Member Of The Month Is :
Congrats !!!
1. Where did you grow up?
Everyplace I ever lived. I grow up a little bit every day. I’ve lived in Minneapolis, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Albuquerque, Odessa (Texas) and about a dozen other towns, suburbs and cities.
2.What is the first thing you remember that perked your interest in writing?
It probably sounds like something you would expect a teacher to say, but my answer is, truthfully: reading. I remember, at a very young age, wanting to be the person who writes the stories, the songs, even the TV shows and movies.
3. Did you go to college/university?
Yes. I have a B.A. in English (Writing) from Loyola Marymount University. I am currently nearing the end of my coursework for a M.A. in Elementary Education
4. If so, what was your major?
See above.
5. Outside of college, how have you educated yourself beyond secondary school?
I am one of those cursed people you see walking into things because they forget to stop reading whatever is within reach to read. This voraciousness is well documented by my family – from a very early age.
6. What’s your favorite color?
At the moment, it is salmon. Now it is hunter green. Chocolate. Yeah, that’s it. Salmon.
7. Food?
Real, Sonoran-style Mexican food
8. Pastime?
AllPoetry, gardening (lately), remodeling (reluctantly), and never enough guitar or basketball.
9. Music?
I am an old rock and roller and I like anything that respects rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and jazz.
10. Poet ?
Richard Brautigan has always been my favorite poet to read (and what else is there?) William Blake is my favorite of his time. And my favorite poem was written by Kenneth Patchen.
A Link to Scott's favorite poem (by Kenneth Patchen)
11. TV show?
Tenspeed and Brownshoes (Google that one, trivia buffs)
12. Movie ?
Slingblade
13. Book ?
From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz
About Your Life On All Poetry
1. Give me a brief rundown of your history on AP. In other words, how did you get here?
I arrived by accident very near the beginning of AllPoetry (October 2001). I’m pretty sure I just searched for poetry sites and stumbled in. I posted fifteen poems and then pretty much forgot about the place for about 6 months. My involvement pretty much exploded from that point on.
2. How long have you been a member of All Poetry?
I keep answering questions before you get to them.
About Your Poetry :
1. When did you first begin to write?
The first poem I wrote down was in 2nd grade. I first felt like I was writing sometime in college.
2. What kind of poetry do you write the most? Dark, Sensual, Etc.
I suppose I write a few consistent things. I write a lot of love poetry (and why not? Everyone can relate). Lately, I have tended toward writing stories and character studies. I’m trying to use some of the images I carry around, some memories, and a lot of pure fiction to create people and sketch their lives.
Once in a while, I almost get it.
3. Who are your influences?
Way too numerous to mention, I think. The Table of Contents from any Survey of English Literature is a good starting place. Throw in a sprinkling of the Beat Poets, a handful of songwriters, and a solid dose of AllPoetry on every level.
4. What feeds your desire to continue writing poetry ?
It is what I do. Sometimes I seem to succeed.
General :
1. Hobbies?
Guitar and basketball
2. Pets?
A dog. Molly. Spoiled.
3. Talents?
I suppose.
4. Jobs?
Too numerous to name. Last job: Flight Attendant
5. What advice would you give to growing poets ?
Read. You will hear it a million times and for a very good reason: it is the best advice you can get. Read everything: poetry, fiction, cereal boxes, newspapers.
6. Anything else you can think of.
Live. The best thing a writer can do is live life, experience the good and the bad, then write about it from the perspective of someone who really knows.
