I heard the noises, the distant echoes of bombshells blowing up all over the place...the news on TV are still the same, they have been for the past 5 days now...this road has been cut off, this bridge torn to pieces, that village burned to the ground and all the villagers homeless, not to forget the ones who couldn't escape and died in the inferno...
the freaky thing about all this is that my country's at war for all the wrong reasons and because of some 20 year old vendetta between an extremist militia and a foreign army who wants to take our land and I'm getting used to it !
I'm getting used to the fact that every morning I'm waking up to hear more bad news, every morning there are more people dying, more civilians caught in crossfire, somebody's mom or dad or child is dying every single day and somehow it's starting to turn into that old humming sound an engine does and you eventually get so used to it's presence that you stop hearing it after a while!
Now let's take a look back to recent history. About a year ago Lebanon emerged from a long phase of servitude under the ruthless grip of a foreign army that was, in the past, supposed to protect us and stop the civil war that raged for almost 20 years...
We were so excited about the Syrian troops leaving our land, we were thrilled to be allowed to rule in our own country and everywhere you looked, you could see the eyes of the Lebanese men and women sparkle with the promise of a newfound freedom...but that dream didn’t last long...13 July 2006...all the aspirations went to dust...it was 1975 all over again...the beginning of a war which, at first, was just another retaliation operation we usually encounter in the middle east and that cease briefly after starting...
well this open carnage has not ceased, it has crippled our country and laid waste to many lives and many futures...
Lebanon's economy relies mostly on tourism, the 3 to 4 months of summer we have are usually packed with tourists who come from all over the world to enjoy the great weather, the monuments, the beaches, the mountains...but this year they had to run for their lives because of two armed giants who decided to settle their scores at the expense of innocents...
Which makes me wonder...how does war usually stop? When one of the rampaging parties surrenders right? Ok...and what if none of the rampaging parties is willing to surrender and both are ready for months and months of fighting and inflicting excruciating pain to bystanders? Then what? How does it stop? Some will propose that a big powerful western nation interferes and pressures the enemies into finding some kind of middle ground on which they could negotiate...ok...so what if I tell you that this is a fanatic war? What if I suggest that this is a crusade in which each side is aiming to totally and utterly wipe out the other and take over everything that hasn't been destroyed? What if I assure you that in a fanatic war there are no compromises or negotiations or middle grounds? And that its sole purpose is death?!
Think about all that...
and if you are to pick sides don’t give me that Israel or Hezbollah crap...we all know that every group, militia, nation or army has beliefs that are unshakable...so I'm going to plead to the human side which is a good one to back up...humans, all humans, in every single spot of this world, in the middle east especially, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, I donno you choose...just think about the human beings who are dying every passing day of this armed conflict...think about the women and children that are falling under the blind hammer of violence...and maybe then we could all shout with one voice :
MAKE LOVE NOT WAR !!
the sacred is not for sale...LEBANON FOREVER

no one thinks anymore... they all just want their own interest...not the children's,not the country's , nor the people's ..no one's interest but theirs...
this is never gona end until one of these two mindless, wrongfully named human beings, will be totally abolished...
too much sadness and grief for my so little so tiny so helpless country...too much
great work serge...brought tears to my eyes...

Serge...you do ask all the right questions...and give out the right answers...
To see this country going down the drain...to see people killed in rows like sheep...to see this land destroyed, raped and abused, to wake up to the sounds of bombs, to live in terror afraid of what tomorrow will bring us...is just such a shame...
I haven't cried for so long...but for a week now...I cry everyday...to see these people losing their lives and the whole world stands by just watching not wanting to condemn the violence...to see them knowing that this is only part of a grand scheme that has been carefuly plotted long ago by israel and US ...and abuse the power given to the US by Vito and just nod their heads at them not willing to take step, not willing to scream out loud and say what you are doing is wrong...makes me sick.
It is a sickening truth...US and Israel want the middle east to be wiped out so they can profit of our generous lands...
We were blessed and cursed to have a country that is a Gem in many ways... We have been always envied for the country we have.If anyone has noticed Lebanon has been forever a war zone and a place for conflicts. But we are and have always been strong people unyielding to terror and injustice, we have always fought, never gave in...and today we are not going to cave in to the israeli violence...the cost for freedom, for existance is so high...I know...
Lives are lost, economy is lost, beauty is lost...but we still have each other...as long as we remain our people with one country we will overcome this...
Violence is not the answer...but with an ennemy like this...
nothing can provide the answer...
So be patient and pray...and hope for a better day...
Keep faith in yourself and in your country.
It is not the leaders that will save this country it is the people that will...
Serge this is amazing...
Keep up the good work.

