* volta (pivot) in line 9
* written in iambic pentameter
* rhyme scheme abbaabba cdecde

The Blessings Of Oneness (Petrarchan Sonnet)

When people say “I love you”, is it true ?
What kind of love resides within a soul,
when hatred soon appears to play its role ?
Love-hatred is a quite explosive brew …
The flowers of the seeds that once we grew,
through anger’s flame have turned into black coal.
The vapour of regret does not console,
nor build the ruins of our love anew.

Yet there’s a secret salve to soothe such pain :
the balm of unconditioned love and peace,
which knows no hatred, sorrow, fear or wrath,
forever free from envy’s mortal chain.
In Union, thoughts of separation cease -
when two are one, they walk a single path …

OUTLINE OF MY FRENCH SONNET :

FORM :
* French Sonnet – 14 lines
* divided into 2 quatrains, 1 couplet and a quatrain
* volta (pivot) in line 9
* written in iambic hexameter (alexandrines)
* rhyme scheme abba abba cc dede

The Blessings Of Oneness (French Sonnet)

When people speak of love, what is it they pursue ?
What is this kind of love that dwells within a soul,
when hatred soon appears to play its fatal role ?
For love well mixed with hate creates a mortal brew.

The flowers of the seeds that once with love we grew,
through anger’s flame have turned into polluting coal.
The vapour of regret can not sad heart console,
nor ruins of our sweet abode of love renew.

Yet there’s a secret salve for soothing such great pain,
which heals the grieving heart from envy’s mortal chain :

The unconditioned love that leads your mind to peace
shall calm the wounds of grief and cool the burns of wrath,
In union, thoughts of fear and separation cease -
when two are truly one, they walk a single path …

The Blessings Of Oneness (French Sonnet With Caesuras)

Two people speak of love; what is it they pursue ?
What is this kind of love ? What dwells within a soul ?
And hatred soon appears; it plays a fatal role.
We mix the love with hate; this is a mortal brew.

We planted many seeds; wild flowers once we grew.
But angers flames destroyed; the blossoms turned to coal.
Regret is futile smoke; sad hearts it can’t console.
To ruin turned our love; dead wood will not renew.

Yet there’s a secret salve; this balm will soothe your pain.
It heals the grieving hearts; it frees from envy’s chain :

It’s unconditioned Love; it leads the mind to peace.
It calms the wounds of grief; it cools the burns of wrath.
In union, fear dissolves; and thoughts of anguish cease.
Two souls for oneness search; they walk a single path.

    Have bookmarked this for easy access - have only written one or two sonnets - English I think, but this makes it so easy to see exactly what each form is all about. Thanks very much for writing this.

      how kind of you to stop by, erika ...

      I have been inspired to explore several sonnet-forms by mamad's excellent sonnet-class on ap and her multiround-contest on the same subject ... I feel that this form resonates deeply within me, and I am happy to have been guided and instructed so professionally by this wonderful teacher ...
      all the merits go to her ...
