Brittany Lilith posed the above question on Yahoo Q & A seven minutes ago.  My first response was that Oscar feels safe in his garbage can. It is his room or "womb"-like haven. However, I've assembled a rough draft of a paper I'm working on, based on Answers given by Yahoo users to the Question.
The habits and likings of Oscar are well known to the fans of Sesame Street, so it is no wonder that some people have linked Oscar's fondness for filth and trash to his hermit-like life. Drakule@yahoo.com surmises that Oscar chooses to stay in his can "because its dirty in there and he likes it, he dont like it clean."
Some have hypothesized that Oscar has something to hide.  Oscar might have big ugly feet, or a fear that people might laugh at his sex, or lack of it. Kimberly B surmises that "Oscar is a Junkie. He lives in a nasty trash can, is always surly and rude." Says she, with a smirk, "sounds like a burned out crackhead to me."

Still others have considered that maybe Oscar is "differently enabled," as was the expression in the old days, "crippled." Lilly Lyn and Cornerstone F reminded us that Oscar is a puppet. Proposes cornerstone f., "Oscar doesn't have any legs....just a hole in his bottom for the pupeteer's hand to operate his mouth...... "
Oscar's identity is all tied up with his can, like a hermit crab. Consider the secret life of Oscar, as his can rusts and wears thin, as he grows too big for it, or too fat for it, and scuttles shamefully and secretively out, furtively dashing into the next can of choice, maybe a dumpster this time. Oh, oh, Oscar, moving UP in the world!answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=20060809014158AAKw0xY&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMhDFUUSxetQpD_nC_93vobEtid5IXrTvlPs8wlJ5.wi2i1Iz.1OCaAOREUlhr24.chQ--#QcAtDju0UTDiw_f8H0b1eQCIzrTSEzrsEgEf7K.aSf2vgF8SZGFC

How do I get to Sesame Street?

But of course! Oscar is a puppet! Good point. I must work that in somewhere. Thanks for your kind words.

I've seen many of the same questions on Yahoo since I have my homepage set for Yahoo to be able to get news, weather, sports, all at one shot. Somehow I missed this question, but since I'm one of the adults that grew up in the Sesame Street era before things began to change so radically, I often thought of Oscar and his can. This is a very interesting column that has brought that old question back to the surface once again.

Yes, like nike, just above me, Oscar is just a puppet...but he could also be likened to many of us; grouchy, easily offended, yet hiding away inside our hard make-shift "shells" that we put up to protect us from the next intruder, only to attack again when disturbed by some perceived unwelcomed(or more likely unwanted)intrusion.

I like your take on things and will be reading more of your work. Thanks for sharing your views, it was a pleasure.

    Peace to you and yours,

    Lily Lynn
