The technical world calls this "threaded" comments, just in case you're wondering.
I know I considered changing this once before, and people were very opposed to it. However, I think the new threaded comments answer the problems brought up then.
One of the features of the upgrade is that comments that are "replied" to, now show up next to the comment they're in reply to.
I propose that since the comment 'conversation' is preserved with this, we show more recent comment at the top, just under the 'add comment' box. What do you think?

Kevin!!! I haven't been recieving ANY of my comments lately!!! whyyyyyyy!!!
-
I think it makes sense. That way if you have read all the comments, it is easy to see the newer ones without scrolling all the way to the bottom. (If your lucky to get that many)
I am for the idea myself.

i would prefer not to. i think it's a gr8 idea to have it optional though!
-
I honestly don't like it.. it would be reading them backwards, and makes no sense really..
-
I think it is an excellent idea, as I have lost the context of a message, because of a delay in the response. This way the context will be preserved.
-
It seems a logical way to go. easier and more convenient. Sounds great to me.

I like the idea of having the newest commentas right at the top..just makes it easier to see new comments than to scroll down.
-
Threaded is good, 'backwards' no.
Inserting replies under the comments addressed is great, but effectively reading them backwards, i.e. oldest from bottom up, just seems very counter intuitive.
I don't remember seeing any forum thread anywhere online where the latest comment on a topic is the first one right at the top of a thread. That would be really confusing. So, that means a reply to another comment would then be above it?
Most expect the oldest to newest to follow in descending order.. everyone is used to it as the most natural way things are read.

Maat has brought up some excellent points and I do agree with everything she has said.
Is there anyway you can do a screen shot on a beta version or somewhere for us please
If it is going to turn out like how Maat said..I don't think that would be a good idea. It would be confusing..
I just would really like a screen shot so I can see exactly what you mean..that would help out so much

I like this idea!

Might make life slightly easier. -
it seems to me it would be confusing-
i agree with Zara's take on the subject. -
Threaded is the best....... and yes, newest comments should be at the top of the entire thread. Just makes sense.
-
I like that idea.

Sure, go for it.

How difficult would it be to include an option to "show oldest first" that readers could click on. I still think that option makes the most logical sense. I've found the comments a bit confusing lately. If each comment could always stand on its own it wouldn't make a difference, but if I arrive on line to find ten comments on a poem and perhaps a couple of people have commented on the same thing and referred the others' comment for example, it makes much more sense to be chronological it also allows readers to follow if there have been edits and such more easily. I know threaded comments preserve some of the "conversations", but not everyone replies to another commenter when referring to what they have said, it may just be to the author. Oh well, I suppose in the grand scheme of things it isn't earth shattering. I suspect with the comments I see here I'd best get used to it.

I'm sure I've seen some comments showing by newest first around the site is it contests maybe?

Threaded comments are great.
And I very much like the idea of having newest comments first. Will save a bit of scrolling here and there.
-
Using threads and nested comments works extremely well for the layout of this site. Most recent comments absolutely should come first, I feel. It may not be a more logical progression, but once one is used to the setup, to me, it works much, much better.
-
Fresh first impressions are untarnashed and maybe the best. People tend to ,self included. Read at times leaving comments based on other's comments! Ya know? I if asked, choose leaving them as is.Thanks Suseann

I haven't seen it in practice yet myself so I suppose I should reserve judgement but it sounds like an excellent idea.

I like it!
I have noticed this change lately, and I found it quite helpful! It is nice to know that new comments are going to be read first, as opposed to being at the end of the page, or even shuffled to another page. There is certainly something to be said for -all- comments, but it is certainly convienient with this newer setup. My vote: Keep it! -
a voice for the other side
In the best scenarios, comments become discussions among readers and the poet. That would be difficult if the comments appeared in reverse order.
For those that have a lot of comments, the "end" key takes you to the bottom of the page in one stroke.
Maybe it would be possible to choose the order in which comments appear, as we can on contests ("sort by...").
Are there complaints about the current system? Why fix what ain't broke?

I agree with zara, as someone who is open to critique or suggestions, I would much prefer to be able to follow the progression of these conversations in chronological order. I do like the replies posted beneath the comment they pertain to but I think this still works well as it is.

Yep, I too like this idea.
-
I like it - it would save a lot of time scrolling down to th bottom of the page if the more recent comments were at the top.

thanks, but i'm facing a problem...
Thanks for that. It does help to follow.
However, I'm facing a problem. I don't know if it's relevant to the others as well... but recently I've been experiencing problems with commenting and replying to comments. When I press on "Submit Comment/Reply" it shows me that it's adding, and then WHOOSH! the comment disappears! It happens very often. When I retype and submit again, usually it gets added, but sometimes, it takes me 2 to 3 goes to post it up.
Is that a glitch with the server or what?
Please help me out!
Thanks.

I go with you Kevin...
It's a nice idea..even we feel often tired of searching for the recent comment scrolling down for long time....

I like the threaded comments but I think the order the original comments are in should remain oldest first on the poems, simply because sometimes some of the comments will refer to prior comments made and having it newest first may cause some cronological confusion if you are not paying attention.
I do like the way the comment 'conversations' are grouped in the threaded structure, it makes it easier to follow than the old method. -
I like the idea, if I am understanding it correctly I think it would be alot better than the newest comments on the bottom.

i think it's a good idea, but i'm not sure everyone will think so, so perhaps it can be optional...?
-
It's a great idea to be underneath the comment box

I think that it's worth a try... it's certainly a good idea...

Yes
I am very familiar with the threaded conversations, as I use this in my online college courses. It makes for a much easier progression in the conversations. Thanks for this. -
That sounds like a pretty good idea. I think that you should keep it that way.

I think this would be a neat idea..would this go for comments on contests as well ??