I completely agree - make love, not war! My best friend (who is Lebanese) went to Lebanon last month to visit family, and now she's caught right in the middle of it. I'm so worried about her and I wish greedy idiots around the world would finally realize that war accomplishes nothing. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. And what good is that?
Thank you for writing this piece. -
*reads this and breaks down*
i never been scared my whole life.. and now im terrified! for the 1st time in my life Im afraid to die..too scared to watch anyone dies..to lose anyone i knw!So afraid that tomorrow will never come.. as i read this i hear the echoes of the planes as well, not sure where&when they're gonna bomb !!
i feel so weak..so hopeless..For how long will we have to wait?!i dont care what israel, hizbollah, the UN or the US hv to say over this.. i dont care whos wrong or right or what are the consequences for any of the dudes who hv to give up..I just want this thing to be done soon..and real soon
Im not sure if thats true or its only me who over panic!I can be rather rational &take things into logic, but I just cant control my fears

Do you ever get the feeling that when it comes to most conflicts in the middle east that there aren't really wars? Like, each war is more like a battle of some bigger war and that's why even after they end it's never a feeling of well, that's been resolved, but more of, well for now it's safe. It's just something I've noticed. People keep asking me who I'm siding with in this conflict, israel or hizbillah, and when I say lebanon they're like, so you support hizbillah? you like it when israelis get killed? and it's like, no, I support lebanon, not hizbillah, not the israeli government, like most lebanese I don;t want this war. Like any person I don't want to see innocent civilians die. I don;t want another generation that has learned to dislike a group of people because they associate that group with the bomb that killed someone they're close to. People just don't get it. Over and over again I hear people saying we're behind israel's actions one hundred percent, lebanon took their soldiers they have a right to defend themselves and disarm hizbillah. I find myself having to say the same thing over and over again. Lebanon didn;t take the soldiers, hizbillah did. even if lebanon took the soldiers, would it still be able to justify the deaths of so many people? Besides, if they were going after hizbillah, which I don't believe they're doing anymore, why bomb the north? And why aren't they bombing Iran or Syria? They're the ones funding hizbillah and I'm pretty sure the soldiers that they're using as an excuse to wage this illegal war are over in one of those countries anyways. This whole thing is just so messed up. Lebanon's becoming a scapegoat because it's smaller. Olmert is trying to prove he can fill Sharon's shoes and leaving a wake of lebanese bodies in the process. No one can honestly believe this is just to recover two soldiers. More than two soldiers have died for those two soldiers. Israel's losing it's civilians because of these two soldiers. This war needs to stop and I can't believe the US would stand in the way of that as it did. Especially since we have 25,000 people in lebanon. You'd think we'd be concerned for their safety more, no? Great write, sorry for my mini essay.

I don't really know much about this war. Israel uses any excuse for aggression. The Bush administration usually supports Israel. People suffer for the greed of the elite; greed for wealth and power. Religion only confuses it.

I'm deffinatly praying for you and all the other innocent people over there. This world is an unfair place and all the wars need to stop, all of the world. But that I'm sorry to say seems like a dream. I have to say I was really surprised at you saying you were used to hearing all the bombs go off. I don't know if I could ever get used to that. Anyways thank you for sharing this.

Such a heartfelt poem dear friend, We do need love and peace in this earth..Enough is enough..I do agree with you in all the points you cited above..we are all humans, we all came from Adam and Eve.. we all should stand against killing innocent lives for no reason..I am sure Allah is ashamed of what is going on in this earth..great job..keep up with the good work..

"the poets of the world would arm their bows with flowers..."
i hear you my friend !
let's just hope the flowers will make a difference and the words will influence the decision-makers.
thanks a lot for your comment
peace -
You are such a poet and the poets of the world would arm their bows with flowers...that is me.., Give me words to move nations...the only problem is that they will not listen...I am afraid there is a plot for the west to control the whole of the middle east and that there is a plan to take over all the countries one at a time whenever there is a flimsey excuse to do so...like this kidnapping of two soldiers...I hope I am wrong...but I do not trust government..as we in the USA have been lied to more and more...I am with you MAKE LOVE NOT WAR...
