Sei du selbst

A poem written by Tino Müller, my twelve year old brother.

(I had posted this before as a poem, but after seeing the discussion on the policy board, I decided to put this into a column. Sorry to everyone who already commented on this poem. I have your comments saved on my computer, my brother appreciates your encouraging words... )
Sei du selbst

Sei du selbst,
mach, was dir gefällt.
Gibt nicht Acht,
ob es den anderen gefällt.

Sei du selbst,
es ist dein Leben,
es nützt dir nichts, wenn
du selbst nicht glücklich bist.

Sei du selbst,
halt an deinen Wünschen,
halt an deinen Zielen und Träumen fest,
vielleicht werden sie wahr.

Sei du selbst,
steh zu deiner Meinung,
lass sie nicht verbiegen,
es ist deine Meinung.

do what you like.
do not pay attention
to whether the others like it.

Be yourself,
it is your life,
not being happy is
of no use for you.

Be yourself,
hold on to your wishes,
hold on to your aims and dreams,
maybe they will come true.

Be yourself,
stick to your opinion,
always remain true to yourself,
it is your opinion.

    Na, wirklich toll! Ein einfaches Lesen, sonst ganz tief. Ich gratuliere ihm! Die Lehrerin könnte es mittelmäßig finden, aber er ist wirlich klass. Dieses Gedicht ist deiner Bruder gelungen.

      It was a German assignment... so he was kinda forced to write something... Aber seine Lehrerin fand es nur so mittelmäßig...

      Na ja, ich halt momentan eh ncht so viel von Schule... Kennst du zufällig "Andorra" von Max Frisch? Das lesen wir grade... Und in English gucken wir grade "Truman Show" und in Religion "Harold and Maude"...
      Und ich komm mir so blöd vor, ich versteh bei Truman Show nur die Hälfte von dem, was die sagen...
