e e cummings 1894-1962

Happy Birthday e e cummings

e e cummings 1894 - 1962

Love him or hate him no one can deny that e e cummings was certainly not a ‘regular’ poet. oldpoetry.com/opoem/10906

His work is undeniably different from the mainstream poet, oldpoetry.com/opoem/12407 some examples of his poetry are difficult to understand by many but yet, 112 years since his birth he has his devotees around the world.

With kind permission Hulali oldpoetry.com/user/show/Hulali(from Allpoetry) has allowed us to use her essay oldpoetry.com/column/show/28: ‘The Anatomy of e e cummings’© for reference and also as a guide to perhaps understanding his poetry a little better that most of us do already. oldpoetry.com/opoem/11050

Edward Estlin Cummings was born on the 14th October 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. His Mother encouraged Edward to begin writing poetry from a very early age and to keep a journal.

His is also well known for his art and paintings and received encouragement to show his paintings in both Europe and United States.  oldpoetry.com/opoem/9769

It is said he was particulary pleased when for the first time '1/20 [One over twenty' book of poems was printed in the United Kingdom in 1936.]

He died on 3rd September 1962 of a Cerebral haemorrhage. Poems were published posthumously in 1963 and 1965.

Depends on who is writing what about the author as to the appropriate way to write his name. I have browsed the Internet for correctness, and it seems there are several takes...

    ee cummings
    e. e. cummings
    E. E. Cummings

    www.geocities.com/soho/8454/eec.htm

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._E._Cummings

    www.nascitur.com/cummings/cummings.html

Guess we would have to ask him his personal preference, and that's not possible. LOL

Anywho! Love his work. He is one of the poets that inspired me to write as a youngster for he seemed to break all the rules, and I was a rebel. LOL

Thanks for the column. It is informative and right on time!

Much Love & Many Blessings ♥

It's great that you give tribute to worthy poets, I know it is a labor of love, but I'd prefer better editing before these get posted. Glad someone else caught the name error, but it needs to be added that in the essay the word should be 'particularly'.

ee cummings is a pioneer of the "wordsmiths", a scientist of constructive literature, and his understanding of the "syntax" is far greater than most all here will ever understand. Brilliant.

Thank you so much for this! A few weeks ago my teacher had us sign up for a poet. All she had said about ee cummings was that he played with spacings and capitalizations and all of that, so I immediately felt interested. I ended up playing Rock Paper Scissors for him and won! This definitely is helping me with my research for this wonderful, inspiring poet. Thank you!

    Just as a note--

he wrote his name as ee cummings-- no space with the e's and no periods.

    otherwise, great tribute!

    wonderful tribute

Every poet has something to teach, and Cummings seems to bring
a new dimension to poetry as Picasso to cubism.
    Wonderful tribute ..

When I first started writing I read a lot of Frost, Blake, Dickinson, etc., all great poets in their own right, but I stumbled upon an e.e. cummings collection one day and my style has never been quite the same since. A great tribute to a great poem, thanks guys!

    God bless, Rose

I can deny that e.e. cummings was a regular poet, because I don't think he was a poet! He does win the crappiest poetry attempt award in my opinion though.

I would have called this a capital column but he sticks out in my mind as a poet who eschews the use of capials. LOL
A good tribute to a good writer (though not one of my favourites).
    Well done.
