Cheap and Easy Halloween Decoration Ideas

Halloween on a budget? Try my easy and cheap decorations! Some great projects for kids!
We all want our house to look at least moderatly scary for Halloween, but not all of us have the money to make special effects and use overly realistic decorations to create this effect. Here are a few things I have used over the years to make spooky decorations for my house (and how to make them) with items I already had or that were cheap and easy to buy. I can garantee to you, it's more fun to make the decorations like I do, it is less expensive (although a few dollars will be needed, it's not free), and it is equally as scary, if not more so. Enjoy!

These are all for the outdoors, so make sure all the stuff you have for them is weather proof (like, make sure it won't be destroyed if it rains).

These are all my own ideas. I have tried them all already.

The Flying Witch

Needs:

- A very cheap witch costume (a plastic mask, a black plastic gown with hood or high collar and long sleeves, and the black pointy hat)

- A pole of some sort (a broken broom handle, ect.)

- Old newspaper

- An old broom (a cheap decoartion broom is best, since they fit the scary witch broom stereotype)

- String

How to Build Her:

Tie one string at top of pole, and one at the bottom. Puncture very small holes in the gown, just big enough to slip the string through. Put pole inside gown and drape arms over front (make sure bottom arm hangs down and top arm drapes down). Pull strings through holes. Make sure the strings don't get caught up at all in this process, let them hang free. These are to hang her up.

Place mask inside hood or attach to high collar. Secure it with room to stuff it and make sure she faces out. Stuff with newspaper, making sure paper doesn't stick out of her eyes.

Stuff newspaper inside hat so it stands on end. Staple hat to hood or high collar and top or mask so it looks like it is on her head.

Secure broom so that she appears to be riding it. Tuck sleeve ends together, then staple hands on broom. Put top sleeve on top and bottom sleeve slightly under that.

Tie her up outside by the strings. If you tie her up so that nothing is in her way (nothing too close to her top, front, sides, or back), she will sway slightly in the breeze and appear to be flying. Tie the strings so she is secure, but has a little give to sway...not too much give or she may fall apart. She should be able to sway about 3 inches forward and back.

Boos

Needs:

- Old pieces of smooth white cloth

- White string

- Water safe black paint or black magic marker

- Cotton balls or loose stuffing

- Scissors

How to Make Them:

These are great crafts for the kids to make. "Boos" are little ghosts.

Cut cloth into even squares. Don't make them too big since Boos are little ghosts.

Put some loose stuffing or a few cotton balls in the very center of the cloth.

Pull the cloth up so the unstuffed parts hang down and the stuffed parts make a rounded top.

Use string to tie stuffing tightly in place. This is the Boo's head.

Use magic marker or paint to draw faces on the head. Make them as friendly or spooky as you wish.

Tie a piece of string from neck string to hang them up. Make sure the strings on all the Boos are different lengths so they are not all in one straight line. Make sure they, like the witch, have nothing blocking them so they can swing around. Do to the length of the strings, they may swing a lot in a decent breeze. Don't worry. If the neck string is tight enough, the stuffing won't come out. I made Boos that go outside every year when I was 4. I still have them and am now 25.

The Grim Reaper

Needs:

- A folding chair (metal, lawn chair, ect.)

- A black drape of some sort

- A cheap Grim Reaper mask

- Old newspaper

- A plastic costume ax or sceethe (optional)

How to Build Him:

Fold chair up and put black drape over it so the chair is totally covered.

Stuff mask with old newspaper and staple it to the black drape.

He's done. Now, he doesn't move at all. This is a floor decoration. You should lean the chair with the drape against something that will cover him from about 6 or 7 inches below the mask as he will be mis-shapen (don't worry about the back, kids won't get close enough to notice). This also holds him up. If you buy the plastic weapon, just place it next to him. If he is covered how I suggested, it will appear that he is holding it. Place him far enough away from doorways and openings where people will walk by to avoid him being knocked down.

Spiders

Needs:

- A small black ball or tennis ball

- Waterproof black paint

- Waterproof white paint or white out (or red paint)

- Pipe cleaners (8 per spider)

- String

- Crazy glue

How to Build Them:

If you use a ball that is not already black, like a tennis ball, paint it totally black and let dry.

Use white paint or white out (or red paint for evil spiders) to make small tiny eyes. Don't make them too big or it will look silly, but make them big enough to be seen.

Paint pipe cleaners black if they are not already black, and let dry.

Crazy glue pipe cleaners on sides of ball (four to a side, eight per spider). Use a strong glue so they don't fall off (crazy glue or hot glue gun), and make sure to center the eyes.

Tie string around ball, and paint the part of the string that is on the spider's body black so it blends in.

Either secure them to something, or tie them so they dangle and swing.

If you are going to let them swing, position them away from where people are going to go so they don't get hit by the spider. The ball hurts.

Tomb Stones

These can be made one of two ways, either with styrofoam for the 3D effect, or with cardboard that is secured against something. I am giving you the cardboard instructions since they are a lot easier to make and just as good. The 3D foam ones can be bought.

Needs:

- Poster board or cardboard

- Waterproof light gray paint

- Black magic marker

- Scissors

How to Build Them:

Cut cardboard or posterboard so they are flat on the bottom and curved on top with no sharp edges at the top.

Paint them with light gray paint and allow to dry (to make this easier, get gray posterboard, or just leave them white. If you use cardboard, they must be painted, as tomb stones are not usually brown)

Use the magic marker to draw small cracks on the stone and to write the tomb stone inscriptions. Make sure to use made up names, add year of birth and death, and message (ex: RIP, or be funny and add something like the name "John Yeast" and the message "No need to rise"

Secure these flat against something so they do not blow away. Put them close enough to the house so that rain does not destroy the paper. Don't over-do it on the tomb stones. 3 or 4 are enough.

Hand From the Grave

You should have dirt or grass (like a garden) to put this in for full effect.

Needs:

- Old, un-needed dark glove

- Shredded pieces of old newspaper

How to Build It:

Stuff glove with pieces of shredded paper so that glove stands erect and open. Make sure paper is in the fingers.

Put glove in dirt so that it stands up. Secure it with dirt or very small rocks on the sides so it doesn't fall over. Feel free to use both gloves and put them togther for a double reach effect, but make sure they are matching gloves and are for different hands. Put a flower or lollipop secured to the glove so it looks like it is holding it for humor purposes.

Crushed in Window

Needs:

- Old pants

- Old socks

- Staples

- Old newspaper

- Red paint (optional)

- A window

How to Build It:

Stuff socks with paper and staple them to the old pants at the bottom for feet (socks can be either tucked into pants or over the pants).

Stuff pants with paper and staple the waiste band together to keep paper from falling out.

Open window and place pants from the stapled wasite on the sill so the legs dangle outside.

Close window securely onto stapled waiste so the window holds everything in place. The pants and socks will appear to be a man crushed by the window at the waiste. For extra effect, put red paint splatters around the waiste and slightly lower so he appears dead.
