"Pity the nation whose statesman is a fox, whose philosopher is a juggler, and whose art is the art of patching and mimicking."

Too bad that not a lot of people have commented on this yet. It's something to think about. You should try featuring it.

well in a way you're right about the statesmen but not only are they killing and squeezing life out of the ppl they pretend everything's all right and the apperances are all that matters to remain in place...
about the philosopher i guess you're right 2 but you must not forget that a philosopher must question everything all the time and seek answers not work on ppl's minds to get what he wants...so here you go thanks a lot for you comment and i have a suggestion, maybe you could try to find some book by gebran i know his work has been transalated in 20 languages or smtg
anyways you take care and thanks again for the debates you bring up
i love your mind and all your points of view

I have heard of Gebran, and known him as one of Lebanon's best philosophers, but honestly I am not sure about his viewpoints then. Your piece really reminds me of Henry Vaughan's 'The World' though, where statesmen were machiaveillian beings who would kill masses and squeeze taxes out of everyone for their own status. However, I disagree with the philosopher part, perhaps they appear to patch and mimic, but they maybe the ones who understand and see through the world best.

sanaa ! i'm so glad you gave it a thought and a deep one i might add !
thanks a lot i wish more ppl were like you in this country ! -
Far be it for people like us to question or analyze the words of someone with the depth and knowledge of Gebran whom I consider the best that Lebanon produced.
I guess that if our statemen are foxes, then we'd be divided by their greed and hence unable to coexist in peace. That's kinda how it is nowadays. None of those so called leaders give a shit about us. All they want is power.
I'm not really sure about the philosopher. I guess it means that the wise men who are to set the moral codes are shifty. We would have no role models to follow or something.
The patching and mimicing part is pretty obvious I think. We should strive to fix our problems rather than just try to ignore them. And we should be proud of who we are and what we are and not go around trying to be something that we are not. -
well gebran is a male poet/writer/philosopher and he's lebanese...it's kinda normal you donno about him but i'd suggest you read a book of his called "the prophet" i'm pretty sure you'll like it...
thanks for your comment 2

Quote from someone else! (not that you don't know, just that no deliverence seemed to think otherwise...)
Interesting piece- I think that they (sorry I don't know the gender of Gebran) are trying to say pity the nation that is full of tricks
Thanks for your comment
