A Message To Those Who Click
This is a comment and a plea to those of you who click on a post in the Featured box:
Whenever you click on a post there, it uses the points of the person who placed the piece there. Now this may not (and seems not to) matter much to many of you, but put yourself in that poets place. It costs well earned points to put their work there, but they do it in the hopes of getting feedback on their work. And many writers use their points to feature another poets work which they feel is worth reading.
Usually about 75 to 100 or more points are used…only to find that, out of maybe 10 clicks, only one or two people have left comments, and sometimes not any at all.
Maybe you don’t like it, or maybe it’s not what you expected, it still is worth a comment/critique of some kind, even if just to say 'it's not my cup of tea'. The author hopes to evaluate and improve his or her work, usually, and really does appreciate the input, favorable or not.
Sometimes a poem is clicked on which is of a type that the individual doesn’t care to read, erotica, for example. But when you allow your pointer to hover over a poem title in the list, it will show what category it’s in. If it happens to be a type of poem which you don’t care to read, please DON'T click on it, don’t waste the points…..simple, huh?!
Another way to feature poems is in the Shameless box near the right side bottom of the screen, below the online list and chatbox. Here a poet can list their work for 20 points and it will remain there until it goes off the page due to other posts. You can post here and use any kind of pleading, begging, promises, etc, to entice a reader. But the same thing applies…… these authors are wanting feedback on their work. And they will just about always return the favor.
So please, if you're inclined to not leave a comment, please reconsider, folks. Think before you click. You just might be discovering a new favorite …and someone else might be discovering you.
This is an interactive site…this is just one of the ways we interact.

I've come across so many members who refer to featuring their work then don't get feedback, and feel they have spent their points for nothing....

Thank you for this. I totally agree with what was said here. I feel that if the author has taken the time to not only write their work but to reward others for commenting, he/she should get rewarded back. I find it totally annoying that some people just leave two worded comments and nothing more. This wouldn't bother me so much if this site wasn't so family oriented. But, Allpoetry IS family oriented. We're supposed to feel like we're one big family. When I see people just clicking on to featured poems and just leaving two worded comments, I think that they're only there for the points. Thanks for the insight.

Good advice
Recently I clicked on a piece which was a bit too 'blue' for my liking (I don't mind the sensual stuff but it was a bit more hard core than that).
So I just said 'not what I was expecting'. It means I've read the poem and thought about it, and if someone read one of my pieces and found it wasn't what they were expecting I wouldn't find that comment offensive. I think it's a shame when people click and don't comment- but sometimes this kind of message (in my case at least) goes against the featured box- if I'm ever in a rush I read something not in the featured box for instance just in case I can't comment. So, no click, no read and no comment

Thanks so much for posting this. All though I don't frequent this site very much any more, I completely, agree.
Write on!

This was a good post. I have to admit, that I am guilty of wasting points, and for that I apologize. I guess I have a tendency to jump into things and maybe I skipped a step, but I never realized that reading those items even used anyones points. Sorry everyone!
-
Yes, very true! I spend so many points to feature my poem/column/contest and I don't get a comment! I hate it, it's so annoying to have to spend so many points. If i click on a poem and I don't like it, I at least tell the author that it's not my taste but I'm sure someone else would love it. When I first joined and I didn't know much I would click on the featured poems and not leave comments but after I figured it out I would always leave a comment. This a great column to inform those who don't leave comments, bravo!
-
I think lots of people can relate to this and it's good that you thought of pointing these things out. It's an interesting column. And yes, I have noticed before that when columns are featured and you put your pointer on them it gives some random poetry categories... must be some way to fix it, I suppose. Well, if anyone points it out
-
ok, on some levels i tend to agree.... but there are times when there's nothing to say. at all...
-
DEE, I agree with you wholeheartedly on this topic. I have featured my poems many times and just got clicks..even went so far as to spend money to buy more for promotion..I want to learn even though some may not like what I write. I have held two contests for those that have very few trophy's or none at all..trying to be a fair and honest judge in all the readings. I always try to leave a comment, if only to say that I have used up all my applause for the day..Please keep us informed with articles like this. It helps those of us who really want to be a success at what we like to do. Blessings always!

Excellent
Sigh... and the points go so fast! If I click and find I can't comment, I usually look to see how much the poet spent to feature the poem, and send them that many points. I know they would probably rather have the comment, and I do comment 99 % of the time, but there are those rare times when I just can not find words
Thanks for posting this.

