I have seen it all over the place and hadn't a clue of what it is or what it means. I get questions often on what it is just like what is Emo. So I decided to google it and I found it in Urban Dictionary and... way cool is this fact that Allpoetry is mentioned in the definition of it.
So this is what Dirty Pretty is

A style of poetry that is written deep from within the soul. Mostly known for its sporadic punctuation & shown through metaphors of eating disorders, and Selling yourself. Whether it be body or soul. Dirrty Pretty, is more of a passion lived by its writers, the few that actual know how to write it. This form is now becoming a trend and is being over used. Many people are attempting to write & they fail miserably. If you cant breath it, don't write it.Its roots are linked To allpoetry where it is now been mainstremed though a few only know how.

Good column. I had thought of it in what I call "cutty sark"; edgy stuff with an acceptable amount of lovely words about dark subjects and purposeful misspells that fog its less than pretty side.
Reminds me of captioning a face like this:
while answering the question:
"Why are you hitting your head so hard and smiling"
..Answer:
"Because it feels so gooooooood when it stops".
EwhhhhhhhhhHHhhhhh.
Lambasting, curdling milk, looking through the eyes of a possible criminal. You know. Like Lizzy Borden. We never found out if she did it or not.
Or did we?? . Pretty face, ugly act.

I still don't get what it is except that your heart needs to be in it. Which is just a description of poetry... maybe even of life. So is it anything seperate and what are its conventions if they're not unusual punctuation, dark metaphors etc?

From the dirty-pretty poems I've seen, they appear to depend as much on the layout of the poem itself to tell the story of the poem, as they do on its words. As in:

Regular poetry doesn't require the author to spend so much time aligning it so it will look right.
