Music from the monotonic collections is kind of like early techno. I've gone through their large collection and removed anything that's tooo wild.
I've also found some more public domain music, with soft lyrics, that I might include as well.
What do you think? Are you going to be horribly hurt that you can't use your favorite song?
As mentioned previously, music will default to off, but there will be an easy link to make it always start. It'll be a silver feature at first, but may become free eventually, we'll see. Hopefully in a few weeks we'll have a beta (test) version up.
One of the additions to the site I'm currently working on is the ability to add music to your poems. Unfortunately, it's complicated because we're considered a 'commercial' use - so to get your favorite Justin Timberlake song we'd have to pay them several thousand a year - per poem
I've done a lot of research, and come up with some creative commons licensed music that we're allowed to host and use. It's got a nice background feel and some good melodies, and is from a label called 'monotonic'.

Sound
Hey Kevin, I tried the sound out with a dark poem last night, had a tough time getting the right song to play though. Oh, but when I did, I LOVED it! A whole new sense comes into play, it was way cool! I finally got the right song to play and I featured the poem, only to have another song playing when I opened it again? Then out of the blue it said I needed "Flashplayer." From that point on it wouldn't work? Now I want to use it, I know all the bugs aren't worked out so I am not expecting instant perfection, just want to know why it worked for awhile then needed Flashplayer? Obviously it worked with what I had in the beginning. Thanks, it is a great new feature. I suggest people try it and test out some of the music, depending on which song compliments your write. Believe me it seriously does, I was also a skeptic and the thought of music playing on all the poems made me cringe, but after I applied the right music to my work it was amazing, it took on a theatrical effect and the music seemed to change in the right places almost magically. Just give it a try, it isn't perfect yet, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

I think it would be great if we could post our own sound files. I know the html to put background sound in, but it doesn't work here. If you were to just enable the ability for members to add their own sound file then you wouldn't have to be responsible for whats used. You could just add a disclaimer about it. IMHO

I don't think you need to worry about the copyright issue for people who on their own include copyrighted material- it is their risk alone... (but then shyster lawyers do go for whoever has the money!) (but then they’re shyster lawyers and should be easily beatable…
I already incorporate music into my work, but it is original so there are no copyright issues, right now I upload it to my own Internet storage space and link to it from here... now the music you're describing sounds like elevator music! but I suppose that statistically speaking some people will put it to good use every now and then, just like backgrounds and animations... as for using copyrighted material, it does add a certain prestige to the poem if the graphics/music artist has given knowledgeable consent for the use of their piece... for me here on AP I'd get them to pay me a fee for giving their work exposure to my 5-10 readers that comprise my readership here, after all, look at all the business I'm sending their way!

i would love it

Adding music to poetry is good idea
-
-
slipknot??

-
It would be nice to have the option to add music,it would also be nice to have the option of reading the piece without listening to the music as it just may detract from a piece in the same way that sometimes the flashing backgrounds do.
I would love to have the added facility of listening to poets read their work on ap too
-
On freewebs.com they have music files that sound like ringtones that are free to use- they aren't exact copies of the song. Is that what these are going to be? And who are they going to be available too?
-
i was thinking. Will there be music to reflect each genre of poetry?
-
Cool!
That's sounds awesome! I don't think it should be popular songs anyways. It's background, not the spotlight. A very good idea. I'd buy a silver membership if I could afford it just for that feature!
~Chelsey~ -
Interesting idea, but one I doubt I'll use...unless maybe on a contest.
I usually cringe when I go to a site that has music playing...makes the computer slow, and all that. A default of off would be wonderful.
This sounds like a good idea for consideration at Storywrite, too.... certain areas of stories could benefit from certain songs... sort of a soundtrack to a novel. -
Great Idea
I really like the idea of playing the fav music with the poem and i do realise the formalities and difficulties of the copyright acts... but perhaps I suggest if you can put jsut a cliiping of a few seconds like its done on myspace or may be still use just the instrumental aspect of the same song which I consider every song does and can have maybe this might just work..
-
I think it might make some poems seem corny. But I could be wrong. We'll see.
-
Super addition
-
I'll be looking forward to it!
Any music is better than none.
-
Sounds fun! I am looking forward to it.
-
I think its a nice idea, but I probably wont use it myself, as I lie to listen to my own music on media player when I write, or read others work.
But of course, the right musical ambience to the right poem would just enhance the mood of the piece. I may not use it, but I am sure others would LOVE to add music to their writes. -
Folksongs Etc.
Kevin-
This shouldn't be a problem with traditional folksongs and other songs that are no longer under copyright protection. Anything else, I would expect would require an explicit release from the composer or copyright holder.
This is a great idea to explore, in your spare time.