Excellent
This deserves applauding as you have stated what many just get angry about without having the courage to speak out. Since joining this site, it has been my practice to promote much of my work to help "newbies" gain points when they visit. Some would say I must be mad, but it is my way of repaying some of the kindnesses shown to me when I joined as a "newbie" and needing help. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that many leave no comment at all and I think this is where the problem lies, in as much as I often think that they might be out of their leagues regarding a "response". To be new is one thing...to show ignorance of the system is another. Many just slip in and out of poems to gain knowledge and run. Who am I to criticise?...it is indeed a "learning curve" in which we can either continue to promote or not. Bravo for your statement,as it shows the depth of feelings out there to this particular problem

This has, indeed, happened to me. I rarely post in the d\featured or shameless as a result. Sadly, I find myself not clicking on those very often as well. While many of the poets say they promise they will comment, it's often not a very substantial comment. If you're going to comment, comment. If you like it, don't just say "I like it" - tell me what you like. If you don't like it, please do the same.
-
I always comment on the poems I click upon. I have used about 500 points to post a poem in featured before, so I know how it is. I'm glad you made this post here. I hope it will teach some of our "point wasters " here to appreciate and actually make a critique or comment even if it is only one line.
-
well worth posting and reading. sometimes we just dont have alot to say about the poetry. i have benn on this site since april. i just love the freedom of getting open feedback. lets one know how well they are writing, and how others feel about the poetry awsome site i love it. i to when i first started was guilty of not commenting on all clicked, it may help it on the sign up page they put a note about clicking and commenting.let the reader know about the point system and maybe so many points wont get wasted .great job of getting point across to other poets and readers
-
Okay... which triolet was that, Ian?
Thanks for reading and commenting on this. I know it's a bit idealistic but what the hey... it does get a bit frustrating at times (not that I'm speaking frm first hand experience, of course.... ALL the clicks on my featured poems get comments.....yeah, sure they do ....NOT!!
Dee

Very true. I've been here a year and just started posting things in the feature box. I'll put in points for three to give clicks, only one out of all those who click will comment. I'm not doing it so much now. No use wasting my points if people won't comment. Anyway good write. I hope at least you receive more comments on your featured items. You deserve them.
Brian -
hehehe a lot more diplomatic than my triolet one i did a few days ago
spill ink and twist me into the shape of love...
-
thankx for this...
that's what we really needed... *feeling ashamed because of sometimes clicking without commenting*
I'll stop it because you are right... I'm sorry!
Anyone reading this and knowing I've also done this to him/her, I want you to know that I'm sorry. I'm not just saying that, but also meaning it!!!
LittleAnn -
yes! everything you've said needs to be said. I don't know why it is so hard for some to just either a. not click at all or b. click and comment!
I understand that some people are unaware of the way it works, but it's really annoying when you inform them and they just get mad and refuse to listen. ugh.
anyway, good article.
Lea -
very informative, thanx for the info
-
I just want to applaud you.
-
OH PLEASEEEE FEATURE THISSSS!!!
-
Anyone who has as many comments on their page as you do Dee ought to get the benefit of the doubt on slant here lol. Good information. I figure, when you're new here it's understandable to click without realizing the price of not commenting. Hopefully newbies read columns like this, as make some changes. Learning curver so to speak which you mentioned herein. Wonder if they know they can give the points back or at least some simply by applauding
Lady Dee you are always helpful it's a pleasure to read ya
-
Dee I think you have written a very infomative column here. I am sorry people have taken this the wrong way as knowing you, this is something you have not wished to cause.
Personally I think anything placed in the featured column should incur a point charge to the clicker if they do not leave a comment.
But I think that is the devious part of me coming out or Ive been whipped to much
This site is about getting feedback on your work and it isnt hard to write "Hmmmmm not my style" or "Nah didnt like it"
At least you would know if it was worth reading or not.
Or I'll be back to comment. If they are in a rush.
So I'll say nicely put girl.
Mia

Dee, believe me, you do make yourself clear enough. Those who don't understand, it's because they don't want to understand
. But well, we all know how careless can human beings be, right? I do hope, though, that some of the people who have read or will read this, do change their attitude. Not that I post much, or that I expect people reading my poems, neither. Actually you know very well I don't post here often, and I think that if I get a good critique from you, it's already OK
.
Either ways, I do remember the times when I used to come here often and I did spend many of my points to put my poems on the featured box, and no, I don't remember many poets giving a feedback. I usually had to spend a loooot of points to get enough comments.
It's good to see you say this, and obviously people read it. So maybe it will even have an effect at Allpoetry!
I'll leave you know, I have to study Act III of Shakespeare's Julius Ceasar!
Take care,
Maria -
Newbie Bookmarker
In my case, I am a Newbie. I was operating on the principles I use for review at Amazon.com, etc., I would read the piece and often bookmark it, so I could return when I was less pressed for time. I am a Full Time student, with two part-time jobs. However, I would consider copy-pasting the titles into notepad, to look-up later--yet, the time it would take would most-likely deter me from following-through. My idea was to bookmark and review at leisure so that I did not give a sloppy review.
I appreciate the information, because this site is so different from what I am accustomed to. -
I've been here 15 months and just now learned that if I hover above a feature it tells the category (even if that category isn't accurate, lol.) I almost never click on Featured items, so what do I know, lol.
In a perfect world all people would comment and all poems would be perfect. That's not going to happen anytime soon. I do assume that certain types of writing get commented on more than others. Maybe the author needs to take that into consideration before he features it.
Lets hope more people comment...not just on Features, but everything they click on.

