Member Of The Month For Jan. 2008 #5

Come see the first one for the new year..

Member of The Month for Jan. Is

MargaretG

Congrats !!!

1. Where did you grow up? I grew up in several parts of Canada, because my father's career made us move. We stayed the longest in Northern Ontario, and the terrain there still means home to me.

2.What is the first thing you remember that perked your interest in writing?
I was a great reader as a child and teenager: Jack London, C.S. Lewis, lots of SciFi and fantasy. I wrote a few poems then, but never showed them to anyone.

3. Did you go to college/university?
Yes.

4. If so, what was your major?
Biology and chemistry. I took a diploma in medical laboratory science and worked in a pathology lab for 8 years.

5. Outside of college, how have you educated yourself beyond secondary school?
I took evening courses in editing, and I have read widely. Almost all of my pursuit in literature (English and Russian) has been on my own or in book clubs.

6. What’s your favorite color?
green

7. Food?
Italian

8. Pastime?
reading

9. Music?
Baroque and classical.

10. Poet ?
Anna Akhmatova (in translation, my Russian is not that good.)

11. TV show?
Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, with my guys

12. Movie ?
Truly, Madly, Deeply

13. Book ?
anything by Jane Austen

About Your Life On All Poetry

1. Give me a brief rundown of your history on AP. In other words, how did you get here?
A friend encouraged me to check out AP, and the response to my first few poems (gold in the newcomers' contest) was so positive, I decided to stay. The various poetry forms proved so fascinating that I have written more than 500 poems. Last year I sorted through and removed a lot of ephemera and poems which were less interesting after time had passed. Now I have 185 poems online and 235 trophies on the whole opus.

2. How long have you been a member of All Poetry?
since March 29, 2004, almost 4 years.

About Your Poetry :

1. When did you first begin to write?

I came to writing through editing. I started with the technical manuals in the laboratory, then took over a church newsletter when they needed help. When there was need, I would write it. I turned to poetry for self expression, when I needed to sort out my thinking in a period of change and conflict.

2. What kind of poetry do you write the most?
I have gone through several stages already, the spiritual/angst is mostly done, I think. I write mostly rhymes and forms. I know it is anachronistic, but I like it.

3. Who are your influences?
William Shakespeare, George Herbert, Kahlil Gibran

4. What feeds your desire to continue writing poetry ?
I need a lot of practice if I am ever to be good at it.

General :

1. Hobbies?

I am studying Ukrainian language and literature, I do fundraising for charity, and I am supervisor on the steering committee of the international women's club here. I enjoyed singing in a choir until our last move; I have not joined a choir here because of time pressure.

2. Pets?
I had cats and dogs, hamsters and turtles as a child - now because we move so often, we don't keep animals.

3. Talents?
Singing

4. Jobs?
I have been a medical lab technologist, newsletter editor, copy writer, also wife (since 1980) and mother (since 1991).

5. What advice would you give to growing poets ?
Find what you like to do and stick to it. Many times you will not be popular, but remember that popularity is not always a good measure of quality. Listen to other people but do not believe them 100%. Do not put too much stock in success; when your taste changes you will hate all your previous work, whether others liked it or not. Don't spend all your time writing - get out and have experiences to write about. Go lightly, treat yourself and others kindly.

6. Anything else you can think of.
I wish to express gratitude to my friends and teachers, especially the ones who saw a spark of talent in a beginner and pointed out where I could improve, in particular Del Warren Livingston, Hugh Wyles and Maatkara.

New Thoughts For The New Year

© Margaret I. Gibson, All rights reserved

To sum it up, the world is in a state,
as cads, assassins, hoodlums celebrate,
as war and pestilence are riding down
and presidents consider donning crowns,
with multitudes beset by many trials -
where in the world is rationale for smiles?

Consider, if you will, the total loss
if hope is gone, and tragedy is boss,
if kindness and its thanks are put aside,
if friendliness and courage only hide.

Then can't we give ourselves a cheerful grin,
and help ensure that everyone can win?
Forget the days when one was not enough
to change the world - we All are of One stuff!
We work and share already, let's increase
the circle of our love, and harvest peace.

I'm so happy I looked on your page tonight and found this. Congratulations!!!!! In my opinion, no one deserves this more than you, Margaret.

It is the good fortune of those who know you that you've been here four years. It's been wonderful for me to know you, to read your marvelous work and to listen to your wisdom. I wish I had known your advice to growing poets. I believe I did everything wrong. I do now look back at my work and ask what the trophies are all for, therefore I must now figure out what my new love is.

You are the wisest lady I've had the pleasure and honor to meet on AP, and I just wanted you to know. Hugs, Patricia

    So happy for you, MargaretG!

I used to run a membership spotlight each month in our Writers' Centre newsletter, and it really helped to integrate our members I feel ~ helping them to see beyond the usual patois into the person behind the writing.

It has been a pleasure getting to know you, dear Poet. Thank you for sharing. ~ And congratulations, too ...!

This is such a great idea to maybe let us members here read work by other poets that we may have never come across in our travels around AP. It gives us a great insight into their character and life whilst also giving great advice to many. I really enjoyed reading this interview plus the poem which accompanied it. Can't wait now to go off and read some more of this very talented ladies work.

It is nice to see such a nice person being recognised. Margaret, you have a gentle soul who has drifted in and out of my days here at AP and for that I am ever grateful. The support and kindness that you exude is a delight especially to newcomers and those of us who lack the finesse of punctuation Many congratulations Kari on your fine choice for this months "Member of the Month " award.

That's funny because I sent you the link to this poem of Margaret's for you to consider for the second AP anthology along with a list of some other choice poems:
http://allpoetry.com/poem/2485243 It makes me wonder now if you didn't get that but I would be happy to resend it.

As for you, Margaret - Congratulations and thank you to Kari for highlighting you in this way. You are one of the most insightful commenters I have ever encountered and I will always have a soft spot for discovering George Herbert's "wreath" through your work. It has been most interesting to explore some forms like the sonnet here at AP with your help. I look forward to seeing some work from you about your home of the moment- the Ukraine.

    Dear Margaret

When I read your little biography I wondered if you knew Vera in London. I checked, and you do!
If I'm not mistaken, you'd been under the weather lately, am I right?
A lot of good vibrations were going through this site when you were, why, with everyone hurrying to send regards and get-wells.
I believe Kevin even remarked that if you DIDN'T get well soon, he was going to have to add more memory to the central board to accommodate well-wishers!

Well, you've digested a lot more poetry and its environs than I'm going to ever do, so I'll just say congratulations to you on this delightful consideration of the AP staff.

    Best regards,
    John-Las Vegas, Nevada

I had the pleasure of giving Vera dinner in my home, and she repaid us with wonderful stories of her travels.
      I hope to see soon.

Aw...MargaretG-what a perfect choice and great way to start off the new year. I've been out of touch with her (and most the poets here), but she has always been one that I admire. I consider her to be in a league of her own. Her writing reflects her faith and love for the Lord-which is always a drawing card for me. Congratulations!!!

    Well done, Kari!

Margaret has been a favorite poet of mine from the first time we met on AP in 2004. I'm honored to be included with such exemplary poets of form in her reference to "friends and teachers", but I feel Margaret has taught me much more - her influence and extraordinary poetic skills were responsible for my writing a sonnet for the first time! (Quite a departure for me, being more accustomed to occasional rhymes and haiku).

I can highly recommend Margaret's fine work to anyone interested in excellent examples of the sonnet forms or simply for her effortless style, impeccable literacy and wise insights in any form.
