Do You Have Old Teeth?

Please don't fall victim to the latest beauty trend and ageism
Nothing happened today at all, so I thought I'd get up on my soap box tonight. Aren't you lucky?

I got out of bed this morning and decided to mainly veg. This consisted of staying in my pajamas all day and watching TV here and there. I got online and read, too, but today's rant deals mostly with the TV.

For months now, actually, probably years but I lost track, I have been watching the progression of certain commercials. Not just one specific product, but the many, many products on the market for the same thing. I have witnessed the change in reasons why you should buy their product, and today I realized it hit an all time low.

I am talking about commercials for the vast array of products to whiten your teeth. If you haven't been paying attention, whiter teeth is the latest thing everyone wants and those who don't have them feel like crap. I have actually witnessed groups of women moaning about the lack of whiteness to their teeth. And tooth whitening products are usually situated before the actual tooth paste in stores. So it is working.

Yes, it would be nice to have whiter teeth, but I'm not going to go to a dentist for the procedure, and apparently, neither is anyone else. So every toothpaste company in the world has a wide selection of tooth whiteners to choose from, going from paste to strips. You can get cups to bleach your teeth. And hell, if you really want it, you can paint your teeth white. Whole companies have sprung up just to whiten our teeth. And if you've ever seen the prices of the products, you know they're making a killing, too.

And not one person has mentioned the two wonderful ways of whitening your teeth, except your dentist, maybe. Those two miracle tips: stop smoking and stop drinking coffee. Both those habits are not only bad for you (coming from a smoker, see this?), but they turn your teeth several shades of yellow and brown. So stop those two habits, then visit your dentist while living a coffee and smoke free life, and your teeth will be a whole lot whiter in no time!

But I digress.

As I am flipping channels, I see a red haired woman asking me if she has ever owned a lava lamp, but she won't tell me if she has. I've owned a lava lamp... and a Kiss t-shirt. This does not mean a damn thing to anyone on Earth. However, according to this red haired hussy, her teeth can give away her age. Imagine that! People can tell how old you are by the whiteness of your teeth!

One thing to take note of, though. Babies... they don't have any teeth. Neither do many senior citizens. Have you ever mistaken one for the other? I didn't think so. So exactly how are your teeth giving away your age?

This, however, amazed me. You mean to tell me that all these years, people have been gauging my age according to my teeth? People have looked at my teeth and said, "Oh! She's in her 20s!" and not "Oh! What a nice smile!" or "Oh! She smokes!"

And I can honestly tell you... I have one friend who I have been friends with for about 12 years now. I love her to death. I can tell you what music she likes, what colors her hair has been over the past 12 years, the color of her eyes... but I cannot tell you how white her teeth are. Why? Because I never really looked. I can't tell you how white the teeth of any of my friends are. Because their teeth don't matter to me. Nice smile? Sure, I can tell you that. But whiteness of teeth? I dunno! The teeth are probably the last thing I notice on a person, unless they have something really funky going on in there like one big tooth in the front and no others.

So folks, please don't fall for this hype. No one really cares if your teeth are blindingly white or just human being white. No one is really looking as close as you think they are. And they surely aren't making you look old. I have never seen a person and thought they were young only to change my mind when they flashed their teeth. And I'm sure you haven't either. So don't fall for it. It's crap.

As an aside, why is it that we aren't allowed to grow old gracefully? Some of the most beautiful women I have ever seen in my life had snow white hair or salt and pepper hair and crows feet complimented by laugh lines. They're mature, they have life experience, and they don't take crap from no one. And I think it's gorgeous, honestly. I was thrilled when I spotted my first gray hair. And I still tend to pull gray hairs away from the hair coloring when I color my hair. I'm not dreading wrinkles or salt and pepper hair. Maybe it's my way of flipping off the planet, but ask any mother and she'll tell you her kids gave her every gray hair on her head. You earned those grays. You earned those laugh lines by smiling and having a good time. You earned those crows feet much the same way. Wrinkles on the forehead? You earned them from being thrilled for your kids, your spouse, or your friends. You earned them laughing at parties and by being amazed by sunsets. Sagging breasts? You earned them nourishing your children and by giving up the wonder bra for sensible comfort. Sagging backside? You earned it by sitting at a desk making a living to support your family, by sitting and talking to friends, by driving your kids to sporting events, etc. But we're told these are all bad. Just so you know, you can't look 20 forever, because you aren't going to be 20 forever. Your teeth may dull and your face my wrinkle, but you are changing every day, just the way it was meant to be. There's nothing to be ashamed of there. Hell, that's something to be proud of! You've survived! You've made it to a point where you get wrinkles! Be thrilled, because you're alive and well and can maybe afford to color your hair and/or get poison shot into your face, whether you choose to do so or not. But it would be nice to see more people choose not.

Last evening, Joe and I were flicking through the channels, and there was something about skin cancer, so Joe asked me to stop. I knew what it was. I had flicked past it before--Dr. 90210. I don't watch it. I don't prefer to see breasts before and after, and I prefer to grow old as I am. But Joe watched the part about the skin cancer, and we moved on.

I said that to say this. People are falling into this "beautiful people" craze that is just sweeping the nation, and it's sad that these people cannot accept themselves as they are. It took me many, many years to accept my looks and be happy with who I am.

