project poetry season one [fifth round]

Hii everyone.

If you haven’t been able to tell, we will be cutting out on group work. Sure, you might get something, but for the most part, I think you all are on your own.

This round might seem… weird. Oh well. You will get over it or get eliminated.

I was laying in my bedroom, putting off cleaning said room & I was thinking about what I could do as a prompt for you guys. I got up & started organizing my drawers [yes, when I clean, I really dig deep] & came across my box of school things: 7 activities letters, tons of bars, 4 all state medals, blah blah blah. & then I found some pictures. I put it all away, in a bit of an order & called it good. I went back to my bed & let my mind wonder & then this idea hit me.

I want a photo poem.

Now, I don’t mean like, a collage. To be specific, I want a series of pictures to tell a story, a concept, a whatever. You’re the poet. Poetry is like photography. We link images to make an expression. Do the same here. For an example, think of a ransom note, where they cut out all of the words from magazines to make the one message. Do that with the pictures, but not in the exact same manner, obviously.

There are some rules & guidelines that obviously need to be set out here. You cannot use a photoset that someone has already made. That’s plagiarism. You can use photographs from anywhere though. AP won’t like it if you use porn, so I guess that’s off limits, though I don’t think I’d really mind. HAHA

Also, you may photograph your own set if you wish. Yes, you may get creative behind the camera.

There is no limit as to how many frames it needs to be. I have been debating with myself as to if I should give you all a picture to start with, but no. You can take care of your own. If you can’t pick one, take a picture of yourself. Or me. I don’t care. Just start somewhere & let this take you.

With that being said though, your series needs to be cohesive, original & potent. You may title each picture, but no titles that are an obvious attempt to write a freaking stanza of poetry. Yes, you know what I’m talking about.

I’m sure there will be many questions, for the fact I haven’t even done this myself, so I don’t even know what to expect. OH! & please, I’m kind of not looking for cartoony images, but eh. Use your own judgment.

Along with this series, I would like an explanation of each photo & how it relates to this story or idea. I will not look at it before I judge. These should stand alone. It’s more of a double-checking device for me, to make sure I’m getting the right meaninh & a base for me to see if what you were going for worked.

Finally, since I don’t know how well this is going to go, you need to write me a poem simply inspired by one of the photos in your set. It doesn’t have to be about the set at all. Just be inspired. Woo.

So recap: Photoset, explaination & one poem, picture inspired by a single photo from that set will be due.

I will be setting the due date as Tuesday, June 10th at 11:59PM like always.

Any questions, comment the column & such.

Good luck guys. xD

-Chase

  • the slideshow is still, off-and-on, being stupid. so I gave instructions for the slideshow, and another way to see them all correctly if they're skipping every 2nd picture like they are for me right now. *sighs*

though, without further ado, here's my photoset:

okay, so do we paste all the pictures together into one (not really a collage, but a string), or do we just give you each individual link to the pictures?

love the idea, by the way. I love pictures.

You just need to follow what the assignment asks. Presentation is pretty much up to the poet.

    hmm..this should be interesting
    questions:
so the idea is we take you through a stream of photos trying to convey an idea or feeling?
should that ultimate goal be shown in the title of the poem?
if we do title the pictures, will you be including that in your judging?

    or

should I just stop badgering and take the info you gave us and run with it and be creative?

You use the "chain" of photos toconvery an idea or a story, just for the fact that it is so easy just to post a bunch of pictures of starving children & be like "sadness." I want this to go outside of the box.

The title is up to you. I will not be impressed with a title that says "End World Hunger." That doesn't take creativity. That's obvious.

If you title pictures, it will be an aspect of my judging, yes.

& I think you can incorporate that last statement quite nicely in with the rest I told you. :]
    • haha
  • fuck.
  • This is very cool

Thanks. I was worried how this would go over. xD
      • i think it's brilliant.

i might be getting gold membership -- just for this round's poem. i just think it would be better to have the pictures right there on the poem rather than to like...have links to photobucket. that'd be kind of corny.

Either way, it'll be appreciated the same? But gold would be amazing for this round, mhm.
          • yeah, i know what you mean. it's just a personal preference.
plus, i want gold membership to host TI9 anyway, which you should enter.
  • *claims first question*

can there be words in our pictures?

yes, as accents, but it had better not be the base of the photo. Use your own judgment. & I had better not see some tacky photoeditting of words into a picture either.
      • mmk. so as accents, yes; taking a picture of a handwritten note, for example, no.

Ugh. That's so hard because it can be used poetically. Um... oh my god, this is hard. Yes, you can have words, but the words cannot be in the form of poetry or prose, as in just taking a picture of a poem & calling it good?

Use your good judgment. Seriously. xD
