Canadian Poets

The choices made are a mixture of random search and requests from AP members.

A Country of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. It is the second largest Country in the world after Russia. A country of ethnic diversity, 2 main languages (English and French) and popular for her Royal Canadian Mounted Police, also has a wealth of Poets to her credit, some of which are now showcased here for you to read and enjoy.

    nice idea

i had the pleasure of seeing jacqueline turner at a number of venues last year when she was the poet in residence at the queensland poetry festival...and her poem on canada was very moving ....just thought it would be nice to have her on your list as well...she did a lot of work here during in her stay and promoted canadian poets brilliantly...

I think my favourite Canadian poets are Gwendolyn MacEwen, Evelyn Lau, and Irving Layton. I've only recently gotten into Emily Pauline Johnson; she was brilliant, wasn't she?

You should check out Gwendolyn MacEwen, I don't know how much of her poetry is available online, but I have one of her books; I'd be more than happy to type one or two up.

As much as I would have liked to include Margaret Atwood I'm not able to. This Author I believe is still alive. Copyright restrictions will apply to her work which negates her from being an Oldpoetry poet. sorry!

Glad to see you have Service up. One of the most famous Canadian poems is In Flanders Field, by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. Even though most know him as more a performing artist than a poet, Leonerd Cohen has published a number of books of poetry. Oh, and me? I'm a Canadian poet.

Good work in presenting this page and good choices! Also, the layout and graphics are very nice. Service's Cremation of Sam McGee is a rollicking story with wonderful rhyme and meter, a favorite of mine since early childhood.
