Born on October 27th 1932 to German immigrant parents. oldpoetry.com/opoem/7041
Her Father died when Sylvia was just 8 years old, it was also the year that Plath wrote her first poem. oldpoetry.com/opoem/24378
The relationship with her Mother was not a happy one and she was quoted as saying that she hated her Mother.
oldpoetry.com/opoem/55444

She had a tumultuous marriage to Ted Hughes, oldpoetry.com/opoem/40227  who was not the perfect husband, he eventually deserted Sylvia and their 2 children for another woman, (who incidentally also committed suicide killing her daughter too). oldpoetry.com/opoem/13651   oldpoetry.com/opoem/40242

Plath has been considered a deeply honest writer, who on February 11, 1963 killed herself with cooking gas at the age of 30. oldpoetry.com/opoem/40254

Two years later ‘Ariel’, oldpoetry.com/opoem/7645 a collection of some of her last poems, was published; this was followed by ‘Crossing the Water’ and ‘Winter Trees’ in 1971, and, in 1981, ‘The Collected Poems’ appeared, edited by Ted Hughes. oldpoetry.com/opoem/40242

The Bell Jar is Sylvia Plath's only novel, which was originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963 then being released under her real name after her death.

Yet another amazing column and source for inspiration...I have admired Sylvia Plath's works for years...I once took a class on her poetry when I was 19...I became concerned, because I thought I was identifying too closely with her, knowing how she'd ultimately killed herself...I thought about dropping the class until a professor, a mutual Friend of mine & the professor who was actually teaching the class told me this: "The difference is, you take the light into the tunnel with you." This was in the late 1970's. God Bless Michael Heenan for saying those words to me; they've made all the difference in the world. Thank you for posting such consistently grand columns about some of our best & brightest poetic voices...it's vital that the new generation of artists understand where it all started in order to foresee where it's all going...Be well, Poets... Thanks for posting this. I love Sylvia Plath, what a gift she had, it's such a pity that she took her life when she was so young. A rare, true talent.

Sylvia Plath is an inspiration to a lot of people, especially me, even though she had gone through a life time of pain and hardship. This was amazing to read, thankyou.

Sylvia Plath is one of my favourite poets and one of the alltime greats. Her poetry has inspired many a poem by myself too. Her poetry and her life reminds me very much of the South African poet Ingrid Jonker. A pity that so few of Jonker's work has been translated to English (she wrote mostly in Afrikaans, my first language too). But knowing both their poetry I can truly say that there is that same melancholy. Ingrid Jonker also committed suicide at the age of 30 by walking into the ocean at Drieankerbaai, Cape Town. Thank you for highlighting Plath's poetry in this column.

Sylvia was considered a confessional poet like her friend anne sexton. She and Sexton were close friends until Sylvia died. I love this tribute to one of my favorite poets. Thank you for sharing this. I have a huge collection of her poetry including the book Bell Jar.

A wonderful tribute, she was a fantastic poet, woman, she was basicly a genius.
I'm studying her at school and I find her facinating, there's a brutal honesty about her poetry that draws you in.
She left this earth to soon, for I feel there was so much more to come from this woman, who is an icon for female poets.

Weird, I've just finished the Bell Jar and I didn't know when she was born She's a great poet and also a good novelist, which I didn't expect her to be (I find that most people tend to be good at one or the other)
    All the best

    Dear Von,
Thankyou for highlighting the life and work of this remarkable woman writer. Althouh I, personally, prefer rhymed and metered poetry, I have always admired the power of Sylvia Plath's thought and the beauty of her expression.
Coincidentally, 1932 was also my own birth year.

A quickie-biography of Plath, but one that will attract her readers nonetheless. The first poem which attracted me to read more of Plath was "Daddy," but also great resources you have provided.

Despite the hardships Sylvia went through, in her short life, she was and in my opinion, still is an amazing writer. I recently read a few of her poems posted on Oldpoetry and discovered many new favorites. This is a very well written and informational tribute.

one of the deepest, despairingly beautiful poets ever to have written. She was so amazing, it's great she is still remembered.