the WORST of many bad ideas
I will put an immediate BLOCK on each and every person whose poetry comes with music~~~sheesh
But at least it makes the site more like MySpace!!! I think this is absolutely horrible! I hope to hell that there is a one button DISABLE feature for music on the sight that can be enabled~~~for the love of Mike why would someone want to pad their poetry with someone elses art? Unless their art is pure crap and cant stand on its own~~~ah now I get it!!! -
background music
hi Kevin I feel this feature will keep alot of us poets more interested and I have often thought how perfect it would be to have a musical background on certain poems, so all positive from me ,though I would be upset if this feature become free us paying members deserve extra rights honestly.
I feel this site should not be free to people after say a 3 month trial if no payment helping towards the running of this site then no fun...I know you are a very kind man kevin Love what you have done with the changes though still working alot of it out take-care hope you had a lovely christmas and all the best in 2007.
from Tracey Airs. -
its a nice thing, adding music, but i really did not sign up for that here, if i want music and the whole sound thing, i run a streaming audio from one of the music sites...adding music to my poems is, for me, not a priority. I know a bunch of poets who read at open mic. sessions and their poetry reading ability seems to suffer without music...music with words, read aloud is a whole different dynamic than music-poem-computer.
I admire your vision for this site and the risks you've taken - but its your risks to take, not ours; your site to risk, we just pay for the ride.
For me, the ride had been amazingly positive so far. ~ Richard -
hmm
i think the idea is good and your obviously putting alot of hard work and attention into this which os alwaus good to see
however may i ask? what is the point?
will this create a better site? maybe, but it could just create a more gimicky feel.
this could be one step closer to another myspace type site. -
Music and poetry
I dont like the idea of music with poetry if it is being judged in a contest. We all know that the music would be an influence on the judges, even more so if one can't choose the music.Music is fine it adds alot to a poem but can we not use it in contest, Majority rules, Just a thought, Chris -
GREAT
I had troubles dealing with this issue, as you see.
I get most of my muse from music, they usually aggrevate the mood, and is essential for my brain storm I must say.
I had a poem with my comments on it saying please download this music soundtrack from that site !!
Hopefuly your kind and sincere offer will come in handy.
However I will have to wait, for I am a free member for now.
And no, I don't think that the monotonus music will force any unwanted rejection, maybe due to the fact that we never really had the luxury to add music to poems before.
And I believe many people will appreciate it, even if it's an old version of techno, as long as it has a beat and a feeling stir effect, it'll do just fine.
Can't wait to hear some nice po-usic haha..
thnx and be well.
Raven Dark. -
Not that keen on music on other poetry sites, that I've been on, but at least there is the option to switch it off, thank goodness! It put me off concentrating on the verse to be honest.

