The definition of beauty is the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. [m-w.com]
In life, many things are beautiful. People can be beautiful inside and/or out; physical attributes, aesthetics, attitudes, personalities, contributions or deeds to others, kindness, selflessness, hearts, love; all these can be beautiful, simply because they please the senses or mind of an individual.
Sometimes, beauty can be dangerous; so desirable and addictive. A love so potent, fully consuming the heart, body, soul and mind, gives way to the chance of heartbreak. Yet, love pleases the mind, heart, and senses, thus it is beautiful.
Beauty can be patterns, knowledge, art, sounds, poetry, or literature. The vast colors of the rainbow, the sounds of a rushing waterfalls or the subtle noises of nature. The pitter-patter of rain on a rooftop creates a pleasing melody.
The scattered rays of sunlight, the array of colors in a garden, the smell of freshly cut flowers, the brilliance of lighting bolts on a stormy night; all pleasing to the senses.
The brightness of stars on a clear, dark night with only the moon shining for light. To some, the graceful movements of an animal, or simply even the world of nature around us can leave the mind pleasantly numb. The amazing occurrences, the heady smell of nature, or the breath-taking view of a mountain can leave one awed.
All these things, and more, are beautiful, due to the potential to please a persons senses.
To me, beauty is... simply in the eye of the beholder.
Meh. Essay I had to write for my humanities class a while back..."What is Beauty to You?"...She finally gave my copy back to me, so I figured I'd post it on here, since I don't write anything aside from stuff for school...

Nicely done, Kat. I'm not entirely sure if I can even write anything anymore but this is brilliantly done. The ending line was and still is how most people feel.
Hope you got a decent grade. Deserving of one, this is.
Love,

I agree with pointlessone, beauty is everywhere.. and it seemed to me that is exactly what you were saying in the essay. " beauty is in the eye of the beholder", it is so true. Some people can appreciate the simple pleasures in life, like for example the smell of rain, and to one that could be beautiful. Some people think the city is beautiful, and others love the country roads and the hay fields...... You definatly know who you are and where you are coming from... this is a great write and it brightened my day! Well done!

This is true I think. But I also think that there is beauty everywhere. I think that everything that is negative could be made positive sometimes with a lot of work. You did a good job on this. What was your grade? I'm sorry I'm nosy. LOL
Great job on this. I think you seem to be pretty well grounded.

lovely. I like the depths at which you went to explain beauty, while ending with a simple sentiment. You write well

Lol, to me, my definition is the last line of the essay

I was using the word aesthetics in the way it's used today; meaing looks. How people look, how art looks, how horses look... In today's world, it is simply used to express looks, thus, looks which are pleasing to the mind are "beautiful", according to the marrium-webster dictionary. If you'll notice, I really didn't incorporate MY opinion in what beauty is, rather, I pointed out things which are commonly refered to as beautiful, and then put in my personal opinion at the end. This wasn't meant to be a philosophical paper, but rather a short essay to express what you believe beauty is.
When I get time, I may read some stuff. Got any suggestions?

I think you are confusing the concept 'beauty' as used in common language (and thus generalized) with the philosophical concept of AESTHETICS - which is the philosophy of beauty. Maybe it will be a good idea to read some aesthetic philosophy before you formulate your views upon beauty. the field of aesthetics includes ONLY art in its theories. You seem curious enough - educate yourself and read something concerning the theories of beauty (aesthetic philosophy).

Beautiful
You really did a great job of capturing beauty! I agree in a hear beat- beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! I find it so amaizing that God has created all this beauty as small gifts indivually for each of our minds and hearts. I'm so glad i got a chance to read this.
Gracias!
take care,

I would think, Beauty is in the memory of the beholder.

Well, you have more stressed on "where" one can find beauty, in this essay. When it comes to writing essay, we have to explain as many things as we can, thoroughly yet brief. The advantages, the drawbacks ( if it has any, from your point of you i.e. ... e.g. third paragraph in this essay ).
Beauty is in the eyes of beholder was the first thing that came in my mind while i was reading this essay. I completely agree, infact everyone should agree to it. You have nicely elaborated that statement and shown difference instances and places and people and beings where one can find beauty.
You have shown the definition of beauty from a specific source, but one thing you forgot is to define beauty in your own words.
nice write.. good work.. thanks for sharing my dear friend..
