Lebanon

it's been 3 days and 3 nights now...bombings all over the country...air raids targeting roads and bridges and houses and hospitals...civilians dying by hundreds...
and it's escalating, minutes ago the leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon openly waged war on Israel which means more destruction now, more children slaughtered on both sides, more houses burned to the ground, more families who'll wake up without a home...
I'm Lebanese and I've been a witness for almost two decades of violence in the area, which makes you wonder how much more can a small country like mine handle?
when will the fighting end ?
there are so many political issues in the middle east and it seems that we always turn out to be the scape goat or some crap of that sort
now I'm not wining or anything but the killing must stop ! this whole stupid unethical war between two armies, both believing they are in the right and none thinking about the outcome, about the ppl that are drowning in their own blood...
is this how civilised we have become ? is this the 3rd millennium ? are things going to be dealt with according to whom has the more fighter jets ? will the end of all this mean the beginning of post war suffering ?
i ask all these questions while doubting of tomorrow...I'm only sure that I'm utterly and totally against war,i have to hold on, this is my country,my land,my home...and it's being invaded by chaos both from the outside and within !
the wise-man said : who lives by the sword dies by the sword...but the wise-man never said anything about innocent bystanders getting blown to pieces along the way !the sacred is not for sale...LEBANON FOREVER

I read the newspapers everyday and I agree with many poets that war is absolutely sickening, especially when it appears that the world has drenched out of morals and any reason could be an excuse of attacks. In fact, it seems like tyranny invades Lebanon as Isareli forces continue to bomb and forfeits any possibilities to strive for peace. Stay safe and all the ebst, Lebanon has always been in my heart and it is even absurd for the USA to join forces with Israel in this matter.
    All the best!

I was born and raised in a small country as well, but reside in the USA now. I can not imagine how hard this must be for you, for yours and for all of your innocent citizens, the ones who want nothing more than Peace.I do not know what to tell you...I do not know what the answers are ( even they would seem so simple)Live and let live<-----four powerful words, but that is not the power being sought. Instead it is the power of more land, more missiles and other weapons that destroy. Unfortunately they call it "Defense" And the enlightened will see it as what it is "Offense" . I am so sorry....Lebanon has been in my heart and thoughts( especially the last few days) And I do wonder why the President of the USA sanctions murder by Israel , yet condemns Lebanon?Could it be that Israel brings a lot of revenue to the US???? I know it is
I wish you safety, I wish you Peace, and I will keep you in my best thoughts,
    reenie

Both parties unwilling to give out, to show their strength and the benefit of being in the right. Thank you for writing this, and making it public. Sigh the world is covered in fear, and fear leads to desperation, which leads to chaos. will it ever end? Or will we be the cause of our own demise?

Powerful piece. I'm sorry that your country is going through this (btw, where do you live? I hope you're in a 'foreign' ie non-native to birth country, otherwise you've got my sympathies)
War is ugly on all sides, I have friends on both 'sides' of this war although personally war benefits 1 party- the rich/powerful (in the case of communist wars, the powerful since they're so unwilling to be called rich).
Thanks for sending me this, sorry I didn't comment the first time I read it
Best wishes in this time of need

So sadness to hear that. I see in the news bloody kids and crying women.. blood everywhere. Sometimes I wonder if we all are human. I do agree with you and I’m against the war, too but not against defending. And defending is the thing your country, your people, Hezbollah is doing. I’m from Iran and both my people and my government expressing their protection from Lebanon and Palestine. I myself took part in some demonstrations and shout “Down with the Israel” and “Down with America” with my people. I can’t forget that night I heard from the TV that Lebanon is now free and Israel has retreated. I remember that night that Palestine be free as well someday soon but it didn’t. Maybe I’m not a good person that my prayers was not granted.. maybe for a good prayer heart must be pure and mine wasn’t.. maybe I shouldn’t pray?? No, I know I need to do. My country fighting for 8 years against those attacked us while we were prohibited and all so called powerful countries of the world were against us but we could won that war because we were all allies. Yeah union is the key and it’s the time for Lebanese people to be more united. Allah always helps His real servants. I hope to come so soon to your page and congratulate the freedom of Lebanon so soon (From war).
Thanks for sharing your real feeling with us :-) LEBANON FOREVER!!

A friend of mine made me read this write... ! Nice write, answering to your questions wont be proper, for static answers are not available from me at the moment !

Few years back, I faced a kind-of-similar situation, when internal riots took place between religions in my area, it was drastic, worst when i saw the dead bodies in front of me, like few feets away. Things doesnt seem to have cooled down yet, we have been facing them since like forever... what we need is not to ask questions... to stop this all, we need to answer to them.

nice write.. good work.. thanks for sharing my dear friend.. just keep it up.. your humble little friend... ... .. ... - vic ( who else? )

well sweetheart, that seems like it would be a hard palce to live. I read the headlines everyday of the fighting over there and it completely sickens me,the hell and anguish that the innocent must suffer. Even here in thestates, people are played like little pawn peices for bush to throw where he may so he may play his game of war and killl off good people.

