Why Christians are not bigots
Are you biased because you have eyes? Biased because you are a living being with thoughts, because you can read these words, draw value and an opinion and a conclusion from them? Sure you are. To argue that we are capable of complete objectivity, all the time is to reduce humans to inhuman mechanical beings. We are subjective. We are capable of choice. Even now you are deciding what to make of my argument. Therefore, we each feel something, think something, are subjective, create our own opinions, and this is our bias. Therefore Christians are biased. Everyone is. To suggest someone is biased, however, is as ridiculous as claiming someone is breathing! I dare you to breathe now!
A bigot takes subjectivity a step further. A bigot's bias is based on power and the belief that as the bigot, they are better than another person/people type. This is why racism and religious hatred are rooted in bigotry.
Christianity is not rooted with bigotry for the following reasons:
1) Christians do not believe that they are better than anyone else. The myth that Christians are self-righteous is not true. A real Christian is well aware that they are imperfect and try their best to acknowledge all people, including Christians, as equals in sin, as sinners. If we do good works, this is not as penitence, but as a result of God working through us by grace. We believe we are saved by what God does and not what we do.
2) The matter of hell should not be confused as an accusation that you are going to hell for not believing in God. That is no judgement on a Christian's part against a non-believer, but a warning of the possibility based on a Christians' belief. You have the choice to believe as you wish, but if Christians are right, do you want to take that chance? In other words, any fear evoked by the threat of hell is done with the intent to shed new light upon a fearful possibility -- done out of love, not spite. If it is truly done for other purposes, then it's not for God's purpose.
3) There is love in God's Law, but it can be difficult to see if you aren't looking for it. Many make that mistake of analysing God's Law with bigotry, that is approaching the Law with the preconceived notion of Law being all about rules -- dos and don'ts from an angry God without compassion or fairness. Consider why God created the Law. Not just to create a system of punishments, as is so often focused on. The law provides guidance and encouragement -- shows us what to try for, how to try to do our best. While we sin a great deal, we are capable of doing a little good now and then. Law fosters our goodness. Law is also fair and just. Fairness and justice are found in love and goodness.
4) God is not a bigot. Rather, He gives us the right to chose how we want to act towards him. When you wreck dad's sports car (purposely) and dad gets angry at you, does that make dad a bigot? No, that's ridiculous. Instead, your father gets angry and he might cry and be sorry for your decision, may punish you, but only to teach you a lesson. God is the same way. It doesn't matter who you are, race, religion, etc. If you don't do things God's way, that's your choice. If you chose to misuse your body, God makes it aware to you that their are consequences, but He's a fair dad, and He still cares even though He knows that you need to figure things out your way.
If God is not a bigot, and He's against all forms of hatred, since hatred would be a sin, then He's not going to teach Christians to be bigots. Therefore, true Christians aspire to avoid bigotry.
5) The very suggestion that Christians are bigots is a very ironic statement. This statement is an example of bigotry. To infer that Christians are less worthy, less moral or hypocritical compared to the speaker, or other people is bigotry. Calling Christians bigots is a statement which places a religious/political attack against Christian people.
This "Christians are bigots" argument is clearly a bad choice of words. There is no foundation, or proof for such an argument. It is both a Christian's right and duty to expose this meaningless argument and assert the truth. If Christians are anything, it is often misunderstood. So please, don't mistake them for what they're not. Try reading some of the Bible. Maybe start with the book of John. Sit in on a couple church services. Talk to several Christians. Don't be be afraid. You would be surprised to find what piece of joy you can find. And if you truly do seek happiness in your life, then give God a chance. After being accused of being a bigot, along with several Christian friends, this is my response.