Important information
My goodness I am learning something, but it seems with such an intensive debate going on, a comment of some sort would be easier. I just assumed that when I do not get replies back I have either written poorly or on a subject that offends. I think you can simply say some thing like good try but not something I know about or like. I also think we do not learn when ignored, yet I see ten clicks on a poem in a week and no comments. I do not know and would like to know if I go to some ones page to see if I have missed a poem or go to reread, does this hurt them? If so I want be made aware. I do not think any one here on this site is so great that they can not learn, even if it is to help teach. Thank you for teaching me and I hope to keep learning. Oh I just edited my comment for typo's is this a click and if so am I just hurting me?
Edited on Oct 02, 9:43 p.m. because 'typos'. -
I know it's not about you specifically. You and the several other writers who have posted columns or poems about this are all wanting people not to click without commenting. I understand that. What I'm saying is that it's not fair to call the actions of those who don't comment rude, "inconsiderate", or "insulting" when you took the gamble.
-
Mockery and false praise are not a part of the article. You've made some very valid points in your comments and I thank you for that, but for some reason we seem to be off on the wrong foot with each other. And no, you haven't offended me, not at all. I for one appreciate your contributation to the comments, and appreciate what you've said. I have learned over my 68 years to accept other peoples opinions, they're entitled to them and often very enlightening.
I'm not quite sure what you're refering to as to my 'barely veiled attempts at clever insults'..... no insults from me and none intended.
Again, thank you for your input
Dee
-
you haven't offended me, although it appears that i have offended you judging by your barely veiled attempts at clever insults. i understand perfectly what you're trying to say, and the thing its a good thing that a large majority of people don't feel the need to response all of the time, or else no one would be on this site due to lack of civility. you couldn't even handle one slightly negative comment, what makes you think you can handle more? this site is here is so that we can share, and possibly receive good comments and boost our egos, not mock the art that is poetry with false praise just because we don't want to make anyone feel bad. let it go.
-
This article is not about ME.... I rarely place my work in the featured box, though I've often had it placed there by other poets.... and I nearly always get good feedback ....and for me it's not a question of fault, mine or anyone else's.
Of course it's a gamble, getting lots of feedback.... it's a gamble placing our work here and getting ANY feed back at all, featured or not.
Maybe I'm not making myself clear here, although the majority of those reading this seem to grasp it.
Anyway.. thanks for reading...and commenting
It's much appreciated.
Dee
-
I very strongly disagree. It's a gamble that you chose to take. The fault rests with you.
Keep writing. -
I'm sorry if I've offended you in any way, mtgranola. But nowhere in my article did I mean to imply any disrespect to anyone who does not leave a comment on a featured poem.
This is simply a piece to help people understand the concept of featuring.
Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that about 20% of those clicks lead to comments, and I'm also aware that some of those who don't leave comments may not understand the concept.
I guess in the end, 'if the shoe fits....' is as applicable here as is your quote, 'if you can't say something nice......'
My main message here is ..it's an interactive site and we do indeed connect with some awesome people who we might not have if we didn't leave a comment. That's not to say it's carved in stone that we MUST leave one.
Sorry you missed my point but thank you for reading and commenting. It's much appreciated and actually brings out another point about featuring...the 20% aspect

thankyou for this, it can be frustrating even if too say its not my cup of tea! etc etc cheers for making the pont

you know, even if people post their poems in the feature box, it is already warned that only 20% of the people who click on it are going to respond at all. and half the time the poetry may not jive with what a person likes, so instead of leaving a potentially ego-damaging remark (we poets are such sensitive creatures) we choose not to comment at all. after all, 'if you can't say something nice, then don't say it at all' is something that is pounded into our heads since we are little. if you don't like you lack of responses then perhaps you shouldn't waste your points like you seem to feel you are doing. i don't mind when people click and don't respond. but then of course, i have the benefits of living through numerous art critiques as well...i can handle the fact that some people may not like my poetry. i'm truly sorry that you feel this way, but it's a fact and you have already been warned before you spend your points on a bid so i feel that you don't really have anything to complain about.
-
Amen, sister!
Thank you so much for saying what has crossed the minds of many of us! I know that I have featured my work several times, and regularly recieve 2 or 3 comments for every ten clicks, if that. It's hard enough to earn the points necessary to feature a piece, but to get nothing for your work? That's sad. I have read a few featured pieces that I didn't particularly enjoy, but I was still considerate enough to leave a comment of SOME kind. Thank you for saying this. We can only hope that it is heard.
~Robert

This is really true, and people should really comment on others work. I really like that you have brought this to others attention, and I admire this. Good job, and hopefully people will learn a thing or two
-
Excellent Points
Well, I heartily agree with you, Dee. Alas, some time ago I sent a similar message to everyone who had clicked but did not comment. I got reamed across the coals by Kevin, who said that's just typical and we can't make anyone not click or even comment if they do.
Still, I agree with you and I hope a number of people who do such things will read this article and seriously consider its merits. I've begun to notice that, sometimes, those who click but don't comment are those who have featured a work at less points than say the points we pay to feature.
Good luck in getting the point across, hon.
Love and hugs
