Engineering Poetry - Part I

Mathematics and Poetry are the utterance of the same power of imagination, only that in the one case it is addressed to the head, in the other, to the heart. ~~ Thomas Hill

Poetry is an art of engineering. Every word you think counts. Well, there are so many aspects in this fabulous engineering. To start with we shall see the importance of Legibility.

Legibility Engineering

Anything which is friendly to the human eye, is Legible.

So, what makes something friendly to our sensitive eyes ?

APPEARANCE

Yes, Appearance is the most important aspect. Better the appearance, greater the intimacy in friendship

So, what all counts under this appearance ?

COLOR

Be it for the background or font, color matters a lot. Color is like the face of a woman. Yes, it is the first thing you see. You would want it to be prominent, appealing to the eye. Say, you have a dark background and writing on it with a light colored font is common sense. The same is when you have the fonts in dark color for a light colored background.

Dark blue or dark violet text written on a black background gives an impression that you would have preferred your words hidden than let them be viewed by the readers. The same is the case when text is written in light yellow or cream on a white background. When blue is written on a dark pink background, it reveal the writer's intention to hurt the reader. Yes, it hurts and it is obvious.

Look at the blocks with alphabets above. Aren't they legible ? Consider the blocks as individual pages with typical color. It wont hurt much and aren't they reader friendly ?

It is simple, think a minute and choose your font color for the appropriate background.

FONT

Luckily, not all of us are allowed to choose the font face. If allowed to, I won't be shocked to see some strange figures instead of words by use Wingdings font or something else. However, people do miss out the criteria of upper case and lower case. There is a strict protocol, as to begin the sentence with an upper case with a series of characters in lower case. Do avoid the mixture of both cases and when you rather prefer to mix and present a poem, it loses its seriousness and earns a clumsy name. Some are also seen writing the entire context with upper case, whatever be their intentions but it helps them no way, as it appears to strain the reader and he prefers not to read.

Fonts are like jewels you add to a woman. Be selective, choose what you feel might appeal the best.

Hope this in some way helps you to understand what is Legibility engineering. There are other aspects like curves and slants, bold and italics. They are decent enough not to spoil the presentation, however they may be used. Except, avoid a long underline as they may again seem irritating and fail to serve the purpose, if you had aimed at highlighting. Take care to leave enough space, let the reader breathe when and where required.

We shall discuss the other aspects of Engineering Poetry in the coming weeks. Have a lovely time until then.

Poetry is nearer to vital truth than history. ~~ Plato, Ion

    an inter (r)esting start ...

and so I'm off to lesson II ... as there's always room for improvement! As an income challenged (free) member it would be nice to know the 'codes' for placing poetry on a dark backgrounds so the poetry would be appealing to all. At the present I post on light or plain backgrounds because of not knowing the codes. joy

WOW! What a beautiful quote by Thomas Hill at the outset. This one makes me smile because my love for Mathematics and Poetry developed at nearly the same time While math is strict and accurate(defined), poetry can be either structured(using a form such as triolet, Lira, Pantoum, Rictameter, etc.) or formless(just a free verse, perchance)i.e., not strictly structured. Engineering Poetry is a beautiful term and I love to think of it as the marriage of two professions - engineering and poetry! I am thinking of someone right now while I saw this You have so beautifully touched upon several aspects of Legibility Engineering. I was delighted to see the coloured blocks with ALL POETRY written You know, it touched the child within me and I wrote it with felt pen on paper the same way. LOL. Thank you, it made me realise how much I love colour and put me in the mood for some painting I enjoyed the facts on font a lot because recently in a contest that I took part in, someone had submitted a poem using smileys as substitute for words and I couldn't understand anything. LOL. Can't wait for the discussion to continue I do agree with all that is mentioned in this column.

    Hugs,
    Charishma

    jewels accent the eyes brilliantly

    hey my mystery date

An interesting way to present the info on aestetics poem layout. Elements of style that so similar to webpages still apply to poems and too many people accidently the rules. If it hurts the eyes, I might not read it. Contrasting hues on the colour wheel make all the difference as you nicely pointed out.

Thinking of it like engineering makes sense. Foundation, blueprints, vital elements, flow, and contents all need to be thoroughly dealt with and thought through. Thanks. I can't wait to see what else you analytically take apart the structure of a poem.

    Cheers

    Phil

Informatinve and quite true as when I finish a poem , I sometimes wonder what background and hue would give it a stronger appeal , sometimes not always possible , but sometimes it adds to the drama ..

In the line, 'Color is like the face of a woman. Yes, it is the first thing you see.' I changed the word face to breasts. Maybe because I'm left handed, I watch the other way. Maybe I'm just dirty. I dunno. But the message stayed the same. Presentation. Yes. Presentation is important. No matter how you look at it.

I have not debased poetry here. I took it for granted that you people understand what is poetry all about. Please read my title more carefully, what I have mentioned here is just an aspect of poetry. And it does matter, because I have seen enough of poems written in dark blue on black backgrounds. Infact while reading new members poems, I got to read a series of such, which led me write this column.

This is just a general thought given to the usage of upper and lower case. I expect no agreement as it is left to the individual's judgement to make the best of it.

You have debased poetry to scrapbooking. Poetry is not about fonts, it is not about color, it is about message. Yes, psychologically, one can add mood to a piece by altering the color, but what poetry is, what makes it appealing, is what the words mean. I agree with your points on capitalization, and the lack of adherence can make poetry seem sloppy, but it is not a key point of poetry. I think you have seriously misrepresented the true nature of poetry in this column.

I disagree slightly on the upper and lower case point. I write some stuff in lowercase for a reason ("extinction" allpoetry.com/Poem/1540242 please read ) and some all uppercase at the beginning, and some mixed. However the mixed would be because you started a sentence, and are continuing it on the next line ("Mother Lost" allpoetry.com/Poem/1555311 ). Good points otherwise.

Great column. Color is an important aspect of getting the mood of the poem across. Can't wait for the next.

Thank goodness you have mentioned the color/background issues! I have seen so many pages of bright red background with screaming purple letters that I have a permanent headache. If I have to highlight the page to read it, I usually don't read it. This is especially true if the post has huge blank spaces in it. Pointless waste of my time and perfectly good space, IMHO. This is a great column. I'll try to be back for the others. Toni
