness;'" in my opinion, the moods take away from my view of the site, but that's just me...
  • the clicking on a username or group and getting a message is really annoying, i would rather it just link to the profile. and i dont understand the moods... where is this? otherwise, cool
  • KEVIN RULES!
  • The upgrades are great BUT I want to feature AP on my website any chance of a button for people to click that would bring them to the front/home page and not me. A link line just doesn't stand out and AP deserves to stand out.

I've recommended they do this in the past, but so far nothing's come of it. Some standard size and nicely styled buttons would be good.

      In pixels:

      50x50

      100x35

Have not use the draft section yet, but will check it out. I too have lots poems and this will help solve that problem. Keep making this site better - always something new! Thanks.
  • Kevin! Drafts?!?! This is an AWESOME FEATURE! There have been MANY times that I have been writing a poem and for whatever accidental reason I hit a wrong button and Bam! Its ALL GONE!!!! At that point I give up and don't re-write it! Thank you so much! You've Made My Day!
  • One last thing, to close on a positive note.

I do enjoy the idea of a draft feature because it really enhances the POETRY portion of the site.
  • moods

I was indifferent towards this feature when it first began, but now it seems a little redundant.
It didn't bother me that much when it just appeared in the online box, but now my notes clutter with these things. My notes used to feature things that had to do with POETRY, such as rating a comment, commenting on a poem, new columns, and new contests. If you feel that compelled to be in a horrible or happy mood then I believe there's a simple solution.
WRITE A POEM reflecting this emotion and feeling. You can't have allpoetry and myspace together on the same site. I have to agree with a few other comments namely, keep it simple, and no more psychotherapy.
If you want to leave the mood feauture in existance, then at least limit it to the online box, or make it much like the other author information on the author page, STRICTLY LIMITED. If I was that curious to know how someone was doing, I could send them a message.
Forgive me if I come across as snide, but poetry is something I hold near and dear and I want to ensure that it's the primary goal of the site, and also the primary goal for adjustments.
It seemed like a good idea initially, but honestly it's becoming redundant. Let's stick to the meat as opposed to the bread of the sandwich.
Thanks, BC, someone who loves to promote the positivity of the site.
  • oh, and the "show poetry" link on author pages

    they're being naughty, as well.
i have a long bio, half of which is purely fictional, and i hit the "show poetry" link to skip all of that...
    and nothing happens anymore.
  • the drop-down links and post comments

what happened to the drop down links on the navigations at the top of the page?
and when i post a reply to someone in a topic in a group, it doesn't do the cool drop down box thing anymore like it used to, which i think was so convenient.
is there any way that they could come back?!

    notes....

that is the only thing I am concerend about, with groups ,being a greeter, I liked the timestamps as to when the note hit the system. if that can be fixed, it would be great. but now it is a general today. and over so many hours. but nothing as far as exact time.messages are still stamped as far as I can tell. so can we put that one back with the notes!
    PLEASE!!...

    thanks

Wow, I see quite a few of the things users suggested here. I really like the drafts, though I usually write on my computer and just save revised version. It sounds useful. And I love the Visitor Book - way better than a wall One thing I noticed is I get multiple notes for the same mood change, but I can live with that

drafts - fantastic, will have to use them a bit to see about how they work and if it fits me but has always been needed.
Still don't like the notes, but with the time today's notes were made I can live with it
Moods total waste of time and space please consider a gold member option to totally ignore them.
Don't care about the chatterbox have it turned off
Not really in favour of the contest limit, how about only one contest from a member showing in the box at a time?
The how long active in the favourites lists is great but the comment about moods still applies!
Can't see an advanced box for browsing notes, can anyone enlighten me?

So many changes I'm getting CONFUSED! some of them like.. The contest thing I don't really like but thats just me.Lol. Maybe if we had like, a timed thing for the contest like you an only have 3 for the first like five hours of the day or soemthing? I mean there are some people like my sis KiwiJacks who has really good contests and they fill up really fast!.. I would hate to see her limited to only 3 per day..

But yeah thats just my thought I guess....

Shouldn't people be glad to have the opportunity to win our hard earned and - in many cases - long saved up points? I think if someone wants to post 100 contests in a day, let them. It's their points and that's at least 100 people that will be happy when they win them.

I don't really care either way, but just making these points.

I agree. I think this is a little dumb, especially for people who pay...

Maybe a limit on how many minutes between each, but... You know I didn't think many people were getting cut out of "front page time" anyway. Not like it matters to me that much anyway. I've only hosted more than three contests in a day once or twice.

On a positive note, it might make it easier to actually find a good contest to enter with less of them... Still, I never noticed that any one person was hosting more than a few at a time!!! So really... um... I don't get it.

  • Have to agree with Roseof Ireland, site is for poets and poetry not for psychotherapy. KISS - Keep it simple Sally!!!
  • I seriously hope you put the notes back to how they were; as a Greeter and active member of several groups I now am bloody confused how to read the damn notes, it looks horrible and I have spent the better part of an hour trying to read through them and figure out who I need to message and comment back

Quickie contests take place--quickly. Once the entrants are in, it's off the front page...so, limiting users to 3 contests a day or less seems a bit silly to me.

Most people don't post 3 contests a day unless they post 3 quickies...I really think that should be changed, or expand the front page to show more than 4 contests...maybe 6 or even 8?

The rest of the things are okay with me.

Most of these changes work well.
I think that the mood notification is a little excessive. I have seen people change them every 5 minutes and that makes the notes a little bit overbearing.

I also don't care for the posting of only three contests in a day. Considering the front page only shows 4 or 5 new contests at a time, what purpose does this truly serve? I post a lot of contests at times, and I have earned the points to do so. If I post three contests and Jenny Poet comes along and posts three, mine are gone from the front page anyway. Is this not why we have the feature and ability to browse new contests?

Keep up the good work Kevin.
  • Contests are now limited to posting 3 per day, so that everyone can share front-page contest space.

    Can some explain this one?
    • There were some members who would post multiple contests and they would end up taking up the front page (Both the site page and the contest page) and knocking other contests off the page before anyone got the chance to see them. The limit is a direct response to that concern.
  • I obviously do have too many favourites! lol
The mood/motto under favs is making my list way too long but I can't cut it down anymore as I like being really active on this site... wish there was an option to take this off! At least for Gold members as we pay for added benefits ...

Also would like the option to turn off the note when someone changes their mood.. I get way too many notes already!!

I'd also like to be able to post more contests if they flick off the front page quickly, which mine do as they fill REALLY quickly and close...

OK.. I'm done moaning now.. just, I'm one of the most active members on here and feel those who are as active should have their voices heard... so I speak on behalf of a few people here.

Still LOVE this site tho And Drafts is an awesome idea!!