Aw Kev
That sounds awesome. <3 I wish we could record our own music and upload it. That would be cool. o.o Any music is better than no music though, so people shouldn't complain! =] Thanks for the "customer care". ^_^ *God Bless, With Love, Jo* -

a long time ago, or at least back in 2000, i created fan music videos out of other people's anime and music for a contest at a national convention of 10k people. they were worried about copyright violation on both the anime and the music, and found a way that it was allowed legally, requiring no payment from the creators of the fan videos or the convention/contest holder, no loophole--an actual way.
unfortunately, i had ECT and it erased that part of my memory, seriously, or i could tell you how they did it.
i quit making the videos because USC film students started using ILM like equipment and knocking me out of finals. however, i bet the convention is still around. it was Anime Expo, run by SPJA.com the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation. I don't know if you can use the method they employed, because the mediums are different, and RIAA has become so tedious since then. it never hurts to ask.

neat! it'll be an added effect.. this would even help people be inspired by the music to write poems and to lyrics it would be a plus point..
i may not use it that often, but to those who are bg music fanatics, it'll work well!
thanks so much for your efforts kevin!
bless ya!

Like Amnesiac (sorry) Heaven said ... It would be good to get some peoples from the site to upload, like we get backgrounds and pictures from them as well. So yeah, I think that's a good idea. Even just get some music with guitar and /or base or whatnot, just to spice it up a little bit. Message me if want any other suggestions or want to know my opinions on anything else, I am a well spoken person indeed!
-
Honestly I am not interested in putting music on my poems, but the idea of paying alot of money for main-stream music is ludicrous, but public domain music doesn't sound so bad.... -shirley-
-
This looks like a nice option, Kevin, to have music or not to have it. It seems you've put a lot of effort into making this happen without having to go to any expense.
I personally would prefer not to have it except on perhaps a poem here and there, depending upon the poem. Poetry is an art unto itself and music can be a big influence on our minds as we read, so I can see where with certain poems it would be nice
For many poems, though, I feel that it's best to leave the reader more openminded to what they're reading and their interpretation to it. It'll be nice to have the option, though.
Thanks for all you do, Kevin

Hey. I think it's a really interesting idea and it could really add to the mood and atmosphere of a poem. And as for not being able to have the most reccent or favourite music I don't think it matters... also with it not being well known stuff it won't distract from the poems.
Anyway.. I think that it is a good idea and I can't wait for the test version and I hope it all works out.
Thanks Kevin! JESSx -
Aministrative Overhead
I think it's a good idea to have an audio link available if someone chooses to hear whatever audio the author has assigned to their piece. Here are some issues I foresee:
1. Copyright issues. How can you possibly be sure nobody uploads or links to copyrighted material?
2. Music is hard to index, as all you have to rely on is the assigned title or ID4 tags.
3. Format. Midi files do suck as a general rule, plus you can't embed PCM data such as voice. If you want to do that you have to choose a streaming data format, then you have to choose a format everyone can convert their audio file to.
4. Compatibility. You have to choose a format or embedded media player everyone can use.
5. Storage. Pics are limited to 80K. It's going to be hard to stash much audio data within that constraint.
6. Support. Some people are going to need lots of support and advice. Thus, more administrative overhead.
I think if you can resolve these issues, the copyright being the most important, it would work. By the way, I think Super Kevin is a great icon. -
-
You could cut the copyright issues and make people have to ok them through the modereators or something. That way, the content and origin can be looked at.
If you do that, then people can put up a song to their poems without being restricted to a data base. Finding a copyright song is as easy as finding a poem that's been copyrighted.
It's another option, but I think the database should be the first step..anything more and they can work at it afterword.

If the "poem" is a song we've recorded it would be nice for the reader to be able to hear it and maybe read the lyrics as it goes through or read them first and then have the option to listen.
although also haveing a database of musics of different styles and moods would be good for the non-musical who still want music behind their poem; although this should be a switchable thing (as you mention ; default to off)
personally if I'm on the computer I'm listening to music anyway so audio that starts automatically annoys me as it interupts what I'm already listening to but I do also sometimes like to listen to things off t'interweb so being able to turn the music on is ideal
JC -
Thats kewl. but i dont think that it should "eventually become free" I think it should be free from the start
-
I think it's a good idea- as you can just turn it off if you don't want it..
so yea, but there Must be an option to stop it whilst reading.. or I oppose it totally
if it's optional, hten great
-
so long as it includes the "Twilight Zone" background music, my theme song, I won't be too horribly hurt. Of course, until I get my Mozilla-Firefox thing sorted out, I probably won't be able to include background music...and once I do get my Mozilla-Firefox thing sorted out, I won't need this "Twilight Zone" background music either...

