I care for a few older Scots here in Australia and they revere this man immensely. Though they have either lived in Australia for many, many years or were born here to Scottish Parents, or have Scottish Ancestors, Burns seems to be a symbol to them of their homeland or roots. I see a particular picture of this man every day and today is really the only day I might give him any thought, yet people in many countries celebrate him. The Power of the man and his poetry is awesome.

Oh the great Rabbie, or Robin as he often signed himself. He is a phenomenon to rival Shakespear. Although, like Shakespeare, he leaned heavily on the work of earlier writers he did indeed write some beautiful poems; a few of which you have highlighted here. However I am sure he would have been astounded by his own lasting memory were he indeed still around at age 249.
I shall no doubt drop in on a "burn's night" celebration and I have just bought my haggis, tatties and neaps to be ready for the supper. No wee dram however.
I have spent many happy hours reading the works of this complex character and also in listening to them as countless musicians have put their own tunes to his wonderful words.
I have tramped around his native Ayrshire seeking inspiration. I have even performed his work myself and translated a few standards from the dialect into modern English.
Thanks for this tribute to a great Scot.

wow, I never realized he was so young when he died. One thing I admire about Burns was how he collected and preserved many folk songs by submitting them to the library. One of my favorite contest entries was a letter written by (the voice of) Burns to another old poet but unfortunately it was removed from the contest and can't be located now.

The best laid plans of mice and men/gang aft agley.

Ode to a field mouse -- sticks in my mind because my mom used to quote it all the time.

I'll take a better look at the links later. Happy birthday, Rabbie. Hope he is having haggis in Heaven.