As for the white teeth, I just see it as so sad that people can't be accepted for the fact that they have brushed their teeth, and their breath smells clean. No greater turn-off than bad breath, that I will adhere to. The soul of a person isn't in his teeth, it's in his heart.

Again, this should be an article in a magazine. You really should start sending your stuff out! Do I have to come back there!??!! Love and hugs, Patricia

Aaaaahhhhhhh you DID post it here! So here I go to say what I said over at LJ...

This was so good! I get upset when there's all these stick insects out there and I look so different to them. But what you said made me feel better. My boyfriend loves me for who I am. He even strokes my sticky-out belly! I do wish I could know just for a day what it's like to have pert boobies and a flat stomach, but if it never happens I can accept that. As for grey hairs, my mammy's been pulling them out of my head since I was 15. There's a few that are very noticable in my hair now. It's quite strange, cos I've always had a ginger streak down one side of my head. Now that there's a few grey hairs, I have a streak down each side! They're actually more silver than grey, so I'm happy with that. We girls are happy with ourselves, and can laugh at the sticks when things go drastically wrong for them!

    Too true

Sigh. I cannot agree enough. These tooth whitening commercials have gotten to me, too. Everyone in hollywood has teeth whiter than this very background, and I admit; everytime I step foot in my bathroom, now, I do look at my teeth. Life was so much simpler without all of these cosmetics, plastic surgery, pressure to look good, etc. What happened to liking a person for who they are? That's long gone with the '30s, and now you can only like a person if they look gorgeous. What a crock...

The world is in a very, very sad state of mind these days. We should be focussing our attention to much more important causes. World hunger, anyone? How about the pandemics of cancer and AIDs? Maybe these advertising companies should do something helpful with the buttload of money they are making off of these idiots and contribute to the study of these diseases and the search for a cure.

Alas, that is not the case. We are too obsessed with how we look, or don't look, to even care about anyone except ourselves. Woe is me? No. Woe is the world, today.

oncore oncore!!! hear hear!!! 3 cheers for your awesome rant!it started to give me a chuckle then i'm realizing the truthfulness to it. we live in a fast food, gotta have it now have it perfect world. no need for us to be ken n barbies. thats so fake. i admit i'm no barbie. i'm 41 a bit over weight and have a couple broken teeth. my body aint perfect in any way but i'm happy who i am. next thing ya know these ding dongs that push the teeth whitener, perfect body slimming creams etc they will have a "so called perfect 10 whos smile is so bright ya need sunglasses" standing on the corners with a clipboard asking,"whould ya like to take a survey?" then go on a lomg winded sales pitch about the tooth whitener stuff. i think i'll keep doing what i've always done. brush my teeth 3 times a day and floss regularly then see my dentist for my annual check ups. if i end up losing my teeth i hope i get the chance to flash that perfect teeth blinding barbie my toothless yet happy smile lol

I don't really have issues with cosmetic surgery, a lot of people are in that boat and don't always have a choice. And if you can afford it, find a really good doctor, and it makes you feel better, that's great. I just get more and more upset by the little things like whiter teeth and perfectly shaped eyebrows that they thrust on people day in and day out even though in the thick of it... no one notices. I work in sales, so I try to look good by using that little pen razor to shave my eyebrows, but I figure if you can't take me for who I am, than leave me be.

    Up close and Personal.

Fantastic and laughed and cried at every word.Have never judged a person by his "choppers" just like you rarely notice them.I do smoke occasionally and enjoy coffee but am not giving these up for the whiter gleaming look.Every tooth is in its place and see my Dentist regularly. Was watching a Reality Programme called Extreme Makeover and the rush for the White was astounding as those Beverly Hills Dentists wept with joy at the sight of joy on their patient's faces and then laughed all the way to the Bank.I t is all about the big money but Vanity that we are often fall as in the False with Da Vinci cappings.
Have a Tooth contest and award the biggest tube of teeth whitening to the Winner.Would make a change from the Gold look which my mother-in-law sports every time a molar hits the ground. You sound lots of fun and am adding you to my favourites. Please smile for the Camera.God,you never told me you aren't twenty one.Elizabeth.

    I'm not kidding..at all

I would like to hug you for what you have written. It's a voice of sanity echoing down the corridors of salons and cosmetic surgeon's offices. However, I confess to having spent thousands on cosmetic surgery, which prolonged my face and enabled me to work at a job where I have to look good to interface with the public daily. It's like...well...you can remodel your face or your kitchen. It costs about the same and you take your face with you everywhere. Nobody much sees my kitchen. As for my teeth, heck, if you have completely white teeth, you'd look fake. I love what you have written. It's so true! And you write it extremely well.

    damn straight

    Merry meet,
this is a standing ovation O This is all so true. It doesn't matter with whiter teeth. Mine have been stained from using tetracyclin (antibiotic) as a kid. They will never be white. As to the other, got 'em all.

What was misspelled? I did run a spellcheck on the piece before posting it, so it must have missed something.

    I Agree!

I agree completely, the way things are going, people are slowly going to change into all the same "Baribe & Ken" like figures with all of the products that they have out there. I swear, they have a "cure" for everything nowadays. I like your random rant. Makes me smile. I ought to try it sometime. Anyways, good job.
