Contents of the Foremost Trail by Cicely Fox Smith
Published by Sampson Low, Marston & Co., London, UK, (c) 1899,

One of Miss Fox Smith's earliest publications it lacks the polish of much of her later works.

There is a strong theme of patriotic fervour running through many of the poems included here and the key to this would seem to lie in 2 (probably connected) causes.
In 1897, when Miss Fox Smith would have been 15 or 16 Britain was celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It is assumed (by this writer) that Miss Fox Smith would have gone to London to see some of the festivities and whilst there to have visited the Museum of the Royal United Service Institution (see the poem of that name). The exhibits, taken with the general atmosphere in the capital, cannot fail to have affected a young girl from the provinces. The outpouring of verse that followed seem to confirm the hypothesis.

The poem on the charge of the 21st Lancers is interesting because Winston Churchill was in it. Owing to a dislocated shoulder he had a pistol instead of a sword which was probably why he survived.