People in power piss me off because in all reality, they only think of themselves and not the welfare of thier own people, or the next generation. This is very well written, and I am glad to see your faith and love for your country, and I hope, for your sake, as well as everyone else's, that this piddly crap of war will end, one day.

    Blessed be,

    Angel

You wrote the words I've been dying to write. Why are wars fought?
Why is there so much slaughter, so much bloodshed? Has humanity, kindness and the spirit of nobility been wiped out?

I agree and understand. its unfair that the people who are dying aren't even involved in the conflict. The international community has done nothing to stop it but I can't say I don't blame them. The United States is the superpower in the world. And with our track record of bombing without international approval sets the presidence for Israel too. It is terrible that it is going on and I hope that it stops very soon. I hate to continue to see people die over something they don't even have a part in. Thanks for reading what I wrote I know it was long but I love to talk about things like this. Have a good day.

my dear sidra bade, thank you for that wonderfull intervention and the least i can do is to agree with every single word you said...
we need to know more about our past in order to provide a better future and as you said, parents who are afraid of the "politically uncorrect" history are just doing humanity a huge wrong...
now to return to the events going on in my country i would like to point out that we, the lebanese people, are caught in a crossfire between the israelian army that is set out to prove its power and dominance in a troubled middle east and the bezbolla who is on a "holy" missions to save the land...
it's quite obvious now that the dying aren't involved in this geopolitical equation and that the whole world is watching us die and does nothing to stop it...
hopefully things will change soon i thank you again for your comment and support
    be well my friend

In response, Hizbullah is firing rockets back into northern Israel. Israel's weaponry includes all the 'finest' killing machines maufactured by the good ole' USA. The U.S. State Department issued a statement saying that they are unable to do an airlift of the 20,000 Americans stuck in Lebanon at the moment, because they would be using the same type / make of helicopters currently being used by the Israeli military to lob bombs into Lebanon. And so Hizbullah might mistake them for Israeli military and fire on them.

Bush has explicitly backed Israel's actions.

Uh, Autumn? You can rest easy, and you needn't be ashamed of anything. American bombs aren't falling on Lebanon. Israeli and Hezzbollah bombs are. We aren't doing anything. Don't worry. We're steering clear of this fight.

I agree the fighting must stop but unfortunately think of this quote "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it" - George Santayana. I saw that quote as I walked into the Extermination room in Aushwitz in Poland. It is one of the most true statements in the entire world. The horrible thing is that we truly learn nothing from history because in every society we are not taught history. In the United States we are taught G rated versions of history because the "elders" feel that we as a young childern or young adults cant handle the truth. History has no rating. History is brutal. History is hatred. History is death. But history is what allows use to not repeat the same hatred, death, and violence. However, we never learn the entire truth. We don't learn about the religious conflicts in the Middle East because they don't want to cause controversy in our schools because parents want to protect their kids from the pains of our world. But parents can't protect their children because in protecting them they are preventing them from stopping war from stopping violence from stopping the death of millions of innocent people. People in the United States understand only what our media tells us about the Middle East. About the "terrorist" and about the "evils that they do" they never tell us about how Israel refuses to compromise. Or that Palestine agreed to the terms of the David Accords but Israel didnt. This isn't about which side is right or wrong it is about understanding the cultural divide and trying to understand and work with each other. History tells us that people fight because of their fear of things we do not understand or things that are different. Do we really think that politics is any different than the primitive battles between tribes at the beginning of man? I don't think they are. There are a bunch of men in charge that are craving power and desiring to be correct. I can admitt that I have a hard time admitting when I am wrong. Politics are fueled and run by people of course the same human characteristics go along with politics. The Middle East feels under attack. And I can't say I don't blame them. Afghanistan. Iraq. Next possible Iran. I wouldn't be surprised if Lebanon just happens to be in the middle. They have the largest concentration of Palestinian refugees of course there is fear that the United States along with all the other "anti-Muslim" countries will side with Israel. If they don't attack now, Israel and all the other countries will whip out the Muslim world. We shouldn't as citizens of the United States support war in the Middle East it fuels the fire for terrorism. It gives them the fuel they need to hate and create hatred. We shouldn't stand by while millions of people are killed with no reason. Because of religion? Because two sides can't agree? Are we really going to repeat the crusades? Where people die over religion? I hate to see that after all these years to understand our mistakes we continue to allow them to accure.

Oh sorry I went on a rant. You inspired me. I am slightly obsessed with the Middle East conflict as well as the Muslim religion. I plan on getting a PHD in Islamic Culture and Law because it fasinates me. It pains me to see Lebanon being attacked. It is completely out of international law and I hope that the United Nations as well as the ICC and ICJ will later on be able to prosecute Israel for their attacks because they was uncalled for. But unfortunately I feel that the United States set a presidence of not having to abide by international law and not fearing prosecution for crimes against humanity or war crimes. Thanks for writing this.

I just dont' get the whole thing, what are they ultimately trying to prove, there will be no winners, and the loss of life is already tragic, maybe women need to rise up and take power from the men, and their war toys, I don't know, but that would be more bloodshed, I am rambling, but this gave me food for thought, blessing to you all in Lebanon, and everyone>