As it is though, I like the idea of background music for some poetry...But not music that's sung because I think hearing lyrics while reading a poem is too distracting. But nice piano background music--Some piano rock-n-roll music even would be a nice compliment to many poems.
Jo -
Very Interested
Kev,
I think the idea is one that could again enhance the site no end. The inclusion of certain music files that would benefit some of the writes would be a great bonus. Some titles may not require music, and the opportunity of 'switching off' may allow members who don't enjoy the poetic musical connection to read in silence. great idea, and once again, shows that you my friend are constantly trying to provide us with a site worth paying membership for. well done.
Mike H - Scotland. -
grand idea.
that's a grand idea!
-
grand idea.
that's a grand idea!

Go for it
I think this is a great idea... you might even be able to use it as a fundraising tool by charging up and coming artist to play their music on you site. And you would also be able to tell them how popular they are getting by the number of people who add the band's songs to their poem. Even if you do it for free... exposure for them is exposure...
I'm sure there are many people out there who'd love the platform...and you by rights would be getting free music?
Just and idea (if it works pay me LOL)
I personally would opt to be able to turn this feature on or off. Having steaming audio devours my band width! I'm not nessicarily interested in listening to music while i read poetry. it is too much of a distraction.
keep well
xXx

I think it's a neat idea... I probably won't use it... just because it's not my 'style'... but I am sure there are many who will...
You're working hard, so hard to please everyone... but there will always be some who complain... as for me... I still think this is the best poetry site on the web and I'm happy with it. I LOVE the new features that came with the upgrade!!!
Thank you Kevin...
~Melissa -
Well I think it's a great start Kevin I've always tried putting html codes for music on the site but it never worked, lol. I'd like to put my music on the site but at least I put a link to them on my page... you could test the techno thing and if enough people like the song keep it, but i don't know if everybody will want to keep it. You can try
!
-
So are you going to upgrade anything cool for free members to use or do we still have to shell out $$$ to be a cool poet?
-
YOU'RE ON A GOOD ROLE
i think thats really great kevin. i've tried to see if i cold get a music player to play on here was, lol
, but of course, it wouldnt. anyways, great job on the site kev. it keeps me coming back every day.

Kev
I personally think a streaming radio station that can be turned on and off is the go. You can set up a request line (email)and play in 8 hr loops. I personally use Sam Party DJ, to dj out and they have radio station capacities with lots of options commercially. overall would not cost alot.. Set up 8 hrs worth of music and repeat (for people not in your timeframe...)
Ive found spacial audio to be fantastic.
To be able to link our own written and composed music would be a big bonus too. A database like for our pictures, one we can personally access. To be able to display it to be heard would be great.
Overall I think this is a fantastic idea.

all style no substance
I hate muzak on poetry. It annoys me. I find most poetry to music is poetry that needs to cover up bad writing with with busy backgrounds, silly pictures that don't enhance the poem and some snappy music to get us to feel what we won't by reading alone.
If you want to work on something useful, get rid of the contest dragging and do something about making the times correct.

what I wonder is why we can't put up videos from youtube.com and such. I know right after the most recent change, we were able to, and now for some reason, it won't work anymore. for me it's a way to share some of my favorite music with others, not really anything as far as music accompanying poetry goes. I know on myspace you are able to do this, and you don't even have to pay for anything. I think I, as well as many others, would like to be able to do this.

