Australian Tapestry

Australia is a beautiful country, much loved and revered by its people, and has been for over 200 years.

Australia is a beautiful country, much loved and revered by her people, and has been for over 200 years. since Captain James Cook first landed on her shores in 1770 poets have searched their souls and found words to describe the diversity of this wonderful Country.

The Poetry listed here for your enjoyment is, hopefully a reflection of the love and pride that has always been evident, flora and fauna,  our way of life, our history, sense of humour and good - natured characters are all mentioned somewhere in the poems listed.

The Oldpoetry Team invite you to 'visit' Australia through the poetry here and hope you enjoy your holiday in the 'land down-under of a by-gone age.'

Brian I did an exhaustive check on that particular poem and found nothing to confirm that Lawson had written that particular version (the one containing the 'C' word).

changing the subject - it's lovely to see you back

aussie aussie aussie- Oy Oy Oy! Lovely collection, but I was disappointed that Henry Lawson's "Never Never Land" was missing. That is my only criticism, however. You've captured the heart and soul of the Australian people- and we appreciate it! Cheers, mate

    Creative

I read the history of and some writes by Barcroft Henry Boake and it was very interesting. I enjoyed seeing that through out ages feeling and words remains the same. The poem Memory could have very well been written today--it was beautiful.

ahhh, so much criticism. we aussies are renowned for our easy going natures and warmth. let's not worry about the little things and focus on the fact that we've got this much great poetry to share with the rest of the world, and that this is only a mere morsel. we've plenty more to offer, but this snapshot into our past is fantastic. thank you to the people behind this column and happy reading to everyone else.

'Find your Home - It was not and never has been my intention to discredit your or any other culture and I apologise for any offence that you may feel is directed at your ancestors. In fact I have tried to find on many occasions poetry by Aboriginals and so far have only sourced Oodgeroo Noonuccal, who is listed here with a link to her author page so that other works of hers may be read and appreciated. Judith Wright too was a well-known advocate for Aboriginal people, she too is listed above and once again her author page can be accessed from this list.

200 Years + is as far as I am able to go back for Australian poetry, written by white Australians. I appreciate the oral history of your people but we're dealing with Poetry on Oldpoetry, 200 years plus relates to the written words we have on that particular website with regard to Australia - so far. However if you can help us out with information regarding written poetry by your people I would not hesitate to include it here. Copyright issues are an important part of any inclusion on Oldpoetry so of course that must be taken into consideration. I look forward to receiving any information from you.

Once again I'm sorry if you have been offended in any way but please if you do have any information then please share it with us.

    Thank You
    Von

AS an Australian aboriginal i find it deeply offensive to discredit the 50,000 years of oral history that isn't included just cause some white fella declared our country terra nullus, discrediting our culture. How about a few more of the locals, and not so much of the white view of our culture. I've got nothing against what your doing here just statements like,
"Australia is a beautiful country, much loved and revered by her people, and has been for over 200 years." are very insensitive. Sorry to tread on toes.

Well people can by all means be honest, but there is no sense in being rude in doing so. I appreciate the effort and time you have put into the production of this list, and when I am up to reading and have a quite moment to think I shall return. Excellent work Von!

Kevin Dunn - I'd like to point out that this collection is from Oldpoetry and therefore features deceased poets of Australia. I am well aware of the modern poets, their talent and wit is not lost on me, but not only is their work under copyright laws they are perhaps still living and are not included on our Oldpoetry site.

I have however added 3 poems to the list from 3 of the poets you listed, we do not to date have Rowbotham listed on Oldpoetry

I like how you wrote this piece. It's really interesting. Yoiu should write for some kind of literature newsletter or for a news paper.

    great idea

I don't know if you all have put poets in collections such as this before, since i don't typically look at columns, but I really like the idea of having poets presented by nationality. I love aussie poets, they're as indicitive of their place in time and space as the romantics were of theirs, but a bit harder to find.
