I'm often seriously not impressed with the winners of contests actually, but you have to get out there and try. Everyone's tastes are different.

To be completly honest, the people on AP that have loads and loads of trophies are usually some of the least impressive in my oppinion. Weird, but true. Trophies mean nothing.

    Yo, like dude -

It's not just different poets having different strengths, it is also different readers having different tastes.

If you have or should you ever submit your work to publishers, it is wise to see examples of poetry they have already accepted. Check out the winners of a judge's past contests. Are they similar to your work? If they are all free verse, don't submit rhymed metered poems. If they are dark, don't submit something funny. If it's someone who has always admired your work, enter anything.

There is also an element of reputation. Ted Kooser said he had as many rejections as the next guy until he was appointed United States Poet Laureate then he could write anything on a napkin and get it published.

If it's possible, run or enter a contest where the judge can't see the name of the poet. Be honest, if you ran a contest and saw that one of the entrants was Arkbear, Cletic Mom, GranniEri, Laura Lamarca, Griswald, or Riftkin - wouldn't you read their poem with a little prejudgement like 'this will be good'?

Anyway enter the dang contests. At least you'll get read.

Just don't enter any contests you see I've already entered --

    I don't need the competition.

Hey, how come I'm not up there- LOL!
I used to feel that way about Sheltered. Whenever I entered one of Arkbear's contest I'd end up right behind Sheltered. It happened 3 times in a row.

Different poets have different strengths. I seem to do well with humor and prayer, for example.

I was just considering puting you and Ashley up on the list
and I don't like the disappointment of getting contest results back to find that I haven't won squat.