as far as your main idea goes, I think the ability to add music to your poetry is a good idea, though I probably wouldn't use "generic" music, as I am very loyal to my favorite artists/bands.
-
I know some people here on AP who make their own music. Do you think we could upload other songs too as long as we are the authors? Just wondering. Then I thnk that if someone posts a song that isn't theirs it'd be like they posted a poem that's not theirs, and it would probably be detected. Anyway, that's a nice feature.
-
Could it be an option on settings? Many people might not like the idea of music while reading poetry, or have computers that would be able to handle it. It could possibly cause alot of computer glitches.
I know I prefer to read poetry, and not listen to background music which distracts from reading. I would like the option of turning it "off" like I do other aspects of the site.
Thank you. -
-
yep. i'm with ya.

Sounds of Silence
I won't ever use is so it doesn't matter to me.
If the stereo is on when I start to read poetry on here I always hit the pause button. Even if it's New Age instrumentals. I don't want any distractions at all.
Unless they are perhaps song lyrics, I want to read poetry in stillness, with the only sound being the words inside my head, or my own voice if I choose to read the piece out loud.
Cris -
I like the idea.. i dont think i would listen to Justin Timberlake anyways :\ i dont think it should matter about the song. plus some background noise is always welcomed i guess..
-
Ach!
I've previously expressed my distaste for music on poems. But to each his/her own. I can't help from thinking about the other places I've run into on the Web where poems and music clash so hideously. I get nervous thinking about running into that here.
However as long as I don't have to partake in such activity, matters not to me that I'll never run into Sexy Back while reading erotica.
Lisa
-
Interesting. I guess this way the reader of the poem could get a better feel and understanding of the a poem. (i.e. the poem is rockish and rebellous, the reader might think otherwise, but it is cleared up by the backround music) Good idea, I would've never thought about it! ^^
-
well i think its a gr8 idea!! creative .. but i dunno, i think poems are more to be taken/felt relatively to each person .. and puttin a background music would put u in the exact same mood as the author wants u to ..
then again im not sure.. it might be good .. we'll never knw if we never try it !!
thanks kevin
-
-
I don't really agree that the background music would put the reader in the same mood as the author. this is because the way we interpret the same thing varies widely with each individual.

also, he has said we would have the option to not hear music if we so choose.
-
-
um...
he didn't actually say we would have the option to not hear music if we so choose...
he did say it'd be off by default and that we'd have the option to have it always start..
and I wonder who the 'we' in that sentence refers to: the writer or the reader ?
.n.v. -
well yea, true
.. i guess we wouldnt knw unless we try !!
gr8 ideas mr. kevin!!!
-
-
-
sounds good ...
I can see that your mind is always in motion with ways to make All Poetry the best poetry site on the web. Thanks for listening to the users and for being the supporting reason for why we are all here!
joy
-
What about having the option to upload music we've done... that we own the copyright to? Or like if we record our voice and have that as an intro to our author's page or something?
-
-
Uploads of you speaking your poem will be another thing we're tackling, hopefully pretty soon as well
But I think letting people upload background music will just be inviting a headache of enforcement, etc. That said, they'll probably look fairly similar, and if there happened to be music in the background while you're reading your poem...
-
Midi files might help with the space..think of a card site. They have choices and mainly everything they do is midi files and those are the most popular ones...and you don't have to pay for them...
The voice thing is a cool idea but not all of us have a mic...
-
-
Midi files suck
The problem with midi is that they sound terrrrrible
Just to be official, a midi of a popular song still is illegal, as the song itself is copyrighted. Not that I'm particularly worried about them suing us for that though. My main argument against them is that they sound bad... -
-
Not necessarily true. I use a lot of MIDI files for public singing. They can be just as nice as professionally recorded music. You just need to be careful where you get them and who does them. I have even made a couple of nice MIDIs of my own. I personally find a lot of the current professional songs crappy. It depends upon your taste.
Are you talking about supplying the music, or allowing us to load our own? -
yeah true....
hmm I've been thinking about this all afternoon
-
-
-
-
sounds good to me.
