RIP Quickies

Quickie contests are dead as we knew them.

Edit: Now they changed the rule to 3 contests a day. Not that it makes much difference.
Back when I was far more active around here, I posted lots of quickies. They seemed to fill pretty fast. People enjoyed them. I enjoyed them. Well I don't post so many anymore. But others took up the call and I knew I could come here anytime I wanted and write for let's say 3 of Perfectimperfection's or 4 of Kwigirljacks'. It could make for a great night of entertainment. Well, it's not possible to do that anymore.

New rules state that we can only post two contests a day. I understand the reasoning behind this. But there are only a hand full(Well maybe a hand and a half) of people on this site that host quickies. Added to the fact that quickies aren't as popular as they once were.. I see what amounts to the death of an online poetic culture. There will be less quickies. The rule assures that. If you win a Pay It Forward.. you might not want to post it right away, so you can post the normal contests you had planned. That can only undermine people's willingness to Pay It Forward.

So I guess that's it. A phenomenon like what we once had here, can't be kept alive except by the people who are a part of it. But what can we do? In the end I suppose we just have to admit to ourselves that this place doesn't belong to us.

  • I had no idea of this until I logged on and saw this Mark... Your right - certainly very sad... Makes me think I too may just retract my paying membership. Why is it that freedom as we know it. shrivels more each day. The world is a big icky prune some times lol. Thanks for the info (AND it was cool to see me up there - awww someone notices )!

Hmmmmm just logging on here and reading about this now. This might be the thing that makes me leave the site or at the very least retract my gold membership. I'm paying my hard earned money to be here and things just keep getting more and more restrictive on what I can do here. From people complaining that poetry my be a little offensive and now this where I can't even hold all the contests I want to. I suppose I will wait it out a couple weeks and see what becomes of this and then get rid of gold if nothing's changed. Allpoetry is becoming less of a poetry site and more like a chat room it seems. Thanks for the thoughts and discussion bro.

Well bro ... lets just say that quickies are the best! I am really upset that they are making it hard for us. You know, I don't know about anything else, but I do know that quickies got my inspiration back to write. I mean. I had a serious case of writers block for a good month, and then when I finally took the chance and entered in a quickie just to see if I could get something, they were coming out one after another. It's addicting and it helps people especially when they are bored and even more so when they need something to take their mind off a very upsetting day! GIVE US OUR PRIVILEGES BACK! WE WEREN'T HURTING ANYONE!
  • Thank you for posting this column Mark. I wasn't aware of the changes to hosting contests.

It took me a while to get up the nerve to enter quickies and once I started I found that when I'm in the mood they can be such a God-send. In agreement with so many other comments...they do enhance your writing skills. I, for one, have learned to cut out the extraneous words from a lot of my writing.

I guess if those of us who are able host 3 contests a day there will be closer competition to grab a spot and those who enjoy writing quickies can still have their daily 'fix'

    Take care honey

    Love Margaret

    Um

the problem with poets on this site is that, they are all about love poetry, and so much of life aspects, but never focussed on certain things like the quickie, now if seperating these links and buttons will help, than I am all for quickies though I suck, I will try to step up my games, Good point and hope it will get fix.

  • I never got into the quickies until about 6 months after everyone else did... But they were fun! I sucked at them at first, but I worked on being concise, and now it's amazing what I can say in 10 words!

I agree with whoever suggested the quickie-button... Clicky-clicky, get a quickie

Random, I know... It's been a loooooong day!
  • urgh to me that's ridiculous.
why should it matter in the first place if there is a lot of contests? Really, it's more variety.
Anyway yeah good luck with this one bro
  • I just posted a quickie hehe if anyone is interested w00t
  • Solution!
Why not a page for prewrites and a seperate page for quickies.
    There problem solve! Right?

      Yeah that's an idea.

Elsewhere in these comments I suggested having a separate Quickie section on this website.
      • Has anyone suggested this to Managment? We know they are smart people, if we can figure out a solution to satisfy everyone then they can too.
I do not have alot of money and still try to pay for my membership. I like alot here would love to get what i payed for.
I will say this, I love this site and mostly i have always seen them be fair...so lets see what happens.

I personally liked the quickies because they were inspirational. It was like a rush of thoughts that had to be poured out in a big fire hurry. It has been so much fun and everyone would comment on the others poems too. It almost felt like a party of sorts. Some of the prompt were a little too naughty but that made it fun and daring.

But on the other hand, I can see how some poets may feel the quality of the poetry was not as good due to no time to edit and ponder. I have seen some poems that were not well designed but then some cannot do well in a hurry. I think they know that and do not enter quickies.

I found the quickies to be more like a social event at times and made a long night go faster. Sooo LIVE ON with the quickies.

Yeppers. I have been amazed so many times by genius and boldness people will pen when the clock is ticking. Stuff that would never see the light of day otherwise.
      • I so agree! Some of my best writes was because i was timed!
Matter of fact i just was told i did one of my best write on the last poem i did because i had a time limit.
Plus i am awake sometimes and it does help us nocturnal people!

  • people get more idiotic everyday. what can you do? justdon't join them

      Nice eye
      • it's only true. Or so I see. I guess we overreact on the subject of life and get carried away. The normal depression brings you back to reality - and then you see what's going wrong but can't do anything about it except rant. Like me at the moment.

Anyway, I'm gonna get some sleep - had a tough day

  • Sigh 's all around
  • Here is the response to my question about 1) contests and 2) getting notices everytime someone changes their mood grr

    ---------------[ticket 69097] Hi
I'm sorry but there is no option to turn the mood notifications off at this time. Since the changes were just done today normally the site owner leaves them up a few days and then does a poll regarding them. At that time he generally goes with the majority rules.

As for the contests, they are now beign limited to 3 per day being posted. This was done since we've had a lot of complaints on the issue. It was set at 2, but he has changed it to 3 per day now.

The thing about any group of hundreds is that a lot of people could complain about almost anything. I for one don't want to spend all my time complaining. So I guess I will just get rained on. lol
  • Why? I love the contest they teach me how to write better by having to use my imagination. Also i learn and practice different ways of poetry. For beginners its a great way to start.
If it were not for the Quickie contest i could not excercise my brain.
As a paying member are we not the consumers.
I think a poll should be taken, like they do on everything else.
I owe a PIF but am tring to find something great to do it with that takes alttle time.
I really think we should have a say in this.
  • I agree with Jackie, but I didn't know this until just now..I guess I should pay more attention. This is really sad.

      Yeah it is lame.
Suddenly that 14.95 a month buys you a lot less too.

  • It never did belong to us, did it? so much for freedom of speech.. its all blah blah blah..
I too understand the reasons behind this also.

    s for you

    Agreed.
    I miss quickies too!
I think that we should have alot more quickies than prewrites. Just my opinion!
  • I'm gonna send a note asking that actually!

      Another thing they could do...
Separate quickies from regular contests. Have a quickie button up there so, people that want to have quickie fun can post there and not even be listed with the regular contests. Plus that would promote quickies.

      Good thinking.

  • I'm so sad!!!

I wonder if the contests fill and then close so they are off the main page if that allows us to post more than 2??? We should ask about that, cause that's their main concern.. too many taking up the front page!!

No, it doesn't belong to us... but I think our opinions should count.. and those of us who are the most active on this site should be given consideration I feel!!!!

I agree bro.. it's like the end of an era now!
