Prevention is Key

Usually the errors will disappear until you EDIT it again

Okay. So the problem is this: When EDITING an item that was ORIGINALLY written and pasted from MSWord, and often from WORDPAD, errors such as these show up in the item:

I hanker for a hunka cheese oh please cheese don’t you know? ‘aint that good enough for you cheeseeeee pleaseeee can’t not want?

In addition, you may find that apostrophes are replaced with question marks.

Upon FURTHER analysis (cause I just have to know, you know?) I have found that:

Mozilla browser's COMPOSER will do the same as Word. So it's useless here.

From Shadowspawn: The reason this happens is that MSWord uses embedded codes to do things like bold, italics, punctuation. I have also found a really neat tool called ieSpell that is inserted into your browser so that you can fill in fields and spell check them with out the need to copy and paste. Here is the link for it www.iespell.com/ unfortunately it’s only for IE (Internet Explorer). Thank you for your help; invaluable!

The only way to fix this is to take your writing from Word, paste it into NOTEPAD, SAVE it in Notepad, reopen it, THEN paste THAT into your new item to be created on All Poetry. OR, to completely bypass this problem, you can try using RICH Text Formatting available from Internet Explorer only (available for Gold memberships only). I was surprised to NOT find these errors while using IE with AP's RICH Text Formatting option.

What I was wondering was knowing the default font herein, at All Poetry, can you not then reformat the text IN Word, then paste it here. Probably. The options are ASCII, Unicode, etc. so if this is the case and Kevin tells me what font is used here for new items, then that's always an option to fix this problem on the USER end. He did let me know this is a known problem with Microsoft and its incompatibility with All Poetry in SOME instances. Not all. Not a problem if we know how to fix it before it becomes a problem which is why I am writing this. Poor newbies!

I happened to also try updating my MS Office 2003 with all current updates and unfortunately, it didn't make any difference.

Ah. I can rest easier knowing how to stop this from happening.

In the meantime, if you get these errors, go to the item and click on EDIT, then change nothing and hit SUBMIT. Usually the errors will disappear until you EDIT it again... saves the hassle of REWRITING all the stinkin errors. Lol. If you do it enough, it will go back to normal. Try it. I dare ya. Just EDIT and SUBMIT for a while. It's fun

Ain't techieland great? I'd never want to do what Kevin has to do on a daily basis. In the grand scheme of things, this is merely an annoyance; frustrating to be sure. However, PREVENTION IS KEY. So go. Prevent. Dang MS

I really was frustrated; not mad. Had to figure it out!

    Get a MAC!!!!!!!
sheesh... you think you have to deal with MS for the rest of your lives? HA HA HA
but seriously... I've avoided the errors and such by actually going over the poem, story, whatever... AFTER it's been pasted. I look for apostrophies especially... as they are the bigger culprits coming from Word... but then of course...
I'm anal... so this approach isn't for everyone...

    Informative

The reason this happens is that MSWord uses embedded codes to do things like bold and italics things like that. Punctuation is also handled this same way. So if you create your document in Word then save it as RTF which removes those embedded codes. This will still allow you to use Word's spell and grammar checker.Once you have saved this then open using Wordpad and do your copying and pasting from there. Notepad has a word limit built into it, hence the name notepad. You loose any bold, italics, and such but it is a good work around for electronic submissions. We run into this all the time at the University where I work. Students create their essays and such and need to upload them to our on line forms and they had run into the same errors. We had them use RTF and it works fine. I have also found a really neat tool called ieSpell that is inserted into your browser so that you can fill in fields and spell check them with out the need to copy and paste. Here is the link for it www.iespell.com/ Unfortunately its only for IE.I hope this helps to clear things up a little.

Lol. I am a different kind of techie though. I did this for a living I don't always have the brain cells needed but when I want an answer, this is usually the solution, seek and destroy as Yem says. Thanks for reading this not your normal story or poem ha.

Seek and Destroy huh? That's a great way of putting it Yemassee. I'm glad you got a kick out of me; humor is so underrated. I used to write this stuff everyday... in another life TY

Thanks Margaret! Word wrap? See I will have to investigate that Not used to notepad. It's find for poetry, but I write a lot of essays that aren't shown here on AP. And long winded posts on techical medical stuff so not having an automatic spell and grammar checker hits me hard. Well, good thing I don't post all that here right [chuckles] You're the best

This is cool. I admire your obsession! (Being one myself sometimes.) I had that problem a couple times but not anymore. I don't use word at home but maybe I was pasting from a word document I'd created. No idea. Anyway, I just use notepad anyway, I'm a lazy SOB.

Something tells me verdana is the font used for new text, not sure why I think that however, lol.

You know, this was more entertaining than 90% of the stuff on this site. People need to write more "seek and destroy" type works.

I like your attitude to frustration. Good going!
I use notepad for writing poetry. It doesn't have a spell check or thesaurus the way Word does, but these things are available online. The word wrap doesn't get in my way when I post because my lines are usually less than 14 syllables.
I've noticed that when I post a story there are extra line returns. Perhaps it would be an idea to turn off word wrap before saving the file and posting it here.
Good research, Adrienne, it gives us a take-off point.
